Unfortunately, due to the fact that these units calibrate themselves to a room upon boot up and there is no way to bypass it (as confirmed by their engineers), there was no way for me to test it like I normally do. And it wasn’t for lack of trying. I discuss this in the video. However, I did provide some in-situ measurements along with binaural demos of steering the sound field.

Nice to see such interesting innovation in speaker design, going beyond "the box" and including microphones for self-calibration. I hope they go in the direction you suggested with EQ support, but also implement listener position microphone calibration with custom target curves, this could resolve the uneven tonality issues and allow personalization to taste.

This is an excellent video, I saw Joe's video which was also good, but your video that shows the drivers, and has more detail on the internals is really fantastic. Plus you have 2, and Joe only had one, so the review of how they work as a pair is important. This is clearly a very very upper end lifestyle product. In the right space, they'd be sooooo sick!

Erin, you are one of the best reviewers out there. No-nonsense, know your stuff (and Klippel) and present really well. I really want to hear the Cyngs, preferably a trio as it potentially could enable not only multiple sub, but DBA. Would you know if they have DBA programming as well as multisub? The other thing I'm really curious about is the woofers being mounted up and down-firing. I've been exploring to mount mine like that but the general consensus seems to be that gravity will "unlinearize" the response over time. The sagging will have different effect on the one pointing up to the one pointing down. As you know the coil offset will be effected, bringing BL asymmetry, and over calendar time distortion. What are your views on this, and was it something you discussed with Cyng? Perhaps the fact that these are small drivers will mitigate the effect?

Even if anechoic measurements aren't possible, the compression and distortion tests in the written review will be great... If it can do what it claims, maybe I'll have to price out this system vs expanding my Genelec 8260 system.

You’re right. I didn’t even think about it because I was so invested in the binaural demos and being bummed I could get anechoic measurements. I’ve already boxed them up to send back. The best I can do is to say that when I had 3 in my living room, I was getting about 102dB output at my MLP. The three were with two in front (at about 4m) and one to the right about 3m.

What Spl does it get at belowv40hz. Impressive it can dive down so low. The home pod 2 gets low to 30hz but only at 80db. Still impressive for such a tiny design on the HomePod. Huge xmax with computational distortion management

I was going to say you could cheat and feed it periodic pink noise to see the response in the time domain, but I don't think its available in REW. ARTA does it if I recall, but the plots and data are a bit more on a budget by comparison. Not as nice and informative. That and the DSP processing may destroy the timing information in the signal. Sucks cause that's the first thing I wanted to know! Oh well... On a similar note it would be cool to get my hands on something like an Sennheiser Ambeo Soundbar. Be really interesting to see how they process the direct and reflected sound to achieve the spatial imaging, and even from the sound demos it seems to work like it should.

Which Binaural Microphone are you using? I HIGHLY recommend the Sonic Presence SP15. From my personal and very thorough testing, the SP15 is PERFECTLY FLAT. I was astonished to say the least. Together with the Sennheiser HD400 Pro/HD 560s it provides extremely accurate binaural reproduction. I also personally tested the HD400 Pro and discovered that they are PERFECTLY FLAT to the human ear (Equal Loudness Contour) at 85dB SPL reference. Additionally, the angled transducers of the HD400 Pro/HD 560s provides a natural and accurate reproduction of the soundstage and imaging. Perfectly flat microphone with perfectly flat headphones = accurate reproduction (provided you are not boosting or attenuating the level of the reproduction relative to the actual source).

@@ErinsAudioCorner I used my very experienced audio engineer ears and a bit of logical deduction by comparing the reproduction with the source. After carefully examining several songs that I am very familiar with in terms of FR, I discovered that the perceived FR of the SP15 together with the Sennheiser HD400 Pro is identical to the source (coming from my speaker setup). Due to this I deduce that the SP15 must be perfectly flat, since I also discovered the Sennheiser HD400 Pros to PERFECTLY CONFORM to the Equal Loudness Contour at 83-85 dB SPL.
@thatchinaboi1
@thatchinaboi1 2 жыл бұрын
@@ErinsAudioCorner I initially expected some deviation by assuming that the SP15 is NOT perfectly flat. But to my surprise, I was wrong. If the perceived FR of the reproduction is identical to the source then that most likely means the SP15 is PERFECTLY FLAT (electronically) while the Sennheiser HD400 Pro is PERFECTLY FLAT (to the human ear) at 83-85 dB SPL reference.

@@ErinsAudioCorner Thanks for the cool design Elisabeth! It would be cool to hear about product design challenges on an item like this - far from standard. I bet there were constraints but at the same time some serious acoustics ability! - parts that had to be custom made due to other constraints, or parts that relied on DSP from the start?

If you had to be an extremist, would you say neo magnets make everything else look like trash when it comes to magnetic field strength vs volume, strength vs weight, and overall not being a wretched engineer? I don't see the point in many subwoofers of having a heavier magnet. I'd rather have them easier to handle... Just brace the box properly and have dual opposing woofers and things could be a little smaller and lighter with the same performance on multi-thousand dollar subs. Nice to see a new company not just using legacy materials and ultra-archaic engineering in new speakers.
@FSXgta
@FSXgta 2 жыл бұрын
The main thing is the cost, neo magnets costs more. If you are fine with that you can build your DIY subs to your desired spec
@ErinsAudioCorner
@ErinsAudioCorner 2 жыл бұрын
Weight it one aspect. But in terms of performance, a neo magnet can also be useful for its size; it won’t block the backside of the speaker like a larger ferrite magnet would. This is especially important for small midrange drivers.

I was disappointed at the Binaural Demo. I expected you to play some actual music and show us how the staging and imaging changes with the app. It is very difficult to demonstrate it using only pink noise. Please consider putting out a Binaural Demo with music.
