Death is in the scene when puss is running on the rooftops at the beginning before his introductory scene. The part where the crowd does the wave, look at the upper left corner in the doorway. Also, when puss is reciting his deaths, the corners of the number cards for each death has Death in each corner.

I personally think it’s a good thing Death/Wolf doesn’t have that much screen time. He might have lost the element of surprise and fear with the audience if he showed up too much. He’s a nuance character who is always in the dark corners waiting for his chance to send fear down your spine without you knowing when or where he’ll pop up. He was hidden in the crowd when Puss was fighting the giant and he was hidden in the corners of the life count cards as Puss counts his lost lives, meaning he’s always there waiting to collect his next victim. He’s not there for laughs, to be sympathize with or to be taken down in the end, he’s there to be a force of nature; completely unpredictable and unmovable to everyone. That’s what makes Death more scary and more dangerous than any villain/antagonist Dreamworks has ever created

It also makes sense from an ideological standpoint. Puss is not someone suffering from a disease such that death is always at the forefront. For puss, all of his deaths came suddenly and so it makes sense that when Death personified (wolfified?) is chasing him, he always shows up suddenly even though he's always around the corner.

I don't think Death's limited screen time is much of an issue at all. If anything, it's what makes him so memorable. The fact that you can feel his presence throughout the movie despite not appearing much speaks volumes to how good of a character he is. So, I completely disagree that his limited screen time is a valid criticism.

I think it’s worth remembering that Death could have killed Puss at any moment if he wanted to, he was just playing with Puss the whole time. At the end when he realised Puss has changed he says something in Spanish followed by “you’ve ruined this for me now!” The full line with the Spanish is “Why did I play with my food?! You’ve ruined this for me now!” Which further confirms Death was just playing a game the whole time and all the times Puss “escaped” it was just Death letting him go for fun.

I think Death intentionally WANTED Puss to reach the Wishing Star, only to kill him before Puss can make the wish for more lives. My guess is that the moment Puss TRIED to use the map to make a wish, Death might have appeared right next to Puss to kill him instantly (You saw how Death managed to teleport to another dark area and walked out of it without even Puss noticing, and this is when Puss was looking at him and have full attention on him back in the cave). It was when he saw Puss become a changed person (cat) that he changed his mind. At the end of the day, Death still stuck with his principles and values, that when someone values their lives and wishes to make the most of it, he will not take it from them prematurely. Puss's affront to Death is by not valuing how precious life is, which made Death decided to hunt him in the first place. Ultimately in the end, everything worked out in Death's favour, regardless of whether he killed Puss or not. This is because Puss changed for the better and emerged from this ordeal having learned how to appreciate his life.

I agree totally. It makes me worry with every scene he's NOT in. Like we KNOW he's always watching, and because of it, we KNOW he can appear at any time. It's kinda mixed for me. On one hand I love Death so much I want him to appear more, but I love that he doesn't because of what you've listed, but also it's just... so fitting in a weird way that he isn't. Even before we meet him, we actually see him in the crowd of people when he's fighting that giant monster. I feel like it only adds to the fact that he's just always there, even when he's not on screen. Amazing stuff.

The way Puss didn't actually defeated Death and just made him "go away" by fighting for his life is kinda poetic. I'd argue his limited screen time is actually to his benefit. He's a force of nature and had no reason to join the race. Always having Death reappear would oversaturate his image and lessen the importance of each following occasion. When Death shows up it needs to be a big deal. He can't be common place or else he isn't an omega level threat. He'd just be a raid boss that respawns every 20 minutes.

Not going to lie, after seeing the wolf and when he's not on screen, I'm scared he'll suddenly pops up again, Death/Lobo is a great antagonist in all Dreamworks movies, I think for Puss he is a villain but in story standpoint he is a secondary antagonist. Making Death himself the villain against Puss was such a brilliant concept, since the theme of laughing in the face of death itself, mocking death, defying it constantly, so much so death itself comes after you, and in a way that befits the protagonists design, this is just inspired. Whats more, Puss didn't beat him, since him being death, he always wins in the end, all death wanted was respect, and knowing one day he would claim Puss like everyone else.

A 9/10 is criminal, Lobo is easily an 11/10 no contest. Instantly Iconic, every word matters, always there without having to really be there, isnt overplayed, gets what he wanted while the hero gets what he needed, made me feel fear when horror movies cant even do that, reveals key details that add to his character without taking away any of the mystery he brings, a menace to society and overall great design and thats just off the top of my head. Not to mention the fact that he is one of many characters that are all fantastic and yet he completely outshines them all but still plays off of them so they dont feel meaningless.

