As part of my Platform One Music college course I had the pleasure of interviewing Mark King, the lead singer of Level 42 with my dad filming it for me. It helps having family who do telly for a living! :-)

When I was learning the bass as a teenager in about 86, I tried and tried to play the lines to Lessons In Love. No chance. I just couldn't get over how can someone be that fast and that tight with rhythm? This is a band that was pure pop really but the most amazing musicians. Add to that Mark King and all that band are gentlemen. They are musicians who became famous as a product of their skills. Not like in modern times where people are famous for being famous and are usually awful people.

Mark King A legend ...wow you inspired my son .. classical piano player, blues jazz he loves them all ..The best times forever, seriously , was when Bill Haley came to the Gaumont Coventry, after that it exploded the music scene Larry Parnes brought over Gene Vincent , Eddie Cochran, The Everly Brothers, Billy Fury .we were very close to Gene ..... he was awesome , a beautiful person ... .. then Matrix Coventry the Yardbirds, The hollies, The Stones, The Who' these guys, just were amazing , completely and utterly looney's but could they play . phew' Soft Machine and other great bands appeared at the Uni in Coventry ... Ronnie Scotts club was bursting at the scenes with talent amazing talent . We could take our pick . the World was a buzz, You have the greatest show on Earth 'Woodstock' , Jimmy Henrix, Janice Joplin .. Jim Morrison . Joe Cocker ....Every act was perfection , the songs, these artists were writing, the words, so many messages for the World . but hey ho' what have the youngsters got now ...;I have never witnessed such depressions, there are no 'live concerts' just electronic 'junk' every youngsters head is starring at either computers unsmart phones or these mind destroying repticious games , the real world has disappeared into oblivion . GOOD BYE fun times helo enjoy the matrix . H G Wells the Time Machine we're in it

My friend and I attended the performance at the colosseum in Portland Oregon with the LEVEL 42 as the kicker then Tina Turner. Neither of us had seen Tina Or The awesome boys from the Isle of white and my female friend was smitten by Mike Lindup , and what girl with any marbles wouldn't. Just as soon the boys ended the encore, I turned to look at my friend.... We got up in unison and bolted for the back door where the Level 42 bus was likely to be parked. There was I light sprinkle more like heavy cold steam oh yeah , fog . Wasn't hard to find the bus, and much to our surprise there was no one else to meet these very kind humble and talented. As my dear friend Andre began climbing onto the bus hoping to ride off with Mister Lindup who was already hitched I would expect. Mark king was kind enough to step just on the stair as I approached and I said it's nice to meet you mister King, blah blah blah then I asked. Him advice for a green horn bassist. Just what he mentioned in this KZfaq interview, get with a drummer. I said well thank you ,this makes perfect sense. Then I handed him a multi colored wool scarf from Nordstroms in downtown Portlandia. He simply said well thank you , I feel warmer already ! I will always appreciate your d Message of hope for the resolution of the ongoing competitive strife selfishness and the resultant conflicts resulting in perpetual war. " As the lyrics states " And somehow life's going on and when it's said and done who will pay the bill it's such a bitter pill . But the battle is in your head ,one we always lose whichever side we choose because when the fighting is done we hear the distant guns of all those fighting still." I like to think that ," Love in a peaceful world was a song of our meeting that drizzly day 😊 well it always will be for me. Sincerely Sam Rogers 65 year old dude who signed up for military service to find a life beyond the strife of my dear parents who were just Kids trying to navigate the stress of reaching for the American Dream and resolve the personal trauma when my step father was abused with violent acts by his Friendsville Tennessee absentee father. I knew without a shadow of a doubt that although I was the result of a short affair by my Mother when I came home after school on day to walk into the house just as my mother said, " Well he isn't your son anyway." I never saw the man cry but this once , it was a surprise to me because he never treated me on iota differently. I was pissed at the cruelty she exhibited toward this gentle kind hard working funny and deeply spiritual Man .He possessed a certain wisdom that He carried with him. You could see it. And I would think .... Oh cool ! Yeah ! Like the time he was getting a small pool to kick back in the summer and he had paid for this pool in advance and when he realized that the pool was a bait and switch thing, he didn't lose his cool he just got even more cool when with the recipet for the pool in hand found a 17 horse chrome plated Go Cart engine ! That he picked up and we ,(:me and my two older brothers ) all strolled out like the Dukes of Dover! Man did that Go Cart Flat Move! Life in retrospect is Tripping me out ! Ive gotten somewhat pontifical! Lol ! Peace to all that lives ! That's a bit of my Wise English Teacher who has blown the doors of all the big mystery about God , religion , etc ... Beyond the dogma and opinions built upon tradition of a people then we have a the secular division etc etc .. This selfish strife never ends until we begin to judge without mercy that of ourselves. The answer is plain as the grimy though you might have in your mind at this very moment. Change your thoughts and you will change your world! I think a couple other pretty wise dudes like, oh Buddha and Oh um Jesus. It's such a relief that they aren't the first nor will they be the last Saints Saviors ,enlightened beings. The Christed One! We , each and every single solitary soul will eventually reach this divine achievement ! James Allen quote," where Self is ( egoism), Truth is not. Where TRUTH is SELF is not. 💥🎇💟🕉️☮️☯️☪️🪷✡️🪯🕎🔯⚛️☸️🛐🎆🪷PEACE , LOVE AND KEEP IT LIGHT YA'LL.

