Is there any character analysis on Edna
@ottoabrams56139 жыл бұрын
The4OClockClubVids How does Edna the maid contribute to the play? A Character AnalysisHannah Prentice.2 fact that she is seen only as her profession; the audience is given no details about her appearance or her personality because they don‟t need to know. She is only the maid.Notably then, it should be highlighted that out of all the characters,Edna is the only one who has a similar background to Eva Smith.Both of them are seen simply as socially inferior working girls. In theplay, this view is shared by the Birlings and Gerald and contextually,it is shared by society. In 1912, class was a very rigid structure thatdetermined what style of life you had. For example, Gerald is upper class and could be deemed to have “been born with a silver spoon inhis mouth”, whereas Edna and Eva Smith are in the poorer working class, often exploited by the money-orientated superiors, who isArthur Birling in both cases.Edna is given few stage directions. “ Edna Please, Sir, an inspector’s called.” “ Edna Yes, sir. He says it’s important.” This may be because the actress playing Edna doesn‟t need extra information about how to deliver the lines due to her character not requiring much to be established; she isn‟t seen as significant, which is Priestley again trying to tell the audience that they need to care foreveryone, not just themselves. The repeated use of „Sir‟ when talking to Birling is a reminder of how stark the class divide was at thebeginning of the 20 th century. As she is employed by him, and to beunemployed was a horrendous situation for a young woman to findherself in, Edna must be polite to Birling, despite how ignorant anddisinclined he is to take responsibility for the plight of his hundreds of poor workers.On the other hand, there is one rather important stage direction thatEdna has. “ Edna (opening door, and announcing) Inspector Goole.” This stage direction must be a necessary one or Priestley wouldn‟t have included it. In my opinion, by the actress who plays Edna beingspecifically told to open the door and to announce that the Inspectorhas arrived is as though Edna is heralding in an opportunity forchange. It is the people like Edna who would benefit most from theBirlings learning the Inspector‟s lesson ; her life could improve vastly. Therefore, she is allowed a seldom moment away from her docileobedience and delivers the Inspector into the room readily, evenstopping the Birlings from finishing their conversation. How does Edna the maid contribute to the play? A Character AnalysisHannah Prentice.3 A major thing that Edna contributes to the play is a measure of status. “As he hesitates there is a ring at the front door. They look at each other in alarm. Birling Now who’s this? Had I better go? Mrs B. No. Edna’ll go. I asked her to stay up to make us some tea.” Edna is the Birlings‟ parlour maid, and so when Mrs Birling says „Iasked her‟, she really means she told Edna to do so because Edna isemployed to do what she is told. Priestley has the Birling householdhave maids and cooks- Birling Good dinner too, Sybil. Tell cook from me. This is a way to show the audience that the Birlings are in theworking class but are wealthy enough to be able to hire others to dowork for them. In context, this allows the Birlings and Gerald to beclearly symbolic of Priestley‟s political standing. He felt that it was the upper classes that caused and profited from both World War One andWorld War Two, and who needed to be changed to stop history repeating itself again and again, resulting in the deaths of millions.Overall, I feel that Edna the parlourmaid contributes more thaninitially meets the eye. Yes, she is just a maid in the household whoalerts the Birlings and Gerald as to who has just come in the door andlets the Inspector in, but she represents more than that. She showsthe audience that the Birlings are wealthy enough to employ others todo household jobs for them. Furthermore, she symbolises that the Inspector‟s lesson is a sorely needed one as she is in the same class as Eva Smith. Finally, she illuminates to the audience that the Birlingsare the bourgeois capitalists who will be the ones to profit if society as a whole doesn‟t change their ways. Without Edna, this wouldn‟t be as clear to the onlookers. „An Inspector Calls‟ first began to be perf ormed in 1945, just after theend of the Second World War and the atomic bomb being dropped overHiroshima. The threat of mankind wiping itself out was a very realdanger. Society had to transform or it would run the chance of destroying itself.Whether c oincidental or otherwise, since „An Inspector Calls‟ began to reach the public, society did just that. Since 1945, the United Nationshas been set up, the Just War Act agreed and the National HealthService created, which helps to give everyone the chance to lead How does Edna the maid contribute to the play? A Character AnalysisHannah Prentice.4 fulfilling lives. Society today is much healthier and compassionate. Priestley‟s timeless message may well have helped to ring in the new changes, and without Edna-the seemingly insignificant parlour maid-it may not have been so startling clear a message. Isn‟t that the most a character can possibly contribute to a play?
