We’ve always known the Blackbird was fast, but it was never really possible to get a SENSE of how fast that is. Just numbers on a page. Until now… seeing that Starfighter, itself being one of the fastest aircraft ever made… get left in the dust like that? Sobering. The Blackbird is one of mankind’s crowning engineering achievements. Right up there with the Saturn V. Man… 60’s tech was bold AF. The freakin Tomcat was being designed during this time too.

there's story i read (in a book about the Blackbird) where one is flying back to a base in UK from No. Africa, and the two-man crew wanted to save time by flying straight across French airspace. that was during the time that France didn't want any fly-overs because of deal with Libya, etc. etc. Our pilots knew that but went anyways and about halfway they were intercepted by a couple of French Mirages (which is an admirable fighter jet itself). They were telling our guys to "pull over" or something like that, but they just didn't want to be bothered, and so while one pilot gave the Mirages a one-finger salute, the other one hit the after-burners and it was "Au revoir, mon ami!". Not shading the French AF but I love that story.

That is actually a NF-104A, it has an additional Rocketdyne 27kN rocket engine (visible exiting from the vertical tail above the jet engine exhaust). That particular aircraft (tail number 60756) following the SR-71 set an unofficial world altitude record of 120,800 feet on 6 December 1963, piloted by USAF Major Robert Smith. As for the SR-71 pulling away like it did, USAF Major Brian Shul mentions in a lecture that the SR-71 could accelerate from just above its stall speed of around 140 kts to over 600 kts in a matter of 5 seconds when in full afterburner.

When I was a kid in the 80's I watched an SR-71 fly over Tucson AZ. Laying in the back of the el Camino down by Ruffroth and I-10. I recognized it from my GI-Joe toy I had. I told my dad I seen the Blackbird plane when he came out of the store, and he looked at me like I was the biggest fibber in the world. A few months later it was on exhibit in the Davis Monthon air Museum and they talked about how they flew it in for its final flight. I'll never forget the look on my dad's face as I glared at him. Lol

Fantastic video. I grew up in the Antelope Valley in the late 50s and 60s, and my grandparents lived about a mile north of Plant 42, where both planes were built. My dad was one of the flight surgeons for Plant 42, and my godfather, Bill Chambers, worked on both the A12 and SR-71. Videos like this fill me with pride.

I flew with SR-71 AC commander Pat Bledsoe numerous times as his FO on a 737 and FE on the 727. Second best aviation story I ever heard was from Pat. He taught me some advanced thermal dynamics. What an honor! Absolute gentleman. #1 best story ever was Don Birdsall WW2 Distinguished Flying Cross recipient and the Bag O Bolts. He lived next door to Chuck Yeager during the right stuff days and flew with all of them boys. He left a silver bullet with his ashes in it for me when he passed. Godspeed Don🇺🇸

There was high resolution videos on cellulose, before any of us were born. In the late 70s and early 80s, early digital charge-coupled image sensors started to make inroads, and it was god-awful. But it was cheaper than film. Now the latest electronic image sensors are a viable alternative to film for color, light gathering, and clarity. But don't imagine things have just been steadily getting better and better with time! It was very good in the distant past, then it got worse b4 it got better!

The beginning shot of both planes reminds me of the post card size pictures of fighter aircraft they would sell in the 70's. Also how far computer sims have come from MS's first one. I have flown the Huey and M2000 on this, that in its self takes some dedication with the manuals not withstanding the equipment. I also loved the ground view and 104 pilot glancing through the front window touch. Keep it up. ; )

the airplane you are showing is actually an NF104A Aerospace trainer that is equipped with a 6,000 pound thrust rocket motor mounted in the tail. There were 3 F-104As converted to NF104s for zoom climbs to as much as 121,000 feet to train astronauts on using hydrogen peroxide thrusters, which were mounted on the wings and nose, in zero gravity and near space conditions for those who would be flying the Gemini and Apollo spacecraft. All F-104s were limited to Mach 2.20 due to the temperature ram rise in the engine intakes. The NF-104A could probably gone Mach 3 had the engine inlets been redesigned. Chuck Yeager screwed the pooch on one of the zoom climbs when he blew the profile and got into a flat spin at 106,000 feet. Yes, Yeager was responsible for the crash of one of the three NF104A Aerospace Trainers because he was too arrogant to take the simulator training for the very precise flight profile.

Problem is, that you must let a generation have the opportunities to grow and innovate. What happend is that since the 70s, wages stagnated while productivity boomed. Then there comes the inflation which makes everything more expensive. Suddenly, one man working a job is not enough to buy a house and feed a family. So the wife has to work too. Less time to take care of the kids and form strong family bonds. And so on...

@@DanielSmith-uy3yg ...All good brother. I appreciate what this person is doing. And that was actually supposed to say they...not he. But the T at the end of the "but" right before i should have hit it twice so the "they" started properly mixed with getting older and possibly a little high when i was typing...it got messed up and since the sentence made sense, auto correct or spell check didn't flag it. So no disrespect to the poster of the vid at all. Just something the developers should have known. Because that particular one at a time igniting of the burners on the SR71 is something that is well known. But yes...the average creator may not know certain little things about every aircraft. So you are right in what you said. Either way... Peace.

This particular model (NF-104A" went to 120,000 feet. Most Starfighters were electronically limited to Mach 2.2, using electronics to reduce thrust as necessary to remain at or below Mach 2.2 -- so no, the F-104 wasn't necessarily at "full throttle".

One of the most beautiful man made machines ever crafted. The Lockheed A12 (CIA operated blackbird) was already constructed in 1962 in the JFK era. It was outlandish, it was an alien aircraft only feasible in a scifi movie but it was true. If America can spiritualize itself to this level of commitment it maybe can stop its current downfall. Maybe another Kennedy can kickstart the needed morality to become the true land of the brave.

So, I'll add this to the SR-71's credits. The SR-71 was sitting on a runway full afterburner and brakes locked, straining to keep the plane from rolling forward. A Starfighter flying at full throttle with the afterburners lit, came flying parallel to the runway the SR-71 was sitting on. When the F-104 was abeam the SR-71, the Blackbird released its brakes. The Blackbird was up off the ground, wheels up and got to the end of the runway before the Starfighter. Now if that doesn't give you goosebumps, I don't know what will. Mach 3+ my ass! The Blackbird is fast. Very, Very fast. Faster than what they tell you.
@speedlever
@speedlever Жыл бұрын
2 questions. 1 - how long was the runway? 2 - could the brakes really hold the sr71 at full afterburner? I have my doubts about that.

@@speedlever To be honest, I wasn't told where this took place. But I would think around 10,000 ft. which is still a mind-blowing achievement for a plane that was designed with slide rules in 1958 by the Lockheed "Skunk Works".
@frankmmiii

@@speedlever Barely. The plane was probably being pushed slowly down the runway by the thrust of those Pratt & Whitney's. But I'm also guessing he went full throttle about 20 to 30 seconds before the F-104 crossed the threshold at full speed. It usually takes around 7 to 10 seconds for jet engines to spool up. Sorry for the 1-year delay. I never received a notification.
