Today I'm doing a small and somewhat ineffective investigation into the demonstrator (clear) versions of the Kaweco CLASSIC Sport Foutain Pens. I've had several different versions of this pen, but I never realized that there were demonstrator versions available, and I looooove demonstrator pens. So I found one demonstrator variant, for the standard $25, and then I found another, for $70, and I was expecting there to be something special about it.
Spoiler alert, there's nothing inherently special about it except that it's just rare. The Kaweco Black Crystal is apparently a limited run of 1000 pieces, which accounts for the increased price. It's really my own fault for not reading the item descriptions better and expecting that there was more to it. A limited run is totally fair reason for charge more, it's just a bit of a jolt when that's not what you're expecting. But like I said, it's my fault, I hoaxed myself!

1. Welcome to the baffling world of Collector's Edition fountain pens. You pay more basically so that not too many other people can have the same pen as you. 2. Some very fine detail you achieve with that Kaweco.
@nuloom
@nuloom 3 жыл бұрын
i suppose paying more for rarer pens is something you really can’t avoid given that they have to be manufactured at small scale.
@fakename287
@fakename287 2 жыл бұрын
@@nuloom but... but it's literally the same pen???
@nuloom
@nuloom 2 жыл бұрын
@@fakename287 making a different pen is just more expensive by virtue of using materials that the manufacturer isn't accustomed to. The material orders are smaller so end up more expensive per kg/whatever the order price unit is. Also it's not like they have some magical "drop any material you can think of here and I will shape it into your pen" machines. If a limited edition pen is made from metal instead of regular plastic, or perhaps even plastic that's harder/behaves differently, it adds on a lot of effort vs making regular pens. The less optimised every part of the process the more expensive a pen will get, and that can happen even if it's just a different colour or engraving. That, plus of course the extra companies sometimes put on the things in general. It has no much explanation other than just a use of people who want to pay more for a product that will probably sell out anyway.

Don't change anything Peter, about how you do your Peter Draws KZfaq Channel. You're unique, and I rather enjoy your expertise and the fact that you did research on the more pricey pen. Nah, you got it down fella. Leave your style of presentation just as it is. Never try to change perfection. ~❤~ Edits to say: I loved your drawing here btw. I love when you have large sections of pure black colored into the creation. It really makes it have depth. Also how you effortlessly drew the leavey vines was impressive. It was like, "bloop a leafy vine here - now another". Just a sweet artistic gift you have Peter. 😎

DLC is a real thing and is pretty common in tools used for machining and certain types of pocket knives. It essentially makes a super strong finish that won't wear off and makes the metal underneath rust resistant and keeps it from wearing out and scratching. I guess it's meant to extend the life of the nib or at least keep it looking new for a long as possible

I seem to run into the same "Special Edition" extra expense with Retro 51, and yes, Kaweco for sure. Some of the thieves on eBay try pawn them off, at excessive prices, with terms like "very rare", "hard to find", or the most popular one, "VINTAGE". Which I believe is the code word for bleed the sucker dry!! As always Peter, a great fun video to watch, and a bonafide honest inquiry! Thank you very much. God bless, & be well.

When I saw the tagline about an improvement on your "favorite" pen, I thought perhaps it was some kind of updated information on why the Muji round aluminum pens seen to be getting scarce (and why the prices jumped to double on the Japanese sites a few months ago, though they're still on Amazon now for just under $18). Yeah, it's the "limited edition" that makes it collectible and thus a premium price. Although, I am glad to see that for that price they include ALL the extras they should, like a converter, a full box of cartridges rather than just one in the tube, AND a clip, and all in a presentation box. I'd go a little higher than you and give them $25 for all the extras (that box of ink cartridges is about $6, too, if you pay full retail some places, and I'd credit 'em an easy $7 for the tin). So, then, you're really only paying about $25 over what the basic Kaweco Sport and all the goodies would cost. It's not to me, but I'm sure there are some Kaweco lovers and collectors who think that $25 is more than reasonable for a limited edition pen with such a small production run. Almost forgot... My Narwhal Peter Pen with a fine point arrived yesterday! I inked mine up with De Atramentis Document Fog Grey. Looks and writes beautifully! So glad I managed to snag one before they were out this time! BTW... Did you ask Dan if he borrowed your pen and didn't put it back? See if it's under his couch cushions?

I considered getting this Kaweco for its black medallion and nib but then saw the price tag and decided against it. I would reconsider the buy if it were made using a metal barrel, if the price was comparable to that found with the AL Sport line, and if Kaweco got rid of (what I consider to be cheezy) the "Black Crystal" wording. I'd also purchase if the black medallion/nib were put on any of the Frosted versions, particularly the white (Natural Coconut) and yellow (Sweet Banana) ALONG with a price drop. Thanks for the video!

From what I've read, any of the black coated nibs have issues with the plating coming off. Not sure if it is worth the extra cost... That said, the regular Kaweco Sport is one I like. OdE, another KZfaqr, has an obsession with the Kaweco Sport, and is well on the way to having one of each ever made. Like you, I'd prefer the syringe filler (the "official" name of the type of converter you have) over the cartridge. I'd rather have the converter over the ultimate cost of the cartridges (5x what bottled ink cost, average.) I'm on a fixed income, so... 😉 I have a pen that's even smaller than the Sport. A vintage New Diamond Midget. Uncapped, about the same size as a cartridge for the Kaweco. Posted, it's still tiny, but useable. Thanks for the commentary on the Kaweco, and letting us see your drawing!

Hi Peter I saw some people in the comments partly explaining that DLC is legit and used in tools. I think how it relates to you though is that they tend to be stiffer nibs, which i know you like. Maybe you could tell a difference vs your other Kawecos, but maybe not. For what its worth, they sell their normal feed/nib replacements for 11 bucks and they sell the DLC replacements for 40 so there's your missing cost. with the converter, the clip and the DLC nib its actually a pretty decent deal, if one decides they like DLC nibs.

Black Crystal (Mori Maril) is an ancient Elven crystal compound. Only a limited amount of it has ever been found and it is said to be valuable in the most extreme sense of the word. I'm amazed that you were able to even get a pen holding some amount of Mori Maril. Please consider securing it somewhere safe, it makes me sad to break these news to you, but there are many who actively seek such ancient matter. I think I have made my point crystal clear by now but I don't see why I wouldn't iterate once more that you should take utmost care of the pen, despite the sacrifices that will most likely have to be made.

A limited edition should have something limited about it though, a unique touch. Different color doesn't really count, at least not with the price difference in mind. Edit: DLC coating kind of makes up for it, or does it? At least it is a legit thing. DLC is used in high-performance stuff like Formula1 engines and drill bits.

Seems like something that the German pen companies do. Release a colour variation in a limited number, it becomes a "collectable." Lamy does the same thing with the Safari or Al-Star (which I find ugly in general, so I'm not adding to the Lamy "collectability." 😁) Just gimme a good writer, and I'm happy. 😉 Oh. As to the black nib. Almost all black nibs tend to have issues with the coating coming off at some point. Not really worth the additional cost, IMO.

At that price I would genuinely expect a crystal pen body or at least grip section.

Hi Dan! Hi Peter! I've been losing things lately. I go to get something, it's not there, I look everywhere don't find it, then later go back and it's exactly where it was meant to be. Weird. Don't know if it's me or people sneakily borrowing things and returning them.
