An Inside Look at the Exotic Animal Trade: Profiles by VICE

Wildlife trafficking is estimated to be a $19 billion per year global business, surpassed only by black-market sales and trafficking of drugs, humans, and firearms.
In the United States, regulation of private ownership of exotic animals is determined by each state, allowing for loopholes and oversight. Animals are bought and traded through auctions, backyard breeders, illicit online sales and more. The industry is growing right in our backyards.
VICE travels to Ohio to rescue a cougar, then to Texas for an exotic livestock auction and undercover visit to a gaming ranch where the animals are sold and hunted for up to $15,000 a piece.

I mean if you're referring to the animals at the rescue facility, its likely just ptsd. As he said, a lot of them were kept as pets and circus animals (in small confined spaces) so even with all the added room, other animals to play with, they are just scarred and can't act like normal animals.

+HYPER MASTIA Removing any necessary part from an animal IS an actual crime here in he UK.The only body parts legally removable by a qualified veterinarian are the sex organs (testes and uterus/ovaries) in a normal spay/neuter procedure. Only puppies which will go on to become working dogs working jobs which may occur a tail injury are allowed to have their tail docked. This was only banned about 8-10 years ago so you do see dogs with docked tails still, but when compared to their fully tailed counterparts from the same breeds, the tail, there as it should be, looks far better breed by breed. Nice to see ear cropping go too, now pinscher breeds look normal again.

My aunt used to have a pet cougar but she didn’t get it through illegal trade. She actually saved it from a bear trap while she was hunting bucks. Not long after she came home, the cougar had followed her and kept scratching on her door. She didn’t let it in her house or anything either because she doesn’t wanna make it too comfortable around her. So she just keeps her outside and gives her everything she needs. She fed her chicken meat and buck meat. She also made her a little shelter in her back yard. It was a really crazy experience when you would go to her house, but the cougar was actually really kind to humans from what I’ve seen lol.

Oh yeah and cows don't serve any purpose, lets just overlook that we just breed them, overload them in cages, let them get some weird diseases, suffer, kill them, and we get a happy meal, but no, they don't have a purpose, of course not, I guess we should stop eating cows and burry them, they were in fact slaughtered, and abused, but who cares right? Honestly you don't seem to have much of a purpose either, should we trow you to feed the tigers?

Glenn Smith I am 65 and I have worked in rescue both wildlife and dogs and cats from the age of 12 till 5 years ago when I became disabled. There two types of rescuers. The first one really cares about the animals and in the case of wild animals want to see them in better conditions if they cannot be returned to the wild for one reason or another. The second is basically a legal hoarder. The legal hoarder loves the animals but they believe that no one can love, care for or respect the animal (whether true or not) better than them personally. The "rescuer" (legal hoarder ) will do anything to remove animals out of private ownership no matter how wonderful the private situation may be. Again it's because they really really believe that NO ONE can love and respect the animal more than them.I lleftwildlife rescue because there were more and more of the second type coming into the rescue groups. Don't get me started or I will get into how much I hate PETA and H$U$. I have worked with those hypocrites in the past too. Please remember that there is always two sides to every story with rescues and animal groups like PETA and H$U$.

Good to know there are some truly unbelievable people working against the scum who sell such stunning animals illegally. In my opinion this is even more sickening than the drug trafficking business. These wild animals belong in the wild, not in man made cages. Its exactly the same as you being kept in a cage for years on end. If I ever have kids I hope they'll never see such gorgeous creatures behind fences being ill treated.

Its still considered an exotic pet. Snakes, reptiles and other non-normal pets such as ferrets, large parrots and some places even consider rats as exotic cause its not a hamster, gerbil, cat, dog or a gold fish. Also just cause ball pythons are common pets does not mean they and other reptiles are not trafficked badly like other animals. I am in the hobby and have a few snakes and other reptiles, all of mine are from local reputable breeders, but I also know that there are people out there that do not care, breed them in masses in tiny containers (like the Ball python in the video) and just do it to sell money, cause you can get over 5,000 dollars for one female breeding ready piebald ball python. Them, tegus, monitor lizards, turtles and tortoises, iguanas and even bearded dragons are in a VERY bad way with illegal smuggling and trafficking, as are some more uncommon names that are usually wild caught imports who generally are very sick and mistreated.

@@xBloodxFangx not much of what you said was relevant to my comment. I'm a snake keeper too (lesser ball python and amel cornsnake) and I was only making a point about how at that time stamp, the guy kept going on about how people wanted rare endangered animals, while showing a ball python (which are of least concern on the conservation status). I think it counts as misinformation because if someone who doesn't know shit about snakes watches this documentary, sees a ball python, and then goes online and sees people are owning ball pythons, they might wrongfully assume that person (like you and I) are owning an endangered species just for shits and giggles.

Growing up outside of Houston, there was a guy that lived just a couple streets away from our house that had a tiger. It escaped one time and he and his friends had to hunt it down, tranq it, load it into a van and take it back home. He got rid of it a little while later. I could be out playing in our yard and hear that thing roaring just a couple streets over. You get used to it after a while but after it escaped that one time everyone felt a lot less safe knowing that thing was nearby and had already gotten out before. I think the owner was worried after that happened as well and that’s why he sold it or gave it away, not sure which.

Idk the specifics from something like census data, but if I had to guess it was probably around 90% conservative.
