Great video! I really liked what you say at the end about finding the right gear for YOU. I owned a MACHINE DRUM twice. Absolutely loved it. So I bought this (Analog Rytm MII) without even looking at its features, nothing. Anyway, since you mentioned how great it is for live performance, I’m wondering your opinion if it’s unnecessary overkill if I’m just using it to create studio music, with no desire to ever preform live. I don’t even really “Jam” by myself. I bought it thinking it’s gonna be the best drum machine on the market but with that bit of advice about buy to try and resell if it’s not for you…I’m already regretting not buckling down to do the research. You mentioned the Digitrak which maybe would be better for me. I always try and buy the most expensive things thinking that equates to quality, but again, maybe the extras I’m paying for will actually just make it more complicated…I don’t wanna ramble but would love your feedback because I really liked your presentation:) I also checked out some of your music and was happy to see you just released something 20 hours ago. Glad to have found you. Cheers from the Beyond the stars.

So true, I can just pickup the rytm or analog four after a few weeks and begin making something. With my Octatrack I need to spend at least an hour getting back into it. But the octatrack was my first love and I wanted one since they first came out so in a way I will keep it forever as its an instrument of the moment and I can just sit on the couch and noodle with it.

I miss my octatrack, but yeah, I had to get rid of my second one because honestly I was tired of being puzzled over how to use it if I stepped away for a few weeks. I do miss it though, it can make some fun little mixes and songs. I'm actually having fun pushing digitakt to it's limits for song writing. it's quite capable.

rytm is more instant and if you approach it like a 12 track sampler and use sample chains it can do a lot, you could play a whole set. octatrack needs some forethought and you need to be practicing with it like an instrument, but its also batshit crazy and can go into worlds you ever even thought possible before.

Hello from the Pacific Northwest! I’m new to this AR Mk2 (the entire Elektron family, really!) and have been trying to learn the differences between this and the Digitakt. I don’’t know nearly enough to make an informed decision on which to keep for the creations I’m prepping for but I’ll have a few days! From what I’ve read and been told by Elektron owners, I can create soulful house, funk, R&B/jazz, & scores on both. However, the price on the AR Mk2 is due to the analog engines (anything ‘analog’ on Elektron will cost mire because of the crispness it can create in addition to soft and grinding) and that there are few more features you’re paying for such as being able to create full songs instead of triggering sequential patterns by hand (or using an external source to trigger the arrangement). And then there’s the size. Your video has helped a great deal as has BoBeat, True Cuckoo, and JAde Wii to name a few. Thank you for your thoughts at the end. I was wondering why you kept the DT if you have this already even though you touched on it briefly. What do you create (or are features) on AR that makes you eventually go back to the DT and think “I’m glad I have both still.”?
@User173
@User173 4 жыл бұрын
great questions. I have both, still. I love the ARmk2 because of it's performance capabilities. It's not just a drum machine, but it's a drum machine with SO MUCH live performance potential that it's just too fun. I don't mean necessarily that I'm gigging with it, but rather that I find myself inspired to play out sequences differently every time I play it. The Digitakt is a lot of fun too, but it's not got the live tweak-ability as the ARmk2 does. If you want just a straight up "set and forget" drum machine, then Digitakt is the way to go. That's not to say it doesn't have live tweak-ability, it certainly does, but once you play the AR MK2 then you will see how much more it has in that dept. I have both because they both inspire me in their own right, but I can't advise one over the other. I'd suggest trying both to any viewer, and then deciding what they need. However, I will say I'm on digitakt number 2 as well as ARmk2 number 2. I have sold them, missed them, and reacquired them.
@SKimbrough
@SKimbrough 4 жыл бұрын
@@User173 I wasn't sure if I was going a little crazy with the joy between the 2. I do see the DT is pretty sample heavy (and what nice samples has!) and the major piece missing from it was the song creation...which the AR Mk2 has. From everything I've read on Reddit and seen on KZfaq, many have said the only piece missing from the AR Mk2 was the ability to MIDI sequence which would make it a complete dream. Well, update 1.50 enables all of that! While experimenting with this AR tonight, I accidentally (pleasantly) discovered a great sound combination for a track and I stopped and said, "ohhhh, this is the tweaking and discovering people mentioned." I'll continue to check out both and see if I can create some Soulful House style of music and maybe something with a feel of R&B. But the Digitone....I'm sold on that one for sure. I thought the lack of time stretching and pitch shifting (which is on the MPC Live and of course on the computer's DAW which I'm trying to et away from unless mix down, etc.) would be deal breaker but it can slice and assign to various keys with no issue. Was cool slicing my vocals, assigning them to 2 pads and launching filters, etc. What a difference. I wouldn't be surprised if Elektron decided to add time stretching and pitch shifting in a future update this year. I know some are in the thought that Elektron wouldn't do that as it would cause undo competition between AR Mk2 and OT Mk2. But OT is for a different crowd, I suppose. Keep making good videos and when you get a moment, please let me know the connection setup for creating a video like this where we can hear you clearly while still hearing the output from the AR Mk2. It's good to ask people who are doing it well. Appreciate the suggestions!

