This is my all time favorite song. There's no lyrics, but the chords and melodies evoke such a powerful sense of positive nostalgia. The song sounds like your brain simultaneously remembering the good memories of the past and experiencing the present in such a way that you already feel it becoming a memory. It just makes me appreciate life in a way no other song really does

Totally feel you. I’ve always said I want this to be played at my funeral because of how beautiful, serene, somewhat longingly nostalgic, etc it is. Calming and beautiful, tinged with sadness but also light and hopeful at the same time. Love love love it.

also its just incredibly simple writing try listening to uchidas revision of debussy, there is real piano writing, not just my opinion, I'm feeding you facts here. its not that its bad music, its that your ears dont know whats good, thats what saddens me. why cant you not be so average very annoying gen of young humans 1 in 10 isnt a delinquent there happy?

I've always loved Richard D James' sense of harmony and how dissonant and beautiful his melodies sounded. I'm pretty sure its all the same reasons why NIN would always stick in my ears. I'd love to see more Aphex Twin analysis!

This is why I feel in love with electronic musicians. Aphex Twin, Lemon Jelly, Zero 7, Boards of Canada, and so on. It is the one area of contemporary music that both pushes the medium forward while having a firm foot in the past.

Strangely for me this song evokes one specific emotion: Parting ways with someone you love and you can‘t do anything about it. This own sadness paired with the other persons lack of the same care happily enjoying life is the feeling I have by listening to this song since I heard it over 15 years ago for the first time.

I'm so glad KZfaq accidentally did its job by showing me something new in my feed (for once). So happy to have found this channel today. Love this song and I'd love to hear your thoughts on Nanou 2, another Aphex Twin track from the same album. It's pretty straight forward, but I've always found the beauty of that song to come from its simplicity. I'm gonna binge the rest of your videos now that I've found you and also found you're a fan of NIN. At minimum, give that track a listen. It's amazing.

I would love to see you analyse some tracks from this mindblowing masterpiece of an album (Drukqs). Ultra-fast, glitchy jungle tracks (specifically Vordhosbn and Mt Saint Michel + Saint Michaels Mount) have some absolutely gorgeous melodies and soundscapes buried underneath the noise of chaotic, yet very meticulous drums. Would love to see your analysis of those two songs. There is even a piano transcription of Vordhosbn available on youtube, which sounds absolutely beautiful.

I've been listening to R D James since I was a child. Now 30 years on he's the only musician I've technically never looked into as I love the magic and never wanted to know the science. Nice video and I hope you discover more of his gifts he's given to our ears, brain and soul.

This was the song that inspired me to learn the piano when I first heard it. You obviously far surpass my music skill, so thank you for making this video. I worked out quite quickly that even if I had the sheet music it was impossible to play this on two hands with a piano. Very cool piece.

Thanks for putting into words the exact feelings this piece gave me at each moment, and with a more detailed analysis than you usually get with other KZfaqrs! I would also add that in the melody of the pre-chorus and bridge, I noticed he uses the pentatonic scale, which gives it a dreamy and less tonal feel

What an amazing musical memory displayed here in this analysis. I pride myself as natural skilled in identifying and remembering melodies and harmonies and I cringe whenever someone gets some harmony wrong in a well known song when it would be obvious, but I am humbled by and feel absolutely ordinary compared to Ixi's complete intimacy with this beautiful piece, and *on top of that* the perspective and insight into its anatomy aswell as all that it does, is awe inspiring. What a beautiful and well crafted video this is. I already listened to it twice in a row. Also because it's such a good song in itself, ofcourse, but here it is treated really really well. For what it's worth, I tend to go so far into the details of something that I make everything sound complicated even if it's not. haha. So I'd say it's a fairly simple piece all in all, but I noticed more harmonies and rhythmic moments that I hadn't before, and that adds more depth, dimension, and complexity in the experience of listening for me! 7:53 "This is really pretty." When these chords came up, I was reminded of very similar parts from two Tom Waits songs "I'm Still Here," (1min7 & 1min20), or the intro to "World Keeps Turning." Both songs tend to make my eyes a little dewy, as those chord changes are all really pretty.

THE MELODY TRICK OMG. I've always heard the lower note/the bass part in the melody like that! For literal decades! You just made me realise what I was hearing! I guess because the interval is so close that your brain treats them as related, and the bass as the root? It's a fifth between, yeah? Kind of how the bass line moving in thirds for the first two notes doesn't let you hear the inversion cleanly because root-to-third is such a common opening bass progression? HOLY HECK YOU HAVE ME GEEKED RIGHT NOW

Dark Twisted Fantasy is a great album on its own, but tracks such as Blame Game made me and many others reconsider the limits in which modern classical music can take form. Pieces such as Avril 14th, while short and sweet, are powerful statements on their own and can resonate with so many people. The fact you believe Kanye ruined Avril 14th is childish. Something can only be ruined if you let it be ruined.

@@schwuischwui That's true. Kanye was in the wrong, but Richard D James didn't particularly care either. Kanye tried getting the sample cleared since it was such compressed file, so Richard then offered to make a new sample for him that was better. Then Kanye basically said "Fuck you, this is mine now." and Richard basically did the equivalent to shrugging his shoulders.

Killed it... thanks for bringing back my youth with Aphex Twin. I never before recognized the inverted Fm in this song. When I began playing keys when I was a kid, that's how I learned to play F/Fm, with the lowest register being the third. I wonder if they had something similar. As always, beautifully done, by my favorite beautiful maestro. Have a dazzling egg day.

Really nice to watch this. I don’t play piano, but this peace of music has been with me since the day this album came out. Before actually as it was on a bonus CD in of of the music magazines here in the UK. I remember playing it all day when I first heard it. It’s amazing the life it’s taken on all these years later.

Brilliant breakdown! I'm really looking forward to learning this. I did have the exact same experience of "mishearing" the melody that you talk about around the 7:00 mark. In fact, the first time you played that section (before mentioning it), I thought "pfff, she's got that wrong!". But, once you play it all together, it's clear you do have it right. Interesting how what you perceive as the "lead melody" can be fooled by the two lines playing together. I've found a similar thing can happen when trying to dissect vocal harmonies, if the different voices are singing pitches quite close to each other. Fairly often you find that no one singer is singing the entirety of the "lead melody" that you perceive

I love you’re desticpstions of how the song makes you feel and how the feel of the song effected your interpretation of how it’s played. Always loved the dissidently sweet and almost somber melancholy feel of Avril 14th. I think an interpretation of his more ambient work from someone with a well train ear like yourself would be very interesting.

Wow, as a guitar player, it’s so interesting watching the actual physicality of your piano playing! It’s such a different physical practice, if you know what I mean! Really enjoyed this in depth journey through this piece!
