The only thing I know is that if there is joint swelling, then this therapy is not the best option because heat is known to increase blood flow to an area which would actually promote swelling. I hope this helps! And I am not a physiotherapist :)

@@HamzaKhan-yn4ij Ultrasound therapy has non thermal effect too. We apply it over swollen area in pulse mode. In this mode Ultrasound generates very little to no heat. Ought to know, swelling has classifications. If swelling is due to inflammation, ultrasound would work. But, if the swelling is due to edema or effusion, ultrasound would have nothing to do.

@Sasmita Samal Not at all.. unless one holds the ultrasound probe in one place constantly at least for 5 to 6 seconds. Despite that you won't feel pain if you have enough muscle mass where the probe is held constantly.

There is little to no peer reviewed evidence that ultrasound treatment modality is effective in healing injuries

Icing and ultrasound therapy, both are useful for pain relief and to reduce inflammation. However, the working processes are different. The video is only talking about the thermal effect of ultrasound. But the therapy has a non thermal effect too. • We use ultrasound therapy (UST) in continuous mode (the thermal effect) to reduce pain. It increases bloodflow to the pain or tender area. Increased blood circulation flushes out the chemical mediators which causes the pain. • We use UST in PULSE MODE (the non thermal effect) to reduce inflammation. In this mode the soundwave penetration gets paused and resumed alternatively that dosen't allow heat generation over the treatment area. • Icing works better in acute conditions and gives a fast relief in either case, pain relief and reduce inflammation. Icing restricts bloodflow to the treatment area by constricting vessels. Thus reduces inflammation. Besides, it temporarily reduce sensory nerve activity thus pain feels less or no pain at all. But as I said, this works best in acute condition and for minor injuries. For chronic condition & relatively more severe injury, ULTRASOUND THERAPY works better in long run. Ought to know, icing may reduce inflammation & pain sensation but it dosen't promot healing. Besides, its not good to take for a longer period of time as reduced blood flow won't let the nutrients to reach therefore healing would be interrupted. On the other hand, UST may not act that fast as icing does but UST promotes tissue healing by supplying adequate nutrients by increasing bloodflow.
