A live, semi-improvised track performed entirely on hardware.
The concept of this arrangement was to use exclusively analog synths for voices, some of my favourite sounds, with the flexibility and weirdness of eurorack. I've had this setup sitting on my table for a couple of months, but I've been constantly distracting myself with smaller setups. No more!
Here, I use the Toraiz Squid-a more playful sequencer than it gets to be in this song-to sequence eight different lines across four different devices: four sequences on the Deckard's Dream (pad, harmony, high melody, cyclical thing in 5), two sequences on the Abyss (melody and harmony), and one sequence on each of the Odyssey (bass) and Typhon (lead). A late addition was the 4ms Ensemble Oscillator, which provides a drone during the breakdown section of the song. Lots of fun sounds in this one.
A livestream songwriting session for this song was recorded with my supporters on Patreon, if you're curious to see how the song came together.
Toraiz Squid - All sequencing
Black Corporation Deckard's Dream Mk2 into Noise Engineering Electus Versio - voice 1 (pad, harmony, high melody, cyclical arp)
Dreadbox Abyss into Mutable Instruments Beads - voice 2 (melody, harmony)
Korg ARP Odyssey into Strymon Magneto (path 1), and into Noise Engineering Ruina Versio and Qu-Bit Data Bender (path 2) - voice 3 (bass)
Dreadbox Typhon (using its own effects only) - voice 4 (lead)
4ms Ensemble Oscillator into Intellijel 1u Multi-FX - voice 5 (drone)
Other utility modules: ALM Busy Circuits Pamela's New Workout (clock and modulation), Intellijel 1u Mixer (mixer), Befaco STMix (mixer), Intellijel Audio I/O II, Strymon AA.1 (i/o), and probably more I'm forgetting
Kenton MIDI Thru (MIDI thru!)
Performed and recorded live, with eq, compression, and limiting.

Also. Totally agree. Every piece Jay does takes me on a journey through his creative process. I love the text overs telling me what he is doing. Im a fan of building "mini studios" on my outdoor table and hoping, beyond hope that one day i will rock like Jay. P.s. I tell everyone to watch these, but ,its kind of special to be in an exclusive group of fans. Paradoxically.

This was a nice journey, reminds me a bit of drifting off to a troubled sleep. Your music has at many times, and for long periods, been the only thread of inspiration that has kept me interested in music and preserved that distant thought of some day returning to music. Your last video actually sealed the deal for me. This last weekend I made music again for the first time and it felt good. I did not produce a whole song, nor anthing particularly interesing, but during a very high stress week with work I am still feeling the therapeutic effects of taking a bath in sound. So for now at least I am hooked again. Thank you Jay

Hey Jay, I've been subbed for a long time and just love your work. This track is not only lovely. It's inspiring, and motivating. I spent the time during covid to build a small studio and began my first adventure into sound. Your videos are always what I aspire to be. I can't wait to get back in my studio, rearrange it, and get back to jamming. I listen to this song on repeat at work in the mornings, and It's by far my favorite one to dissect. You have a lot going on in this track and I love it. Thanks, Jay! Hope all is well with you

fantastic bro. I've been dawless in the 90's , got rid of it all went digital, and now I'm back to (semi) DAWless. I really now just use Logic to send the clock and for a little effects. some times I hook up the iPad Pro and do a synth off that. and maaaaayyybe once in a while use a soft synth. So you just made me want to be even more pure . because nothing sounds like the real thing but the real thing.

I have been so fortunate to find your channel this late into its existence because now I get hours of this to dive into. SO inspiring! I can't wait to get into analogue. If you had one recommendation for a starter synth what would it be? I noticed you use the Typhon a lot.
@JayHosking
@JayHosking 2 жыл бұрын
I would recommend the Sequential Take 5 for a starter synth. Analog sound, great for pads, great for bass, great for leads, has decent built-in effects with dedicated knobs for reverb, has a keybed that feels good, has a good layout and workflow, has a sequencer that you can play along with (surprisingly rare!), and more. It just kind of does everything you'd want at the start. The Typhon is great, yes, but would require some sort of playing surface, at least. And thanks so much for the kind words!

@@JayHosking so this means that you would recommand me to get a Matriach? I see that's a 4 voices synth that could create chords. Is that good for creating texture(pad) in ambient music? I mainly make electronic dance music, love something like anjunadeep, organic house or something. It's extremely expensive for me as a student but if I could use it to create something good I think it will worth it:)

Hey Jay, big fan of your channel here! Im a jazz musician that loves synths and Id like to start trying to compose like you are, with a sequencer! Ive got the synths no problem, but I was wondering what would you recommend (for sequencers) for someone that's no into that kind of setup at all. And for anybody here thaare into that kind of music and setup, let me know your thoughts! Thanks and of course don't stop doing what you're doing, its really inspiring! Cheers
@JayHosking
@JayHosking 2 жыл бұрын
Ah, sequencers are such a subjective thing. It would really depend on what kind of music you're going to make, whether you (like me) see hardware as a must, whether you're inputting the notes via pads or keys or stepwise, etc. I'd probably consider a groovebox like the Deluge as a starting point, since it can make loops as long as you'd like, and has a good chromatic pad mode, but it's also got limitations (they all do). I really like the Squid, but it might be limited in terms of step count for you, or note entry. All the best!

Here, I'm using it in poly mode, since it's doing melody and harmony and a few extra bits. But yeah, it sounds great as a mono too!
@SouthShoreSonics
@SouthShoreSonics 2 жыл бұрын
@@JayHosking Run an Abyss through a fixed filter bank HP resonant effect (such as a Vermona Retroverb) and it will rip your face off! The Abyss is Numanesque almost right out of the box! And as a mono synth, it is VCO>VCF>VCA BUT PER oscillator, no shared filter for multiple oscillators like other synths. And in multi-mode you can set different ADSR for filter and amp per oscillator with the D-C-B-A switch with multi-channel on, even if you are on the same midi channel. This means different tonalities (within a range) per oscillator and even a different glide per oscillator. The Abyss and Vermona perFOURmer are my favourite 4 VCO monos (which also can do poly).
