As an interpreter for American and Allied forces in eastern Afghanistan, Zalmay Niazy became a target of the Taliban - and applied for asylum in the U.S., where he'd settled among the cornfields of Iowa. But when immigration officials turned down his application, the townspeople of Iowa Falls fought back. Correspondent Lee Cowan reports.

The interpreters I had experience with in Afghanistan were true saviors and had a ton of combat experience with SOF. One night, prior to boarding a helicopter bound to a hostile area, our interpreter looked at me and said “two-hundred-nineteen.” I asked what he meant. “This is my 219th combat mission.”

@@tomaslopez2940 Bro we gave the afghani everything they needed to succeed. The afghan military ran, rather than fight, and they lost their country. We achieved our objective. But we funneled money into a country we didn't understand, tribal politics that are always on the brink of inflammation. Our boys did an amazing job, our military was unstoppable in that theater, the enemy was simply beaten into submission. But we couldn't stay forever, we expected after 20 years that the Afghani people would choose democracy, and they chose to FLEE like cowards and put their girls under the yoke of the Taliban, no respect from me.

Both were at the wrong place at the wrong time. The Vietnamese were Nationalists who wanted to adopt communism to their own needs, something the US did not particularly like at the time. The Vietnamese did not deserve this. Afghanistan housed Bin Laden who ordered the attack on the World Trade Centre. This time a bit more warranted, they should have pulled out after killing Bin Laden as the war lost all point to it afterwards. Years of unnecessary destruction. Years of occupying a country the US never understood. American tax dollars wasted on trying to rebuild a country with a unresolved civil war inflamed by other Muslim countries. The USSR could not change Afghanistan. The US could not do it either. The natives have all the time in the world to endure an occupation. Invaders do not.

Having served overseas in multiple conflict zones, men like Zee are the reason that we were able to sustain our wars as long as we did. Our interpreters often risked their own lives to help protect us. For example, when we were billeted with an untrustworthy Iraqi Army unit, our interpreter slept in their quarters so that he could warn us if he heard subversive talk. His warning was critical in making us ready when that IA unit staged a small mutiny and threatened to shoot us and desert. Because of his warning, we were able to have helicopter gunships already on standby and the mutineers stood down when an Apache hovered low on the compound, and when they realized that we were bunkered in the main house and ready to fight. I know many other troops from Iraq and Afghanistan have similar stories where interpreters saved the lives of American troops. Do not let politicians on either side brand these people as 'terrorists' or label them as 'helpless refugees'. Either is a disservice to them and a disgrace to our country. These are proud men that I am honored to have served alongside. They are more self-sufficient and brave than many native-born US citizens. They and their families deserve to be treated with the respect that they deserve. Those that we were able to evacuate from Afghanistan are as much heroes as our own troops that served there. In many ways, they are more so. While US troops rotated in and out of the warzones, our interpreters and allies were living there, risking and losing their family members to help us in our mission. I couldn't ask for a higher level of sacrifice and devotion to duty. These people should not be viewed as refugees or allies, they should be viewed as American heroes.

@@malamutmadre4930 I mean so did Russia, but they were smart and killed them off or sent them to labor camps after their work was done. Von Braun did some good science and from what I've read he only sided with Nazis to get funding for his rockets. Still not a morally correct move and shouldn't be celebrated in that sense but his mind was on the next level. I also heard he even got into some hot water with the gestapo and he was arrested for his careless remarks about the war and the v2.
