I got the same conclusion you had a few years ago and started to buy analog equipment every time I saw a good opportunity. I ran into a Yamaha RM-800-24 Inline recording mixer and have a few racks full of equipment. I only do high pass filtering in the box. Everything else is hardware.

I find the digital audio world, especially plugins and updates to be frustrating. It seems we have to buy our gear again every few years so it will work with our Macs etc. analog gear is a much better investment and it is starting to look like the digital audio software industry is more of a scam than anything. Many plugins do the exact same thing but have different window dressing and marketing. I find i can do more with analog and it sounds better. It's also less frustrating and doesn't break my creative flow as much.

@@jeetmix1986 I get good results with less expensive analog gear. Some plugins do work very well but I prefer less expensive analog gear. A lot of mine was more expensive when it was new. They just aren't the famous models everyone talks about which is why the value goes down. They still work very well for me and give me a unique sound. I like plugins but the cost, updates, and digital hassles are not good. My analog gear will always do what it was designed to do without any software updates. Also, we cannot own a plugin. We can only own the right to use it until we need to pay for a new version. DAWless recording is gaining attention again but I don't think I will go that far. I like the power of the DAW and the sound of analog.

Can i use the Soundcraft GB2 32 console for a hybrid studio, i have a RME digiface usb and 4 Behringer ADA 8200 on order, is it possible to use the cosole to send and return signals from each chanel to the ADA 8200 and use outboard gear, best regards Patrick from Sweden
@TwinCreekAudio
@TwinCreekAudio 2 ай бұрын
Yes, it is definitely possible to use that console. The best way is to send the direct outs to audio interface inputs and audio interface outputs to line inputs. It is best to use separate channels for recording to the interface and others to return the signal from the interface for hybrid mixing but you can get around that by repatching between recording and mixing. The GB was designed for live sound but with 32 channels you can use at least 8 for monitoring channels while tracking up to 24 channels simultaneously. There is a lot of flexibility with a system like that, even when using a console designed for something other than recording. Make sure to check out my video. How to set up for mixing on an analog console and how to record tracks with an analog console. I will copy and paste the link below. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/p6uampqZns-zoXk.htmlsi=fbUITsEkVxyq_pbr kzfaq.info/get/bejne/iL2dq86Al83Sf6c.htmlsi=-FbH6YCoVTygh52- Thanks for your question. I have a Ramsa wr-s4416. Im trying to send interface tracks out into line input then out back into daw on aingle audio tracks. Qhat if i use the direct out? Will it cause trouble
@TwinCreekAudio
@TwinCreekAudio 7 ай бұрын
It might cause a feedback loop. You cannot route the direct out of a channel while returning to the same channel espefially if you have monitoring on in the DAW. You need to use separate channels for sending to the interface and returning back from the interface. That's why recording consoles have separate tape channels. Your console has only 4 separate line inputs so you'll have to use different channels for sending to interface and coming back. It's a little more complicated than that as you can still monitor what's being recorded through the console while monitoring something from the DAW on different inputs. In other words, it depends on how you want to play back tracks while recording new ones. I would probably just use the 4 line inputs for playback from the DAW when recording using the console and then repatch the audio interface outputs to line inputs on the channels when you want to mix or sum with the console. You could also use the first 8 channels for recording with the direct outs and 9-16 for mixing. Looks like a good console. I had a Ramsa but mine was earlier. WR-8816 I think. It had 8 tape inputs for an 8 track tape machine. I hope that helps.

The only bad thing about using Analog mixer is that you don't automation meaning when you move a fader on your analog mixer it won't do that in your DAW. You need something like the Behringer X-touch.
@TwinCreekAudio

@@brentharmonmusicproduction the way my interfaces work, there isn't any latency. The inputs pass the signal to the outputs when tracking like tape machines used to do. I think the same can be done with RME but it might have latency since it's a software mixer.

Im trying to get analog line outs from protools to my Midas Sienna 400 console hoping to mix analog, could you please help me figure out how to get analog outs from the Focusrite Scarlett 18i20 [3rd Gen] which is 18in /20out ? How to use the Tos Link cable to get analog outs ?
@TwinCreekAudio
@TwinCreekAudio 17 күн бұрын
The Toslink would need to go to another interface with analog outs. You should have 10 analog outs on the 18i20 so you'd just connect those to the line inputs of the console and assign the tracks to the outputs in your DAW. I don't know that interface very well but that's the basic idea. You'd need another interface with additional analog outs if you'd like to combine more than 10 analog outputs since there is no way to add additional analog outputs to any interface without linking a second one with some kind of digital connection.

I find your videos really motivating for us who want to switch to analogue gear. I live in Mexico and finding inexpensive gear around here is rather difficult, so I have to settle for the gear they sell through Amazon. However I saw they are selling the Allen&Heath mixer, which I've seen featured in one of your videos. I just wonder what audio interface do you recommend to pair it up with? Thank you !
@TwinCreekAudio
@TwinCreekAudio 7 ай бұрын
I think the best way to get a great interface with the best converters is the RME Digiface. Then you can use it with any converters that have ADAT connections. That means you can mix and match the converters as well. The Behringer ADA8200 is great for the money and if you want a bit more quality, the Ferrofish converters would give you 16 channels of IO. The Digiface supports up to 32 IO total on ADAT connections. Analog consoles of decent quality shouldn't be too hard to find. You might look for a Mackie analog 8 Bus or a Soundcraft used. Some people don't like the Mackie, but I think they sound great and are usually inexpensive and easy to find since they are common. The only new analog consoles will be very expensive but there are some great models being made now that night be available on Amazon though a reseller. Toft, Audient, or SSL. In the case of the Big Six, it has converters and USB interface built in but is quite expensive and lacks some features of a full analog console. If you can find the Zed R16, they are fantastic sounding consoles that should still work with macOS up to Monterey and Windows 10 though I'm not sure the drivers will work beyond that. You also need FireWire to use it or a Nac with thunderbolt and an adapter to FW400. They lack inserts on the subgroups but that's really the only feature the R16 lacks. I hope that helps! Greetings from Texas! I'm in East Texas and I love talking to people from all over the world. Thanks so much for your comment!

That method seems to work fine. I tend to submit sounds that are similar when I work that way. You'll probably see most of the same benefits of total analog summing that way or at least most people won't hear the difference. That's a perfectly good way to work hybrid though.

@@hiteho_woozy that would work too but submixing in the box should work fine too. You can even submix each group of instruments types and then sum the groups on the console.
