my great uncle Hugh Dinwiddy OBE captained a D-Day landing craft on the 6th of June. It was loaded with five Amphibious Sherman tanks. Hugh was ORDERED to proceed despite force five winds and his radio protests... ALL of the tank crews drowned as their vehicles were swamped by the rough seas. He was told to get in do his job and get out - OTHERS were waiting to be landed . . .

Uncle Hugh did his job on D-Day and returned to civilian life... he died of old age before truly and freely speaking of the terrors he had witnessed...

Once had the 'Joy' of making an assault in an AAV-7 from the welldeck to the LST-1194 USS La Moore County. When you first come out of the ship and hit the water the vehicle (usually just referred to as a track) usually bob under water for a second of two like a cork. Since the seals on the troop compartment cargo hatches are rarely 100% effective at sealing said hatches everyone in the troop compartment gets a shower rather they need one or not. The ride ashore is interesting with the drunken swaying, until the sudden bump of the tracks hitting bottom at the beach. Then its up the beach for the fun in the sun for the assault. Had to love being a US Marine!

I served on two Gators; USS Whidbey Island LSD 41 1993-96 and USS Wasp LHD 1 2000-03. Had my first experience with Amphibious landings in 1993 while deployed for UNITAS 34-93 to South America and West Africa. Had the opportunity to ride on an LCAC in 2002 while returning from deployment to the Mediterranean.

I was with 3/2 and did a med cruise on the Wasp in 98. Definitely some great memories, at least the parts that I can remember lol. Just like most young Marines, the first thing I did as soon as we got to port was to start drinking. It was fun for sure but looking back I wish that I would have at least tried to check out some historical places and that sort of thing instead of drinking my ass of and trying to hook up with the local ladies or the Navy girls. Then come to find out later in the deployment the Navy had a prostitution ring on the ship. Plus over half of the females ended up pregnant while under way also. Lol good times.

American gentlemen, remember clearly: the war of the past and the war of today are no longer the same: if you land en mass with boats on a country's beach, missiles will rain down on your heads; it's no longer like before, to fire at soldiers who arrive with Kalashnikovs and grenades

First, missiles are expensive. Second, the environment might not be optimal for missiles( lots of obstacles or maybe a cliff or something). Third, they don’t have to be directly into enemy fire, they could land somewhere more secret or unexpected.

I assume if our troops are invading a beach head, the surrounding area will already have been saturated with our own firepower.

@@samdherring Gentlemen, that's not how you make a war, because a saturated zone with troops is a good opportunity for the enemy to devastate your soldiers, and you can use this method simply in countries that are poor, weak in armaments.

Another WWII assault that was just as bad...or worse the Omaha Beach, but on a smaller scale, was Tarawa in the Pacific , November, 1943. The 2nd Marine Marine Division was forced to wade ashore on a chest-deep coral reef was from 500 yards out. Also, wouldn't that big, lumbering LCAC be a prime target for enemy artillery? Just askin'...

surprised you especially didn't catch them using overlord as the code name for the name for the landings in normandy when I believe that was for the invasion of europe overall and neptune was for the normandy landings.

For the point about the LCAC being targets for artillery. Their wouldn’t or at least shouldn’t be artillery near the landing zone before hand. I’m pretty sure that the US Marines doctrine recognizes that a contested landing zone would be nearly impossible to land in with large craft and that any landing zone would need to be rendered safe by naval and air strikes.

They looked pretty well prepared > even with war paint on. If i was the commander >The 1st thing to hit the beaches is? DRONES! 2nd Robic Machine Guns. Then troops and things. Making it safe for troops to arrive, and back ups

Pretty good video. It’s amazing that 🇺🇸 has these capabilities. Just the well deck of a navy ship, is great. Driving tanks in and out of a slightly flooded boat, then clear water from well deck after tanks are parked.

My "favorite" part of riding in an AAV is diesel fumes and exhaust. I'd use a gas mask BUT they don't do a thing against them.

Friend, I believe you meant to say that 'Operation Overlord ' was a ' famous ' example of an amphibious landing as, in reality , it marked the beginning of the end for Nazi Germany.

Good point friend! '42 - 43 ', certainly marked the end of Nazi conquest in the East, but without Sicily and Normandy, I don't believe it was definitive in leading to Germany's defeat. There may be to many ' what ifs ' to know for sure how that early defeat would have led to.

The tracked AAV-7 (originally LVTP-7) is currently being retired as there is an 8-wheeled Advanced Amphibious Assault Vehicle being fielded to replace it.

@@Jason-7212 Sorry the ACV (Amphibious Combat Vehicle) is NOT a replacement for the AAV (Amphibious Assault Vehicle) just a supplement with better land mobility. There is current a program underway to create a modified ACV, the ACV 1.2, which eill replace the AAV ... maybe.

In my time in the USMC we were told to get off the beach as soon as we could! If you've got to wade in through knee-deep or higher water it will kick your butt! You will be exhausted.

I would expect landing craft to drop their ramps on the beach, not in knee deep water.

That's not always possible. Depends on the slope of the beach, tides, weight of load, whether you are onloading or offloading, etc. We always got a kick out of watching the Marines gun their engines when their Humvee's submerged up onto the windows when we couldn't give them a dry ramp. In all fairness, that had to be unsettling. Loved my time at Assault Craft Unit 1 on Coronado back in the '80's. LCU-1652 was my boat. Great video!

One design I reckon they need is to have rollers inbuilt at the bow, just under the ramp so as to stop that sudden jerk when hitting the shore...unless they already do and I have no idea lol. 🤷

The D-Day amphibious invasion and establishment of a secure foothold, was code-named "Operation Neptune", whereas "Operation Overlord" started once the landings were a success and established a lodgement had occurred.

@@Ben942K While I'm not 100% certain myself, I'm guessing he's talking about air superiority and bombing the hell out of defenses being the first priority now. We don't have to risk that level of casualties anymore, with the West's modern aircraft and missiles.

@@altergreenhorn it too looks like those countries did not set up coastal defenses, requiring a beach landing. I don't think the tactic has been abandoned if we have equipment for the purpose of a landing. When a situation causes for it surely a landing would be considered.

its good to invent great modern techmachines, but what about usage? look around you your seas have no enemies for you never has never shall be but in arsenal lobbies bundwith khujli, wants to create that boyzzz playthings then sell them where they first bring conflicts so products can be used sold... usa coast has no enemies as such after world war 2 entire europe learnt its lesson.. japan's attack was not that heinous to what usa did to them still japan in its quiet dignity went ahead to rebuild themsleves first and how its worth seeing their growth and progress while captain america in its delusional paranoia went on attack after attack on others from veitnam iraq afghnistan and others why? its cost you billions, your own man power families berieved never healing form loved ones losses, and destruction to others and conclusion/ every "fuddu idiot came into hidden dictatorship facade as smokescreen perhaps hiding the real cause of all of it behind... could be anything... huge cache of budgets vanish in names of wars and expenditures, so create your playzeug but rmemeber to use it for peace and help not destruction like it has been till now...
