A Rainy Ride Through Time: Slaidburn to Bentham
On a damp day, our motorcycle roared to life as we embarked on the ancient road from Slaidburn to Bentham. But here’s the twist-we veered left before reaching Bentham itself.
This road is a time traveler, whisking us back to medieval days. And at its pinnacle, perched 427 meters high, stands the enigmatic Cross of Greet. But wait, it’s not your typical cross-it’s a weathered stone with a square hole. Legends abound: some claim a cross once stood within that gap, while others believe it warded off diseases as travelers crossed into new territories.
Historically the stone marked the boundary between Yorkshire’s West Riding and Lancashire. In 1974, Slaidburn officially joined the Lancashire fold.
Rain or shine, this ride is an absolute gem. And when the sun graces the landscape, the scenery unfolds like a vivid painting. So saddle up, fellow adventurer, and let the wind carry you through time and beauty!

i did this ride myself last saturday as part of a day trip, and did it the opposite direction the week before, it's a great biking road, as is the one that runs parallel to it over bowland knotts. you can pick some great routes in the trough of bowland & lancs area, and even as a yorkshireman who's spiritual home is in the dales & NYM i don't mind saying that :) thanks for the vid.

@@2SpareTyres you say you are always looking for great roads to try, and i know loads in yorkshire, have done since i used to cycle them starting in the 70's, so where are you based and perhaps i could make a few suggestions to help, but don't wanna name too many you may already know lol, but as a sighter, have you tried the road from nateby just outside kirby stephen over to keld, you could then turn up to tan hill, grab a coffee in the pub, then take the road down to reeth, onto grinton and over the moor into redmire, back along to askrigg, over askrigg common onto muker, then back over the buttertubs pass to hawes, take the sedbergh road then turn down the mallerstang back to nateby. these are hardly secret roads lol, but if you've never been are fantastic, and there's so many in the locale, i never get bored of them as they are all pretty much traffic free and not too dissimilar to the slaidburn-betham road for width and scenery, i like to pootle along them listening to my fav sounds on a sunny day, hope we get one soon :) GL

Off to Wales tomorrow for a ride out 334 miles round trip. 👍
