I'm a bit late, but snakes actually have poor eyesight compared to other reptiles. They can make out shapes, but not details in many cases. Their eyesight is quite different to ours. Snakes rely on seeing body heat to see what's alive around themAlso, snakes don't hear the same way that humans do. They can't hear as sensitively as we can. Human breathing is roughly between 850 and 1,600 Hz. Snakes can only detect 50 and 1,000 hertz in terms of what they can hear. They also rely on their tongue the same way a human relies on their sense of smell. Their tongue takes in the environment, so if a snake is sticking out its tongue, it's trying to get a better sense of its environment. I probably don't have to say it since you guys can figure it out form here. The mud makes it hard to see the girl's body heat, and if the mud is doing enough job covering up her scent, then the snake would only smell the mud on her. And if the girl's breathing was in the right sound range, it could be in a way that the snake cannot process. It clearly does still sense her, but it cannot make out where she is. Once she sat still with the mud covering her, the snake could no longer tell if she was there. The snake may have thought she went into the tree or something. It definitely was confused. Of course, this is in the context of this snake being like normal snakes. We don't know if these snakes are the same or if they have different senses to us in the context of the movie.
