The AAV Landing Vehicle, also known as the Amphibious Assault Vehicle or the AAV-P7/A1, has been a vital component of the United States Marine Corps since its introduction in the 1970s. The AAV is designed to transport troops and cargo from ship to shore, making it an indispensable tool for amphibious assaults and other maritime operations.
It has a combat weight of 29 tons (26.3 metric tons) and can transport up to 21 combat-equipped Marines in addition to its three-person crew. The vehicle's armor is composed of a welded aluminum hull that provides protection against small arms fire, artillery shell fragments, and other battlefield threats.
This vehicle is powered by a Cummins VT-400 diesel engine, which generates 525 horsepower and allows it to reach a top speed of 45 miles per hour (72 kilometers per hour) on land and 8.2 miles per hour (13.2 kilometers per hour) in water.
The Amphibious Combat Vehicle (ACV) is set to replace the AAV as the primary amphibious assault vehicle for the United States Marine Corps. The ACV is designed to offer several improvements over the AAV, addressing the need for modernization as the AAV has been in service since the 1970s and, despite several upgrades over the years, is becoming increasingly outdated.

Did you or any other Marines experience sea sickness when you were on the water?

@@csimw2330Really depends on the seastate. Some grunts do on troop transfers, some piss themselves, some pass out, some are fine. I'm not too big on being a rear crewman myself. There's a difference from sitting in the driver station, tc, and turret vs hatches closed with 21 people

I drove one from 77. 80. Good times bad times I’ve been on a lot of floats. Some of the best days of my life. Now that I look back ✌️

@wayneleveille2472 Well dude, not much has changed besides the dual support roller and the radios. They're not as fun as they were back in your day, they're more so a liability nowadays. The last new replacement parts were made in 1999, everything is junk. The leadership is Trash. It's just not an mos I can recommend getting into these days. I tell people never ever ever pick combat support, just wait for an 03. Not so much fun when you have to stay in the field longer because the entire company is broken and don't have enough tracks for tow, and have to have parts ordered directly to the field. Not to nitpick too much but they only have a crew of 3. Crewcheif/gunner, driver, rear crewman.

As I remember, we used to get about 12- 14 fully loaded grunts in one of these by the time you pack in the weapons, ALICE packs and all. I guess if you hang all of the packs on the outside, then maybe 21 but that's a big ole sardine can right there. It sure was scary coming off the back of the LST, when that thing dips down in the surf your heart kinda skips a beat until you pop back up. Those poor souls off the coast of CA a couple years ago didn't pop back up.

12-14 was realistic with gear. When I first got into the MOS in 79 they used to say it would hold 21 combat equipped Marines. The only time I ever saw a P-7 actually hold that many Marines was when we did a joint exercise in the Philippines. 21 combat equipped Philippine Marines fit into a P-7 with room to spare!

Yeah, maybe 21 guys with a rifle and not much else. I am sure that number is from the original RFP which means the respondent contractor would stack guys on top of each other if that is how they can meet a technical specification for their proposal and bid.

I was in from 99 to 2012, I hated riding in them as over land troop carriers, hitting IEDs they didn't hold up so well.

I couldn't find a video on youtube showing what its like inside an AAV when it leaves the ships bay and when it lands on a beach. Also i couldnt't find a video that explains how do they stay afloat.

Should transfer some to Ukraine since we are retiring them these would be perfect to cross all the rivers and now flooded terrain they have to cross.

We ultimately pulled them out of Iraq because they're extremely vulnerable to IEDs and/or mines. They wouldn't fare well in Ukraine.

@@SgtJintothe armour isn’t very good in general and in water they are a very hostile environment to the people inside . The inside isn’t well sealed against fumes and pretty much if it goes down in water , only the driver can get out quickly.

They didn't hold up real well against IEDs, saw alot of Marines lost in them. We lost eight in the Battle of Nasiryah Iraq in 2003 due to mortar, arty and RPGs. In 2005 the Reserve unit with us lost 15 Marines from an IED in Hiditha, I wss never real comfortable riding in them
