Travelers aren't complaining about layovers at Singapore's Changi Airport (consistently ranked the best in the world) thanks to its movie theaters, rooftop pool, hot tub, and butterfly garden. Yet in the United States, there isn't an airport within the Top 30 of the World's Best Airports. Kris Van Cleave looks at efforts to update America's air terminals in such major cities as Los Angeles, Chicago and Salt Lake City, and talks with New York Governor Andrew Cuomo about his ambitious, multi-billion-dollar effort to modernize New York City's notoriously antiquated LaGuardia Airport.

As some one from Singapore I'd say Changi Airport is great though with still some small areas for improvement. For instance Terminals 1-3 have their bus stops in the basement & they aren't climate-controlled, so they're quite noisy and stuffy. Also the departure airside entrance at Terminals 1 & 2 are rather low & feel enclosed

I know it's a bad habit we need to break but MOST of us Americans usually wait for something to break before we renovate, build a new modern version or something bigger and brand new. We believe that building new is less expensive than repeatedly repairing something that already has an old infrastructure and is doomed to break again but that belief is changing and usually the US goes big when changing its infrastructure we are a first world country so we have no choice but to keep up. We are building new roads, airports, housing development, office space, skyscrapers etc. And Hyperloop and high speed rail is finally in development, We keep up with our stuff. Just not in the way other countries want us to. But we are getting better. Go 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

"Everyome else is passing us by." Keywords there. The USA has been behind the times on transportation/infrastucture innovation for years. One of the many reasons could be that investing in such projects don't really benefit the wealthy, so us "common people" get stuck with aging and obsolete means of transportation.

That’s not true; the wealthy make money off of us. Why NOT have a good airport? They want it just as bad. It’s just not worth investing in because we’ve gotten so behind on infrastructure after overworking steel, starting in the 50s. Thus a lot of big city infrastructure is outdated. There’s different policies that can change this, and no one solution is perfect, but it’s about what will incentivize is to invest in an airport as much as is invested in houses or cars, which the American public eats up. Houses and cars, after all, is where lost of the savings are. Why spend on something that isn’t part of your customer’s savings, and therefore, their consumption? You won’t.

Most facilities and events in the U.S. are institutional and barren. They maximize competition and efficiency at the expense of grace, charm and kindness. From our best airports to our premier dog show, our public life smacks of isolation and loneliness. Compare our Purina dog show with Cruft’s in the U.K. It’s extremely hard to project a lack of cameraderie when you have dogs, but somehow we do it, in contrast to Cruft’s which fosters enthusiastic, doggy joy. Could we please make some changes in our priorities to put the fun back in functional?

I actually wrote about this the other day: if you ever find yourself getting lonely, get online and make a bunch of social media pages on sites like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram and reach out to people that you know, and to people that have similar interest and you’ll start making all sorts of friends. Community events too are fantastic to partake in as well! Blessings to you and anyone that ever suffers from loneliness, but I promise you better days are ahead always. Keep reaching out to people, start making those connections, and watch them flourish.

This money could be put to better use for improving NY schools, healthcare, poverty, etc., but, if they're going to invest it in air travel, improving the appeal of one airport is the wrong move. I'm sure it will look incredible, provide the latest in modern conveniences, likely increase airport traffic/revenue, provide more jobs to local residents, and, of course, meet their goal of America competing with other airports around the world. As an expat who flies in and out of Changi and who has recently gone through Newark Liberty, all I can say is that people who use that airport have my sympathy. It’s not so much the airport which is a bit tatty but was perfectly ok....it was the staff. Doesn’t matter how much you spend on an airport, if the people at immigration and security treat you like a piece of filth who is getting in the way of a conversation with their co-workers, it’s not going to leave a good impression.

Also those airports function as hubs for people to transfer to another flight to get to their final destination (anyone traveling to Bali or Thailand from America would know this) so there's an incentive to make those airports luxurious for those who have a couple of hours layover. Here in America we're blessed at least we can catch a flight to almost anywhere in the globe from the nearest major city instead of having to transfer from SFO, LAX or JFK only.

MSP is one of the best airports in the US, no doubt. I miss flying out of there. I live in Denver now and despite consistently ranking highly, DEN is pretty annoying. Being one of the farthest airports from downtown means it’s inconvenient to get to. The terminals are too narrow for peak traffic times and there’s no way to get to all the terminals under your own power. You’re forced to cram into a train that is *always* completely packed. There are almost no stairs anywhere, only 1 escalator up and down wherever you go, meaning you’re always stuck behind people with giant suitcases. CVG on the other hand has a walkway that parallels the train as well as multiple escalators up and down. A much less stressful experience than being a sardine until you get to your gate.

@Patrickvegas ...by that token Minneapolis should be worse, yet Delta has a major operation there. Then there's Detroit with a different form of "undesirable climate", yet they too are a major hub and gateway for Delta, while many residents there are too poor to travel. I'm referring of a secondary hub/gateway (like it was for Midwest and Northwest) as well as a possible 3rd Chicago region airport, (like Baltimore is to Washington DC). Furthermore with how climate change is going, those harsh winters may become a thing of the past. Look at this year, no snow and mid 50s for the holidays (evne broke a couple daily records). Crikey, it was warmer there than here in Portland (which is usually the opposite situation).

While there is an absolute need for U.S. airport infrastructure to be updated, it should be pointed out that the U.S. airline and airport system is vastly larger and vastly DIFFERENT than virtually anyplace else in the world. Our airports are largely built to support DOMESTIC business and leisure traffic, where there is much more competition and margins are thin. This is in contrast to most airports in the world whose service is largely INTERNATIONAL where the frequency/traffic is fundamentally different, and the cost points and margins are higher. This difference impacts both our airlines and airports in virtually the exact same way. In other words, it’s much easier for Singapore airport and Singapore Airlines to be the worlds best when absolutely every flight is international...it’s also basically that countries ONLY airport (of consequence).

Some of them, like the universities after the 19th century, are were designed with an anti-protest and mass-controlling notion. Denver's airport was pretty good until they chose to remodel something that didn't need to be remodeled, resulting in everything being unsightly and under construction.

The biggest problem with LaGuardia is the two crossing runways causing serious delays almost daily. If it’s windy they go down to one runway.

this is true. The one by me definantly needs updating. I dread going to the airport. It's crowded, cramped, and kinda dated. The planes are cramped too which I don't look forward to. I don't think that will ever change with plane travel with Economy anyway. With older airports, they're not built to hold as many people as it currently does today plus like many airports, it was built pre-9-11, which was a very different time security wise. The one by me in Salt Lake City is getting reconstructed though and will be opening before the end of 2020.
