‘This is certainly the most challenging, complex but also rewarding project that I have ever worked on.’
More than 40 metres below Swanston Street, Melbourne’s deepest train station is coming together.
With architectural fittings being installed and test trains running behind the platform screen doors, we’re getting closer to the finish line at State Library Station.

Most lines will have the capacity for 10 min headways after the Metro tunnel's completion.

I think only Hurstbridge and Mernda have a proper bottleneck (the tracks between Clifton hill and just after Jollimont) limiting capacity once this is complete.

Loving the European looking underground, and the station glass sliding doors are fab. Now, get the airport rail and a decent fast train to Geelong, and services 24 hours; including to major regional hubs… railways are the best way to move people efficiently and effectively, but we need this level of infrastructure to be ongoing. And Underground railways connecting the mid point and outer ends of the ‘spokes’ of trains from Melbourne cbd…. We can have a world class railway system.

Sydney's rail system is so much more interlinked than melbourne.. and they are building more rail. Melbourne is just getting a few extra stations in the cbd and near by area. Most of the shopping centres in melb arent even connected by rail.

@@mjcats2011Melbourne does have the capacity for more circumferential service. The old inner and outer loops, along with the western rail freight loop, if reopened, could provide better circumferential. capacity.

I want them to make a video with this positive and uplifting vibe explaining exactly why they thought it would be good for the population to cancel the rail link and suburban rail loop projects.

they haven't cancelled either project. not sure what you're on about. the airport rail link was suspended for a 90-day review, along with a whole lot of other infrastructure projects, but it's one of the projects more likely to survive.

Apparently the review has been going on more than 120 days now and not close to being completed.

Maybe so, but there's no point continuing construction until the review is finished. Otherwise, if it is cancelled, that's a lot of money wasted. They're not using any more resources until they know they'll be able to deliver it.@@JimmiAlli

Besides, Infrastructure Australia is conducting the review - it's out of the state government's hands. Unless they decided to go ahead without any federal support, which would be utterly stupid.@@JimmiAlli

update: the review is complete and funding commitments for the airport link are reaffirmed. on track for opening in 2029.

It's more a political slogan based on the original government estimates prior to tendering the project. They're not a year ahead of the construction schedule, it's all running on a very tight schedule in actuality.

I use public transport daily, a 1 hour to 1.5 hour journey twice per day, to and from work. All of these new stations which really go nowhere of any use to anyone are useless to me and a huge waste of tax payer money that has contributed to Victoria now being in over 100 billion dollars of debt.

If you knew anything about transport systems you’d know that this project is hugely beneficial to the entire network and essential for Melbourne moving into the future.

I’m sure you’ve never once complained when they add “one more lane” to a motorway. It’s kind of like that except it will actually increase commuter capacity, unlike adding lanes which just fill up with more cars.

the metro tunnel isnt being built for the 5 new stations its being built to add extra capacity onto the exisitng train network particularly in melbourne's west, Besides if they really only cared about stations they wouldve built them in areas with poor public transport coverage not in areas with high frequency trams and existing stations

@@martinschalken7583 How will it benefit? By sending a train line to domain interchange to dump hundreds of people into trans during peak hour on st Kilda road? Yes, sorry only someone like you could see the benefit of that. Tell me more seeing you claim I know nothing.

@@zaraustra it adds more capacity to the train network by rerouting the busiest line in the east and the busiest line the west from the rest of the train network, it also means that theres room to open several branches which weren't viable to build due to capacity restraints including to the airport. clearly you do know nothing if you think its just "a train line to domain interchange to dump hundreds of people into trans during peak hour on st Kilda road"