In the late 80's I worked in the Sound Department of the national TV station of Ireland & Mark & the band were the main act on the primer show that week. Normally after the evening meal break I would go back early to the studio & take advantage of the free time to play the Steinway piano in the studio when nobody was there, I'm not a piano player, but I loved trying to put together some jazz progressions...just fiddling around & on a steinway they always sounded great, as almost everything does. To my surprise Mark arrived in & we chatted for a few minutes before the Presenter, Director & Musical Director also arrived, all of whom I knew well. As a group they stood around the piano discussing how his input on the show show should go while Mark kept referring to me when it came to any musical questions....much to the confusion of the of the Musical Director. It was fun to watch his confused face but I thought it was best to clear things up and explain what had happened. I was the sound guy & Frank was the MD.......It was fun for me to have met Mark & to have been held in such esteem. A lovely guy & a great musician.

Been a dutch Level 42 fan for ages. (Even before Running in the family came out). They have been an inspiration to start playing bass myself. The first time I saw them live was in Ahoy (Rotterdam, Netherlands) back in 1989 I think it was. After that three more times within the last 30-ish years. The last time I believe I saw them in Utrecht and I even remembered I shed a tear or two, thinking to myself, “How much more often will these guys (Mike Lindup was back where he belonged too) peform live on stage..?” It was still thát good. It maybe was better than ever before, since they stayed true to the old stuff. Well… maybe one more time? ;-)

Such a wonderful interview Izzy. I know Sean, the sax player in Level 42, although I haven't had the pleasure of meeting Mark yet. As an 80's child, growing up there is no doubt that Level 42 inspired me and my band in England... I played funk in the early 90's until Jamiroquoi came along. But Level 42 were my first inspiration, and Leaving Me Now is still absolutely one of my all time favourite songs.

As @Mr Omlette says below; really great questions and amazing valuable advice from Mr. King. The part about 'you have to get out there' is so true, plus if you don't, then you miss out on the most amazing part of being a gigging musician, which is making people forget about their troubles and woes and have a really good time. This is part of why being a musician is about helping others, which of course balances out all the hours and hours of being alone practising. The other important theme mentioned is 'making your own way' and not riding on the back of family or networking. You have to be competent at doing your own thing whilst at the same time, working at being in a band so as to get the band member communications (almost telepathical at times) locked in and working. This usually only appears with musicians who have worked together quite a lot. Brilliant interview.

Well done with the interview. Funny, I was playing A Physical Presence in the car today, can't believe it was1985!!. 🥺 I've seen them about 6 times in the 80s in Belfast. Good on them for coming, when a lot of bands didn't. Marks slap solos in Mr Pink and the start of Love Games sound like a machine gun firing. Unless you play bass, you can't comprehend the physical demands of playing like that. Like Lessons in Love. How he plays that for a whole song, I've no idea. They're so unbelievably tight as a band. Fantastic jazz/funk/pop fusion. They were all great musicians. It's a brilliant live album. They sound at the top of their game, even though it was early days. I now feel very old.😩😩
