Many artists are associated with a specific instrument. Bruce Springsteen is almost always seen playing a Fender Telecaster. But his most famous guitar, the one on the cover of "Born To Run", is actually a Fender Esquire. Get an up close look at the guitar here from The Metropolitan Museum of Art's exhibit "Play It Loud".

Bruce tried guitars all over New Jersey and some in NYC before picking this one (made in 1953 or 1954 ) for $185 in 1972 or 1973 depending on the source (equivalent to almost $1,200 today). Since then he has had several exact copies made. I believe he keeps the very first one at home (sometimes on display in museums) and plays the copies on tour. They probably sound slightly different to him but to no one else. Phil Petilo was the man who sold it to him and kept in working for years. There's even a famous bootleg of a 1978 live radio broadcast concert where Bruce mentions him by name and thanks him for all his work repairing the guitar during tours- pulling all nighters to repair it between concerts.

Actually that's a 1957 Esquire! The logo on the headstock didn't appear where it is until that year. This guitar was routed out under the pickguard for multiple pickups and has been bastardised throughout the years. It's not original so the neck and body might not even be from the same guitar!

@@solarismoon3046 The neck and body are from different brands. Among other customizations it's a Telecaster body and an Esquire neck. He refers to it as a "mutt".

@@kindnessfirst9670 Right but these are both Fender guitar parts - just different models (name) but same guitar altogether. He calls it a mutt because it's been pieced together after going though the ringer! 🤣

DAMN! I wish I could've seen him more than 250 times! He made me want to play guitar too. It's the reason why I now own three Telecaster guitars. Only one Esquire. This man is a legend in his own time. There will never be another and I'm glad that I got to know his music and the legend that he is!

250 times, you must be doing ok with money. I couldn't afford to see him once. Love Thunder Road, and Darkness on the Edge of Town. A true talent. That guitar is really nice too. Being famous must not be an easy path sometimes, even though it seems like it would be.

Thanks for watching and for commenting. To be clear, those more than 250 shows has been over close to 40 years. It started in my teens. Plus living close to New Jersey there was always multiple shows each tour to be able to catch him close to home. I agree about the price of fame.

@joerock7505

First, thanks for watching and for commenting. Second I first saw him live in 1984. In fact I saw him all 10 of the shows he did during a stand at Brendan Byrne Arena in New Jersey that summer. That was 10 shows that summer alone. Having many friends who are also huge fans, people would often call me if they had an extra ticket. Most times when Bruce played either New York or New Jersey I'd see all the shows in the stand. That's how in close to 40 years I've seen over 250 shows. Plus I've gone to see him in other states as well. I'd have to really go back and look to see what year was the most shows I've seen.

I’ve always wanted to do the exact opposite. I would like to take a Tele and use a hidden neck pickup where it has the simpler look of the Esquire. I seen recently where Fender is making one as a Brad Paisley signature Esquire with a hidden neck pickup but I’ve been wanting to do this long before it came out. I just haven’t found a pickup I like the sound of set that low.

@@277southtombob You should talk to a lawyer and have them contact fender and let them know this was your Idea 1'st. Maybe they can at the least give you some sort of credit for your Idea. Don't never know what could come out of it ? Would be worth a try.

@@keithclark486 I’m far from the first. I’ve seen p90s, humbuckers and all types of pickups under pick guards and none of them seemed to have any better luck than me balancing them. It was actually Seymour Duncan that designed the Secret Agent pickup that with balance that far away from the strings. Lots of people love the clean look of a Esquire but miss the versatility of a Tele.

Thanks for watching and for commenting. I believe the entire thing is Esquire. If I remember correctly it says "Esquire" under "Fender" on the headstock. I'm surprised now looking back, that we didn't capture a shot of the headstock. But that is my best recollection.

Every Esquire I’ve ever seen with the pick guard removed still had the front pickup route in the body. Basically the Esquire and Telecaster were identical except they didn’t install the neck pickup and used a pick guard without the hole for a pickup in it. They even had the pickup selector switch but it was wired normal/bypass the tone control/through a tone capacitor like fully engaged tone control.

The esquire neck looks longer than a standard tele it’s baritone like in length allows detuning with ease and thick strings

It isn't "baritone like in length". The scale length on an Esquire is 25.5" just like a Telecaster. That's why you can stick an Esquire neck on a Tele (or the reverse) and still have the intonation be right.

250 wow I just got to like over 105 Aerosmith's shows in 2019 before the world went haywire but I was able to bring my 11 year-old son to see the greatest American rock band Next to of course the Boss. Well I think in my humble opinion is probably the most prolific songwriter in American history. But I still like Aerosmith Anyway that's awesome dude awesome guitar thanks for showing a song That peace of history keep up the good work peace.
