NOTE: I sold this truck a couple years ago, I don't have it anymore. Thanks for watching!
As it turns out, my turbo Toyota Pickup had more engine problems than just an oil leak.

It truly isn't the guide that is the issue. It is the fact that the Chain is getting a lot of stretch then it wipes out the plastic guides. The metal backed guides will indeed keep you from chewing up the timing cover but still not the real issue. You can upgrade to the LC engineering double row chain kit and you will have a lifetime chain. I just did this on my 1989 with 102000 original miles. Nice truck you have there!!

It is so great to see a young man working with his hands in the times we now live in, the knowledge and ability to be an american that rebuilds and repairs with willingness what almost everyone else would discard. Only one thing, the next oil change start using Amsoil motor oil and BG product called MOA and the Toyota will surly make it's 1,000,000 mile mark!

The old 20R motors used 2 timing chains as well as metal backed guides and they never failed. That's why they changed it to 1 chain and plastic guides. If the trucks never died then no one would buy new ones lol. Planned Obsolescence is real and it is everywhere!

I owned a 1987 EFI Torbo 4x4 "back in the day". I cried the day I hit some ice and totaled it. I thought of buying it back from the insurance company and fixing it up. I often kick myself for not doing it. I would love to still have that vehicle and be able to pass it down to my son some day. I absolutely loved that truck. It took me from Massachusetts to Alaska and back. Man, do I wish I still had it.

This thing is awesome. I remember watching my cousin do the exact same job on his when I was a kid back in the 90's. His was the same color and everything. It's nice to see these older cars/trucks escape harsh winters and road salt/chemicals. New cars and their features are nice. There's just something about driving a vehicle that's simple with little features.

Nice job. The tensioners went on my 1983 4 X 4 and I didn't replace anything other than the tensioners. It was so long ago I don't remember exaactly how I did it. I know I didn't follow the recommended procedure and did not pull the head. It ran until the frame rotted away. It was the first of a long run of Yota ownership. That truck was absolutely extraordinary in terms of dependability. I have one in my yard, with the newer 4 cylinder, that has 296,000 miles on it.

Beautiful truck, even that lower front lip isn't all mangled or missing, no rust on the bed seam, amazing!!! As for the a/c, if your a/c compressor is still good, it should be a pretty cheap fix. My old Lexus SC300 ran R12, it leaked out somewhere, my mechanic found the leaky line, replaced it, charged it with R134, works great. Was like a $200 fix too.

Dont use R134a. Its to hard for your compressor and condenser to use. It will make a load of head pressure and will really heat up your engine. Been there done that. Try a company called envirosafe, they make a r12 replacement for older systems.

@@crpth1 They make can taps that clamp around any standard aresol can that perice the side of the can and allow you to hook up HVAC hoses. Susbscribed to your channel because of your truck. You should remove the bed and sand a the frame a bit and apply chassis saver coating. Only thing I hate about these trucks are rusty frames. Usually front part of the frame is preserved from oil leaks and rear part by the wheel will rot. V6 version of the truck junk it's a underpowered V6 with headgasket issues.

Peter, I have an 86 Turbo SR5 xtra cab with 227000 miles. Who ever owned it before me put a lot of new parts into it. Unfortunately they put them on themselves and you can tell they weren't an experienced mechanic. They did replace the timing chain with a dual row set up. I have the same oil leak problem as you when I first bough the truck it would leave a puddle everywhere I parked it. I resealed the oil pan and replaced the rear main seal and all was good until I took a highway trip with it. Now it's blowing oil out of the dipstick tube Compression is good checking all of the forums it looks like a broken piston ring seems to be a common problem. I'm curious to see if your fix works. I really don't want to pull the engine but for my own piece of mind I need to see what the previous owner did or didn't do.

Since you can do your own work you saved thousands of dollars and headaches that this repair would have cost if you had to have some shop try to do this.