Thank you for this great video. I own the DT and the DN which fits perfect to my modular synth but to be honest I miss the „analog sound“ of the drums so I think about the rythm MK2 instead DT. Comparing all these models I noticed that I don’t understand the elektron product strategy. If AR and OT are the premium machines they should have better sound engines and offer even more value, right? Hmmm 🤔🤷🏻‍♂️. We will see… Markus from Heidelberg :-)

so, some things changed since my video. Elektron released a new OS for the Analog Rytm which allows it to sequence gear via midi. Which is amazing. Perhaps think of the Octa as more of a mixer and sampler, and the analog rytm as a drum machine and performance based sampler. They are two different beasts, but you can ultimately write songs on both. I think it's more a matter of which you need most in your setup. Do you need an amazing performance drum machine? or do you need a "brains" sequencer and DJ performance tool? Yes you can write songs on both, but I really see the Analog Rytm as more of a drum machine than a dedicated sampler and remixing tool like the octatrack.

User 173 thanks for the reply! Im attracted to the two because they’re relatively small (compared to my mpc & sp1200) & Id like to be able to take it around my studio & sample different instruments then chop up & make arrangements out of it all... I do have a modular too, so being able to sample on the fly is key, maybe even interface/sequence the modular would be something.. I dont plan on performing with it, but if its good for that u never know... I like how the Rytm is kinda warm & bouncy sounding...and how choppy & chaotic the Octa seems to sound... Probably need both haha..

It’s nice to have a channel doing such a good sound design in this device. I’m trying to figure out what is better for me. An Analog Rytm mkt 2 or the digitakt + the syntak. I need one or the other to create my own drum samples in the studio.. I work a lot with sound design and in the DAW I usually use synth and sample layers to make my own drum sounds. When I say digitakt + syntak it’s because I’m thinking about syncing the MIDI of the two devices and layering the synth (of syntak) with samples (of the digitakt). Example: in digitakt a clap sample and in the syntak a synth model clap. I’m trying to figure out which choice has more sound design power. In the Analog Rytm mkt 2 I can resample… but in the digitakt + syntak it looks like there is a bigger range of sounds for me to tweak and experiment with. What would be your suggestion? Thank you!
@User173
@User173 2 ай бұрын
It's a good question. It depends on what you like, really. The best thing about the rytm is the performance features. It's truly great. But the digi and syntakt may be a little more user friendly depending on your brain. I think you can get things going faster on the digi and syntakt.

I had a Drumbrute as my first drum machine, and... it was cool, I like the analog-ness, but the sounds ended up not being so inspiring, and frankly the sequencer workflow just isn't super intuitive to me. Rytm, which I got about a week ago, is the other way around... First day I got it I was jamming and getting tracks down much faster and more naturally. It's a very fun and very powerful machine, and I've only just delved into it.

@@User173 Any kind of controller, keyboard, sequencer. The chromatic mode just makes me angry, taunting me with a great sound and impossible expression. I'm sure I'd have figured it out if I would just make time to do it.

@@johncaccioppo1142 It's an interesting thought. It's just three octaves, right? I can't remember, but I think it's only 3 octaves, but still your point is valid: it would be more natural to play it on a keyboard. You got me thinking I should look into that.

@@User173 Yeah it would really open the RYTM up as an instrument. It's 4 octaves I believe. Haven't had much time to play with it lately, Spring is here and the basement is flooding.

@@User173 Page 57 of the manual explains the MIDI config settings. It certainly seems possible but actually getting it to work well might take some trial and error.

I have been thinking about replacing my Digitakt with one of these, but I have a lot of patterns that I've made on the Digitakt that I coulnd't let go - I'd need to recreate them on the Rytm. So for me it's almost as much a time cost as a money cost.

to be honest digitakt is a much more capable unit compared to analog rytm

@@mamadmadcap I don't agree. They are different beasts, but the digitakt cannot do many, many things that the Rytm can. Then again, the digitakt has a few things up it's sleeve as well that the Rytm does not. It's really about what gear speaks to you as a user.

I hear ya. But maybe mix those down and make them finished songs/ beats. try new gear. but if you are happy with digitakt, like It sounds, then by all means, do not change a working set up :D

It’s probably the way I use AR , I tend to use the sample players a lot. Immediacy is another point digitakt workflow is very fast and you have much more control to mangle samples, also you can use digitakt as a 4 channel sequencer which is great, not to mention being able to use the built in effects on digitakt on the external input. The control all knob is ace on digitakt too. Nevertheless Analog rytm is cool and it does what I want it to do and I’m still happy.

great feedback. Thank you so much. I'll be sure to slow down and be more obvious in the future, perhaps even putting text captions with the button combos as well as I do it.

This machine could be so good but elektron refuse to make these pricey devices worth the money. This should’ve been made a sampler with a freaking sd card slot for storage instead of the 1gb +Drive for $1600.00 I just don’t get it.

What I find most annoying about these machines is that each one has some artificial limitation just so that you have to buy all of them. They try really hard not to cannibalize any product.

@@substance90 when they finally added midi out for the A4 along with some other updates to the various products they made some big leaps on improving in this area. It surprised me. With that said I would love a more vast way of using my ridiculous amount of samples with larger storage… I’m hoping their recent updates to their transfer software improves upon this limitation a bit. This limitation is something I recognized after I bought mine but I am getting back to using it and seeing its strengths. it did put me off after I realized I didn’t want to have to spend time managing projects and samples after I filled up my plus drive. Oddly my projects with samples are playing all the kits right now, but my +drive is showing up as empty. So maybe working with entire projects and keeping backups is the way to go.
