The thing I love about Mark King is, he's a good story teller & he holds my attention, but above all else is, he's a bass beast.😎

What a bloody brilliant piece of film making! Absolutely loved the way he was just encouraged to share all these wonderful stories and experiences with us. The man is a musical genius and yet still so humble and grateful for his life. He’s right too, the 80s were magical in so many ways 🎹🎸🎶💃

I've been a big fan of Level 42 ever since I first bought Love Games in 1981, always loved seeing them live and witnessing their supreme musicianship, whatever the line up of the band. The jewel in the Level 42 crown has always been Mark King. His outstanding bass playing, whether in full on jazz funk, slapping and snapping mode or in a moody walking bass line. His ability to play bass, sing and chew gum at the same time is the 8th wonder of the world. What I especially like about him is that he is a grounded man, devoid of ego, a true man of the people, a humble man. I have the utmost respect for his playing and song writing genius and I think his "ordinariness" makes the appeal even greater. Thanks for posting this video......brilliant 😃

@@oddities-whatnot I've been in similar situations such as that and the feeling you get is to mind your own business. You also can't hear the conversation between interviewer and interviewee, so that also factors into it. It's not like there's a microphone for all to hear what he's saying. It's clear from the very beginning with these things that it's a private conversation.

Really interesting interview from one of the stars of 80s pop/funk/jazz culture. Level 42 are one of my favourite bands, Mark King is famously one of the best bassists there has ever been, but the other band members are great musicians too. Phil Gould played tight funk rhythms with intricate cymbal and hi-hat patterns that you can clearly hear on the records. Boon Gould was an underrated guitarist and lyricist who seemed to always come up with the right guitar lick or phrasing that served the songs. Mike Lindup with his classical training had an ear for a tune and his melodic keyboard lines and vocal harmonies were integral to the band's sound. I think what Mark King says about pop music in the 1990s and beyond being one dimensional is true up to a point. I think a lot of chart music can be boring and monotonous, but the problem is the charts don't represent all of popular music. There is still some good music out there - it's just not in the charts or on mainstream channels. I feel that people these days focus too much on individual tracks and samples that you can hear from lots of different artists on streaming channels, but they no longer have the patience to listen to a single artist's body of work over several albums or gigs to get their full vision. Bands like Level 42 have a body of work which clearly shows they had many influences that seeped into their music . It gave them the musical education and broad canvas to go on and create a much richer sound of their own. In my opinion, they hit their peak with the album World Machine which is hands down their best album - fantastic tunes, brilliantly arranged and played by musicians who were at the top of their game. I would urge anyone who hasn't heard it to seek it out as a full body of work and not just for the handful of hit singles it produced. It's a pop/funk/jazz classic and still sounds fresh today.

I've still got the original LP, Cassette and CD editions of it at home. I couldn't agree more. 'World Machine' is a great album with some utterly timeless tunes on it.
