Frederick Ashton, Founder Choreographer of The Royal Ballet, created Les Deux Pigeons for The Royal Ballet Touring Company in 1961. Find out more: www.roh.org.uk/productions/the...
He restaged the work for the main company later that year as The Two Pigeons. He and his regular collaborator John Lanchbery (La Fille mal gardée) worked together to adapt André Messager’s 1886 score, created for a ballet by Louis Mérante at the Paris Opéra. Like Messager and Mérante, Ashton turned to La Fontaine’s fable of the same title for inspiration - but Ashton tells quite a different story. He explores the nature of love in a work that has deft comic lightness and soulful pathos in equal measure.

Her look of excitement at "and it's got pigeons in it" just makes my day. I love Lauren Cuthbertson so much.

Lauren Cuthbertsons is superb and true Ashton in her style When she does movements in the Pas de deux its as though Seymour is embodied in her -for those of us lucky enough to see Seymour the movements are eerie to see. Two other good performances I remember from the old Sadlers Wells touring company who thankfully kept these ballets alive were Margaret Barbieri as the Girl Lois Strike as the Gypsy Girl and David Ashmole as the Artist and Derek Purnell as Chief Gypsy

I will never forget seeing the genius of Ashton, when he once again, showcased The Royal Ballet with his beautiful 'Two Pidgeons.' Perhaps 1970s seems long ago, yet, his ballet remains fresh as then. Ann Jenner, Jennifer Penny, Keith Money and Monica Mason were all wonderful in those great days, Golden!

I remember meeting Sir Frederick at the ROH in the 70’s when this was danced, but I think the first time I saw Two Pigeons was at Sadlers Wells, also in the 70’s, it’s the only ballet that brings me to tears in the final scene 🥹

Ashton inspired so many dancers to live the roles he created rather than just dance The arms the head the expression the feet Every bit of the body right to the finger tips is called to interpret the role. This is so often where so many ballet dancers not familiar with the Ashton Style fail, it has to be embodied within and cannot be taught in just a few rehearsals !!! Yes the steps can but not the lyrical expressive style so important without which no matter how good the technician there is no Soul !!!

There are a few Royal Ballet performances on iTunes (La Bayadère from 2009 and Alice's Adventures in Wonderland from 2011, and from The Royal Opera Anna Nicole from 2011 and La traviata from 2009). We are looking at ways of expanding our online offering of complete performances, though, so do keep an eye on our social media channels for future updates.

Swan Lake was more dramatic in every aspect, specially the dying swan dance. This ballet, is also interesting on his own way. Lighter, and perhaps more fun and somehow modern. Not sure about the girl fight. Is not worthy!!! Hopefully the gypsy won't kill the pigeon. Therefore, congratulations to the choreographer for his vision and amazing work!

Matthew 10:16-20 Behold, I am sending you out as sheep in the midst of wolves, so be wise as serpents and innocent as doves. Beware of men, for they will deliver you over to courts and flog you in their synagogues, and you will be dragged before governors and kings for My sake, to bear witness before them and the Gentiles. When they deliver you over, do not be anxious how you are to speak or what you are to say, for what you are to say will be given to you in that hour. For it is not you who speak, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you.
