A conversation with Bernardo Kastrup
The dominance of the mechanistic-materialist world view seems to be broken. Important findings in the field of quantum mechanics have made scientists and philosophers question the paradigm that was long taken for granted. On top of it, that paradigm turned out to be incapable of solving the hard problem of consciousness. As a result, during the last decades novel ideas about the relation between consciousness and reality have come to the fore. Idealist philosophies, which propose that everything in reality is eventually made up of mental processes, have returned. One of the more vocal defenders of idealism is Bernardo Kastrup. Holding a Phd both in computer sciences and philosophy, this director of the Essentia Foundation (www.essentiafoundation.org/) is frequently asked on Podcasts, KZfaq videos and television shows to explain why he thinks "materialism is baloney" and why an idealist view of our universe is a much more convincing possibility. He builds his argumentation on scientific facts and analytic philosophy, but I've always felt his ideas resonate extremely well with age old monistic and non-dualist forms of religion and mysticism. So I invited Bernardo on Re-visioning Religion to talk about possible links between his form of idealism and traditional religious concepts. After first clarifying some basic elements of his thinking, we discussed whether he is in fact talking about God; how his views relate to Hinduism, Islam and Christianity; why this helps us to reinterpret Carl Jung; how he disagrees with many "mind over matter" approaches of contemporary spiritualities; and why he thinks an idealist perspective has a lot to say about the meaning of life.

Notice the simple way Bernardo explains his ideas compared to others. Also notice the way he owns errors of judgement. He has both done the work and he cares deeply about others. Bernardo is probably one of the greatest philosophers in the history of our species. Very grateful to have this individual with us.

Fascinating discussion! I love Kastrup and watch everything I can find on Idealism. But, he generally shies away from implications to spirituality. I’ve been hoping for a discussion like this for a long time! Thank you.

I have listened to many of Bernardo's interviews, but for me this is getting very close to one of the best. Thanks so much for sharing. I can't believe there is only 112 subscribers on this channel, assume it's not being going for long. A great set of questions because it distills so much in a relatively short timeline. I especially like the Jungian content (I confess I am a big Jung fan), and the punchy definition of the Individuation process Bernardo provides. Im going to listen to this again.

This Podcast is a GEM! I found BK's contention that the nature of existence is mental quite intriguing. I had read from an e-manuscript, a friend had forwarded to me, entitled ALL LETTERS, that existence is mental, but this is a different version of the same thing. I found BK's reference to Hinduism, Islam and Christianity very refreshing, especially given the fact that this is a scientist and a philosopher,, whose stand is trying to bridge the dichotomy between science and (spirituality) religion. His reference to the book of Job (Christianity) and the contention that God is manifested in the forms in creation, is quite revealing also. Job 19:26 confirms this as, "And though after my skin worms destroy this body, yet in my flesh shall I see God". This is a confirmation of the Greek aphorism of KNOW THYSELF. All that every individual needs to do is to know oneself! And, as BK has advised, preaching solves nothing. It is the individual knowledge of oneself that shall change the world.

I love BK, but I think it will be someone else who reaches a Rogan podcast-level audience. BK’s ideas and books demand more active, rigorous thinking than the average person can even access having zero philosophical background. People listen to Rogan while doing other stuff: jogging, errands, cleaning the house etc. If Bernardo is unpacking an idea and you tune-out for 10 seconds, you can and will get lost. Every freshman philosophy student has experienced that initial shock when engaging with philosophy for the first time. It takes time to learn the jargon. My experience with ‘Materialism is Baloney’ was of finishing chapters and immediately going back to read through it again. Joe-schmo will be completely baffled and then convert that feeling into hostility.

The proof of Anselm of Canterbury. One of the most discussed ontological proofs of God's existence in history. For centuries it has had many philosophical supporters as well as critics. But it remains an interesting piece of logic whatever stance you eventually take. A good explanation on it can be found here: www.thecollector.com/anselm-of-canterbury-proof-god-existance/

The problem of reducing substance to processes is that they lack self-unity. This is the same issue the materialist has: how to maintain unity of consciousness(formal unity) through diverse processes(material divrsity). This would imply necessarily a grounding substance of a different sort. This needs not be dualism for you are not positing two substances, the material can still be an activity of the same substance, and self-substances can still be disassociated, but the underlying substance would be just consciousness. Yet that would maintain a distinction although not separation(not multiple substances but multiple modes and self-relating of a singular substance). The dualism Bernardo points to, seems a very naive sort of dualism. One can maintain diversity without appealing to such radical ontological separation. As long as there's no ontological separation there is no need to maintain dualism, and the diversity can be explained through modes of the underlying substance that gives rise to multiple forms.

My favorite philosopher. All is consciousness but maybe it is better that only a few understand this. If all understood it there would be no need for science. So that we may evolve physically the blindness of material science is necessary. Material science does bring benefits. In our dual system science cannot bring all good. It brings both boons and banes as it is operating within duality. At some point at the end of evolution all will understand that all is consciousness or mind.
