Join us for Part 1 as we interview iconic boat designer David Yost. 'DY' answers customer questions while we discuss his beginnings in the boat industry and his evolution as the world's premier canoe designer.
Timestamps:
1:09- Can you create a new 16.8 Cruiser with some design tweaks?
2:00- Since there's such history with the Chestnut design, do you have to factor that in when you design a new boat?
5:50- What do you foresee the next generation of canoe designs to be?
9:04- Which boat did you learn the most from?
11:20- When building a prototype, do you often get it right on the first try?
12:12- How did you get into canoe design?
14:37- How do you get inspiration for your new designs?
19:24- How did you meet Bill Swift?
22:14- Do you have any designs you're working on right now? (sneak peak)
25:05- What lead you to determine the chine shape and hull shape of the DY Special?
28:50- How did the DY Special lead to the Shockwave?
31:50- The evolution of 'chines' in DY designs
33:15- Is there a canoe design that you've wanted to do, but haven't had the chance yet?
36:20- What is the biggest obstacle you face when designing a new boat?
37:50- How many boats have you built prototypes for over the years? How many production boats?
38:26- How do you decide seat positions and seat heights?
40:30- What is the industry standard for measuring rocker, and what is your method?
42:35- What is your favourite boat that you've designed?
45:10- What is your favourite Loon Works boat?
45:47- Can you explain the design philosophies between yourself and fellow designer John Winters?
48:00- What is your dream paddle trip?
49:20- What is your favourite canoe colour scheme?
50:20- What is your favourite two person tripping canoe? (tripping stories)
53:20- What is your favourite Swift solo canoe or pack boat? (more tripping stories)
55:45- Since we can use computer technology to design the best contours/shapes, why do we keep making new Prospectors?
57:15- How should consumers make the choice between a Prospector or a Keewaydin design?
58:45- What are the factors paddlers that should consider when deciding between an Adirondack or a Kiwassa style kayak?
61:30- Do you see yourself continuing to design boats in the future? How has your son Carl gotten involved in recent years?

I met DY at a Pennsylvania expo on solo canoeing. Such a great experience. He mentioned one of the first boats he built was a shortened Gruman that had been torn in half. He ended up being able to build a shorter boat. He also said my Old Town Penobscot 16 R was a well designed and performing all around boat. I enjoy it but I am ready for a lighter boat!!! I appreciated your help Bill a little while back in a conversation about the Algonquin 16. Hopefully I'll get the next Swift that becomes available. Great interview!!!!!

Yes! A big man solo tripper! I’m 6’4 and 240 and most boats don’t allow me much equipment before they are at the max ideal payload. Hurry! Make us a good boat! Thanks!

Love to hear Dave talk about the need for a "big man solo" - as someone who is a "big man" I appreciate the inclusivity. Put me on the list for one ;)

Great with the Harry Roberts story. I bought my first DY Special (I was teaching for the Pack Shop in Waukesha, WI) in 81 or 82 from Harry and he sure talked up David. I still have that boat but have used it for expeditions over the past 45 years and quit racing (with Errol and Beth Schluter). Sawyer had beefed up the bottom for me with glass ribs inboard in 3 locations for strength and ramming rocks. Still love that boat. So envious when I saw the new lightweight DY Special from Swift an Canoecopia. Looking at a trip across Wabakimi in it soon.

I first saw David, at one of the Spring Events, put on by Mid West Mountaineering. I was very impressed, as he outlined how he designed a canoe ! I build cedar strip canoes, and would love to spend a day, following David around his shop, as he builds a plug ! Thanks Bill for this great interview !

Amazing job guys! Such a great idea having DY share his knowledge with all of us. I'm still pumped to get that Cruiser 15.8 this spring, but I'll be keenly interested on the new prototype currently in development and look forward to checking it out one day. Thanks for this!

That was great, thanks for putting that together! Really excited to see that new big-boy solo in the spring. Looks like a Prospector 15 solo. Not a lot of options for us giants carrying a tripping load, but there is definitely a market.

What a lovely conversation to be a fly on the wall for! Thanks for asking my question first. Well, both the experts have spoken... seems I'm going to have to take a 9 hour drive over to Kangaroo Valley's @PaddlePortageCanoes to test paddle a Keewaydin 16 before the next order leaves Canada! Looking forward to seeing the solo prototype in the background of your chat in production too, sounds interesting (will it have a pack seat option?) 😊

If I may suggest a question for next time: How does differential rocker work (and how could one end of the boat sit higher in the water than the other if they both need the same buoyant force)? Thanks.
