The United States seeks to slow down reforms of international monetary and financial institutions in order to maintain its dominance, although in terms of objective macroeconomic indicators it has long lost its primacy to the BRICS countries, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said at a meeting with representatives of the relevant parliamentary committees on international affairs of the BRICS countries. "At the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund, the United States is trying in every possible way to slow down reforms, slow down the revision of quotas and votes and maintain its share, which allows it to single-handedly block most decisions," he noted. "Of course, this is unfair and undemocratic, and simply dishonest. Therefore, we will work on these areas with particular enthusiasm. This is important for our practical actions," he said. The Russian top diplomat drew attention to the fact that "the aspects of reform of the international monetary and financial system are becoming more and more acute, they have long been overdue." "If we are guided by objective macroeconomic financial indicators, then the share of the BRICS five, the original five members, in the capital and in the votes of international monetary and financial institutions should already be greater than it is now, and the US share should be reduced. Let me stress it: based on objective economic indicators," he explained. Touching upon banking cooperation, the minister mentioned the New BRICS Development Bank. According to him, this bank "has its own specifics: not only members of the association can be its shareholders, but also countries that are not members of BRICS." "In the last couple of years, there have been attempts by Western representatives to influence the activities of the New Development Bank, to subordinate these activities to tasks that are not enshrined in the charter of this bank, but now, as I understand it, everyone is aware of the need to prevent such attempts and strictly rely on established statutory goals," he stated. "We will contribute to increasing the role of BRICS participants in the international monetary and financial system, deepening interbank cooperation, transforming the system of international payments and expanding the use of our national currencies in mutual trade," Lavrov stressed.

Foreign Ministry's spokeswoman Maria Zakharova stated on Wednesday that the warning for citizens against traveling to Middle East territories raised in October 2023 remains in place as the safety in the area persists in being "unstable." Zakharova said that Lebanese, Israeli and Palestinian zones should be avoided as destinations by nationals "unless absolutely necessary." Regarding Jordan, she said that "the security situation there remains stable. The transfer of hostilities from the Gaza Strip to the territory of the Kingdom seems unlikely at this time." Previously, it was known that the German airline Lufthansa announced the temporary suspension of flights to the Iranian capital, Tehran. Meanwhile, the United States, Israel and the media have hinted that a retaliatory attack by Iran on Israel is likely to happen.

Most US aid to Ukraine is spent in the US on US weapons and ammunition, which means the US can upgrade their own supplies, which also provides a lot of new jobs. Providing the arms necessary to drive Russia back to pre-war borders, without having to fight, will also save huge amounts long-term because it shows the whole world how weak they really are, and make all other states think twice before starting trouble themselves. In other words, helping Ukraine win, could lead to an international re-evaluation, leading to the twilight of War. Limiting attacks to isolated terrorist struggles. Russia is also responsible for online propaganda that is the source for internal political conflict within the domestic American system, and deserves to pay the price for that interference. That can only be stopped by allowing Ukraine win, which they are infinitely capable of, if the US and Europe show some spine with their support.

Russia’s foreign debt amounted to $304 bln as of April 1, 2024, which is 4.1% (of $12.8 bln) lower than as of the beginning of 2024, according to files released by the Bank of Russia. "The dynamics of the indicator was determined mainly by reduction of obligations of other sectors on raised loans, including within direct investment relations," the regulator said. As of April 1, 2023, Russia’s foreign debt equaled $357.9 bln

Americas exit from Vietnam may have been different-I served with draftees in the immediate aftermath, and it took years for the all professional volunteer force we see today, emerge. How different would all have it been if the US Army went into the prisons in 1966 and recruited ‘contractors’? Would the protesters have been so outraged over convicted criminals dying in Asia as opposed to their classmates? Great alternative history idea for a story- Dom, let’s do it! 😂

Jenonne Walker, who served in the Clinton's White House, said she was among the minority who would have preferred the European Union as the mechanism for US engagement. “Almost everyone in the establishment wanted it to be through NATO, because that was where our influence was deemed to be greatest,” she said. By 1994, NATO said it “would welcome NATO enlargement that would reach to democratic states to our East,” and Poland, the Czech Republic, and Hungry would be the first to join. During the Cold War, NATO never engaged in military operations. But amid the Yugoslav conflict and Kosovo war of the ’90s, the alliance enforced a no-fly zone, then deployed a peacekeeping force, and in 1999 dropped hundreds of bombs on Yugoslavia. The whole process was delayed and disorganized, according to diplomats, and exposed NATO’s inadequacies in dealing with a hot war. That pushed Clinton to embrace NATO further. “Our inaction was making NATO look weak and irrelevant,” said Walker, who went on to serve as ambassador to the Czech Republic from 1995 to 1998. “And the line in the halls of power in Washington was, ‘We have to enlarge NATO to save it, to make it look as though it were dynamic and on the move and not stagnant.’" Source: vox.com

Sending Cameron to try to lobby the US was about as tone deaf as it gets. Would have been better off sending Boris or someone from the Labour Party leadership who could and would make the argument for Ukraine. Labour is going to win because the Tories are a disaster and can't get their crap together, so it is hard to see how Cameron could be looked upon as anything other than an empty suit. A better solution is sending someone who can put forward a plan on how to win the war. So far, no one has one except the Russians. It is a bad plan, but it is better than none.

