We weren't going to let them take that away from us! Because to evaluate instruments only out of pure nostalgia and faded memory is not our style.
Therefore, it was obvious that we had to measure our Behringer RD-9 against a real Roland TR-909!
To make it exciting, we left the sound question open until the end. If you feel like a little blind test, you are cordially invited to play along!
For the sound recording, we did not use compressors or a limiter. All drumcomputer sounds are dry and normalized.

i find this now after 1 year since you made it, great job: when we developed the RD9 we chased the sound a lot and it can get silly trying to find 100%, we chose the current pitches as they matched the mules we used closest and we have to choose something at some point - as you guys know, you could get 3 x 909 in that room and hear the differences - this is what we found and we used several mules with users and owners across several continents inc. new nava - you take a handful of machines and you pick the middle - this is all you can do when cloning the RD9 is a great modern take for very small cost - indi outs are what i always advise people if they desire to be as close as possible - when we route the channels into the WD and VCF we undoubtedly add more VCA - this alters the sounds a bit at the main even if the circuits are turned off. i love the humour and the entire video - i never saw this channel before, i now subscribe happily for fun

Apparently there is a 7 khz low-pass filter to filter out digital noise from the processor board on the main output which the RD9 doesn't have. That is why the RD9 sounds a bit more "punchy" and clearer especially in the highs. When using the individual outputs that filter is bypassed and they sound much more identical. I have listened to several comparison video's and testing it blind each time I like the original sound more, it sounds smoother and more "buttery" to my ears (due to said filter on the main output). As I am typing this I am ordering a RD9, it's an excellent high quality slightly improved clone and for it's pricepoint it's unmatched. Behringer really nailed it imo with the RD9!

Great video! My RD-9 finally arrived last week. Having owned 2 TR-909's over the years I have to say the RD-9 is the closest alternative to the original I've ever heard, and for the cost it's an absolute must have.

I was basically raised on the 909 sound and groove. For like 25 years, subconsciously I guess. When making music, I always used samples - wellmade samples. I have never used the real thing in all those years. Not even touched one. Then while attending a Reinier Zonneveld show, it kinda struck me like lightning. THAT's what I need/love/want. So I found a unit in good shape, price was as usual two years ago; pretty high. I bought it. I remember asking myself "is this really worth it? SO much money for just drums?", but those thoughts never crossed my mind after I started using the 909. Love, appreciation and relief took over, I never thought about the money. Which is not gone by any means. And prices still went up a notch from there. It feels great, I immediately get the result I want. It really is my religion now. The temple of the 909 😀 And that inner search is over. Forever. IF I was on the course of buying a 909 NOW and I needed to save money, I'd go for a Steda SR-909 or a RE--909, that B-thing is not what I like. To be clear, I have a regular job, living a normal life with normal expenses and whatnot. That 909 was a major purchase, the most expensive gear purchase I ever did. Would I do that again? Yes, a 100% yes. It depends what's important to you. I don't have much other gear, unlike today's zeitgeist aka cramping much cheap gear into small home studios. I very carefully selected the gear and use it to its fullest. Learn all functions, study the manuals extensively and keep redundancy low. The RD-9 sound okay, especially when you take its price into consideration. What I try to keep out, since it's music, not economics. Especially when you're an amateur like myself. Look up the real meaning af the word "amateur" ;-) I am not in this for money, fame or recognition. So yes, to a small percentage, buying a real 909 is still relevant. In my opinion these vintage devices are very solid and they imnmediately "deliver". Unagitated, relaxed, but also smooth and relaxed and PUNCHY at the same time. --- Fun fact; a year after my findings/experiences with the 909, I pulled the trigger on the 808. Same result. Here, the differences with the RD-8 are even clearer. Lightyears to be honest. The 808 is my love affair, the 909 is my religion. Both are equally awesome! Cheers and thanks for all the entertaining content 👍

When you compare them the RD-9 has that brighter sound like 606 hi-hats have. But you might be able to compare two 909s and see significant differences, too.

To me it sounds like nothing more than a question of how to place them in a mix. The TR-909 needs some sparkle and edge while the RD-9 needs some soothing. Sure there's some differences in pitch but that's something you can adjust in your DAW depending on what the project needs. I tried to buy a TR-909 but got defrauded on eBay for 2500 EUR so forget about vintage, I'm done with it... Welcome RD-9!

Thats a good summary! Actually the TR-909 in our Video was sold for 5000 Euro a few weeks after we made the videos. Unfortunately it was not ours! Behringer does really a good job. And those things are working when they are released! This is defintely not the case with all the synths from european or US manufacturers. This is a subject we will definitely have to discuss in further videos! 🍀

Tr-909 Kick has more 'saturation' effect so it sounds like more meaty bottom end. The 909 individual sounds meld bit better together and are bit warmer. Rd-9 sounds bit more direct and colder. I think they did outstanding job considering the price and pure analog art recreation.

Your 909 is even darker than mine, making the difference even larger. But that's fixable by putting a 6db filter to lower the right end on the RD-9, and they will sound nearly identical.

Now and then, I use my samples of the 909 and of the RD-9. As I didn't name them correctly, I can't tell you the difference anymore! And of course in production on the kick I will add some distortion, a compressor and of course an EQ. Then it becomes even harder to tell. 😁

@winesynths Check my video on the topic. The 909 had a 7db lopass filter on the outputs. Once you know that it's easier to tell the difference. Although the kick is still hard. But you are absolutely right, with so.e effects and it makes no difference.

I was super surprised at how huge the difference is, especially in the funk of the hats and claps. As there is so much Rave about how close it is I was rather disappointment, super easy to recognize cmon. One has a driving funk we all love, the other is kind of sluggish not a backbone for track. Thanks for the Video. Its like to compare Apples with Oranges, but both are tasting good right? if you want the sound of an original 909…get an original. How simple is that? For me its not only about the „Sound“ its how you operate and how you dive in into the whole World of the 909 Experience. Its about the 100th little interactions on the 909, the programming and the little mistakes. Its still the King of all Drummachines (the 808 is still the Queen of all time) Don’t fool yourself….with the RD9 its not there. Just my humble Opinion ☺️

when we developed the RD9 (yes i am one of the team) our 909 mules included a brand new nava too, each 909 sounded different and it is only apparent to people when we combine several into one place through the same chain, not many people get this luxury - the differences are there but very small so far as it is silly to keep chasing especially when each other 909 can be different at times - the RD9 is in all respects a 909 with benefits - cost being one ;-)

From the beginning of the sound test right away I can hear the bass drum does not go as deep as a 909. The snare drum is short and off pitch. There was a reason Roland made those drum sound like that because you can clearly cut through the mix. There is also no way possible you can make a $1,195 drum machine from 1985 for only $300 dollars.😂