On April 10, the Russian military pounded Ukrainian military and industrial facilities in the Odessa region. According to local reports, at least six explosions thundered in the city of Odessa and its region during the day. One of the first strikes was reported at about 5:30 a.m. The target was the strategically important railway bridge between Chernomorsk (Ilyichevsk) and Alexandrovka. The bridge was used for transfer of weapons, ammunition and military equipment supplied to the port of Chernomorsk from NATO states. At the moment of the Russian strike, a locomotive was moving across the bridge. Both the bridge and the train cane under attack. Judging by the footage, the train was destroyed and the bridge was heavily damaged. The local sources confirmed that the bridge was put out of service. In the afternoon, the second Russian strike reportedly hit the same bridge. The head of the local Ukrainian regional administration confirmed damage to “the transport infrastructure facility’ in the Odessa region. “The transport infrastructure in the Odessa region has been damaged,” the official wrote on the social media. Back on April 7, the same bridge came under another attack by Russian kamikaze drone. The kamikaze UAV damaged the bridge but it managed to put it out of service for not a long time. The railway line is of strategic importance for the Ukrainian military supplies. It leads to the southern part of the port of Chernomorsk (Ilyichevsk). The damage to the bridge will heavily complicate the transfer of NATO military equipment that still enters the Odessa region by sea. The Russian military is working hard to block the supply of weapons and ammunition to the Odessa region from abroad. The destruction of port infrastructure is ongoing in all Ukrainian southern regions. On April 10, Russian strikes destroyed the area of accumulation of the Armed Forces of Ukraine on the Black Sea coast near the port town of Ochakov in the Mykolaiv region, where, presumably, about 300 servicemen came under attack.

Europe says the right things about defending Ukraine, but I’m afraid their hearts are just not in it, because when it comes to it wars are expensive and especially destructive undertaking for a democracy. Where for dictators like Vladamir Putin like Adolf Hitler in World War II can just must up all the nationalistic fervor they want and their poorly educated majority will just trample on the minority of their population that say otherwise., Slavo Ukraine, but to be honest it’s not looking good, Russia has too much of a population that it could just throw to the meat grinders of war, and as bravely as Ukraine fights, as Josef Stalin said “ quantity is a quality of its own”.

I am a retired US military person who has been following with interest European debate on US funding for Ukrainian War. What we are seeing in the US is partly a response to decades of "lip" service by NATO members who refused to increase their defense spending because their belief that Uncle Sam wound never abandon them. The Bush, Obama, as well as the Trump administration asked for greater resources devoted to defense. Trump was really outspoken about the rich Europeans paying their fair share and shifting resources to the Pacific just as Obama talked about previously. Trump did play the "bad cop" at times and I had to roll my eyes more than once. But the issue has traction here (Liberal members of my family where complaining about US spending defense was equal to the next 10 countries combined budgets). Germany (one of the worst examples), Spain, Italy, and sadly the UK all spent less than they should have. I can't believe the country that invented the tank has essentially 3 battalions worth of them. In my opinion the so call "peace dividend" was used to reducing spending here in the US was a big mistake. Any person familiar with world history knows how things can change rapidly in a couple decades (China and Russia). Eight Army and one Marine division were deactivated by the Clinton Administration while the civilian portion of the Government remained untouched. Several of these division would have been quite helpful after 911 and confronting possible wars today. NATO members in Central Europe like Poland understand what is at stake and are spending the resources thought necessary. I do support the Ukrainians in their struggle and if I was forty years younger I may have gone over to give a hand,

I agree Poland's recent rise in defence spending is good, but it's only recent. In 2017, it was under the promised 2%. It's only with the recent actions of Putin that they've planned very significant increases. In my country, the UK, we spend the second highest in NATO after the USA in absolute terms - more than Germany or France. Why so few tanks? I'd be interested to hear an expert explain why. I suspect the reason is the UK spends more on its navy, and a lot on the logistics needed to deploy overseas. Tanks just haven't been a priority. Our total figure also includes our intelligence services, as it should - they are very important to our defence. Much as I'd like our spending to go up, a higher priority is getting more help to the Ukrainians. The money sent to Ukrainian is the most urgent UK defence priority. I'd much rather the Ukrainians got an additional an extra few £bn than the UK defence forces.

Russian forces destroyed the Trypilska thermal power plant in the Kiev region, Interfax Ukraine reported on Thursday citing an official from the Centrenergo electric services company. Earlier today, Naftogaz reported Russia also targeted two underground gas storage facilities. According to Centrenergo, there were no fatalities among the plant staff. The strike caused a "large-scale" fire which has not yet been brought under control. Decommunization.

All Biden has to do is to agree to start enforcing US immigration laws. Republicans aren't going to send money to defend Ukraine's borders if Biden won't defend US borders. Personally, I strongly favor aid to Ukraine, but I can also easily see this point. The analysis of US politics is remarkably thin. There is no attempt to understand or explain it.

It's strange how apologists for Putin's imperialism dismiss Ukrainian democracy. When a Ukrainian government is unpopular, they get voted out, as happened to Poroshenko in 2019. Under Putin, the same corrupt president gets an increasing share of the vote (88.48% this year). And, unlike Poroshenko and others in Ukraine, Russian opposition figures end up dead.

Strange. Lots of NATO countries weren't meeting their agreed upon targets for defense spending until Trump suggested that NATO should be a 2-way street, not a device for the US to subsidize Europe. Isn't NATO stronger if it is a 2-way street with all countries contributing fairly?