This story is an amazing moral to value one’s life. Death is always present, always watching. It couldn’t haunt us but when you value your life, you fight like hell. It’s understated that Puss almost lost in the last fight. It was metaphorically his love for Softpaws that saved him. He pulled out something death did not expect, a reason to stay. I have a theory that Death actually intended to teach Puss a lesson rather than kill him. I don’t see him as a villain. He’s just a force of nature. The wolf is more like an avatar he inhabits rather than who he actually is. Cats are afraid of dogs so it makes sense for him to appear to Puss as a Grey wolf, the largest canine ever known. He isn’t a villain but the films main antagonist. Jack Horner is more of the villain in this story. And despite being the main villain he isn’t the films main antagonist which is a fresh idea for a film. Jack Horner even has the cliche tragic villain origin story even if it is glossed over due to him not being the main antagonist. And he mirrors puss’s character in some ways. Except Jack Horner is the only character who didn’t learn his lesson which led to his downfall. So in exchange for Puss’s life, Death took Jack Horner. Once puss learns his lesson, Death let’s him live and leaves as if his task was accomplished. It’s as if that is all death wanted. He wanted Puss to respect death as previously Puss did not, which death didn’t take kindly to. And at the end Death respected puss for taking his life seriously for once and cherishing the one life he now has.
@CJ-dk3im
@CJ-dk3im Жыл бұрын
It's amazing how Death spelled out that he's death in the most LITERAL sense of the word, and people like yourself will still "theorize" that he's an "avatar" FOR death or some other concept. What part of "DEATH STRAIGHT UP" are you not understanding?
@jonathanm9986
@jonathanm9986 Жыл бұрын
@@CJ-dk3im Being a avatar of death doesn’t mean he isn’t Death straight up. It’s just simply how Death chose to appear to Puss. And your taking that line out of context. What he meant is that he isn’t some bounty hunter or anyone simply saying they are Death. People may call themselves for numerous reasons. Maybe because they are known to have killed numerous people, or they are are efficient at killing others, or simply to invoke fear in others, etc. But this does not make them death itself. They simply just inherited a title thus they are just an impersonation of death. And this makes the scene where Puss realizes he is actually death more impactful. Puss now realizes that he isn’t simply up against a wolf bounty hunter who puts kills him. Oh no, it’s much worse than that. He managed to piss off the grim reaper himself. A being that he could never hope to compete against ever. Death is simply out of his league and there must come a time where we all must face him (metaphorically) whether we like it or not. Puss realizing that he has to face Death brings him fear as he isn’t ready to die. He is afraid of dying and he knows Death isn’t there to give him a glass of milk. Take a real life example. J. Robert Oppenheimer has said a famous quote saying, “Now I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds.” Does this mean that Oppenheimer has become the grim reaper himself? No it doesn’t. Nor that was what Oppenheimer was claiming. He was not delusional enough to believe that he has become the grim reaper like in popular fiction. Thus an inheritance of a title, not the actual thing. In this case Oppenheimer inherits the title of death simply as a caricature in an attempt to convey the gravity of what he helped create, the nuclear bomb. Example aside. In multiple stories of Death, throughout the centuries he is portrayed as faceless. Being able to take whatever form he can. Kind of like a force of nature that is always lingering where you never know it will strike you. No one knows when there time will be which is likely why he is often portrayed in this manner, with his most popular depiction being that of the dark hooded figure but this is not the only way he is depicted as like I said, he is often depicted as being able to take multiple forms. Have you ever heard of the famous saying, “the many faces of death”? Even in the classic depictions of death where he is portrayed in his hooded dark figure with a schythe he is often seen without a face. You look into a face and you see nothing. Simply darkness as to convey a void as death does not have a face and he can take on many faces as he so pleases. Therefore while only a theory, it makes sense if it were true (only a theory, never said it was true, just said it is possible and wouldn’t break the story in any way if it were). Death showing himself to Puss makes complete sense when you think about the symbolism and it’s implications. Small domesticated cats are naturally afraid (or more accurately anxious) of dogs, and other canines such as wolves in the real world (unless they grow up around them). This is in the real world. In fiction, cats and dogs are often depicted as deep rooted rivals. Death throughout the film loves to make puss be afraid and anxious. What better way to do this by appearing to puss as a gray wolf, the largest known canine we currently have. And this would also fit the writing trope of cats and dogs being rivals. A great choice for death to appear in. If death appeared in his classic, most famous dark hooded form, this would be a boring depiction as this is what everyone likes to depict him as. Depicting him in this manner is both unique and fitting. Hence, why the writers chose to depict him in this manner. And this theory simply suggest that this is not the only way he can appear to others physically as Death isn’t a physical being like you or I or any other animal but he can choose to appear in certain ways if he wants to be seen as depicted in fiction throughout history. And in the film itself Death literally has supernatural powers. He can teleport from place to place with ease to scare puss, being able to appear anytime and anywhere. He chooses to appear at times when Puss is close to death as a way to intimidate him further as a constant reminder of what he is up against. Death didn’t even go to that maze going through the traditional route that all the other characters had to go through. He just appeared there when he wanted to as to further drill into the audience that Death isn’t a physical being like you or I. He is something else entirely that we or Puss cannot begin to comprehend. All that we can comprehend is that it is a force of nature. Something we all must confront and is never cheated. Do you believe it is a stretch to say that death can shape shift into any avatar he so pleases? Whether or not the writers intended this is irrelevant as this is a theory. One like I said that if we’re true would not break the story in any way. In fact I’d argue, it would enhance the character and make lobo (Death) even cooler. Perhaps the writers didn’t intend it and this is simply a happy accident. Or perhaps they did. And finally, I don’t know why you think that I stating he is an avatar of Death, means that I am implying he isn’t death? Death does not need to have one form for him to be Death. I really honestly don’t follow and I’m not trying to be a hard ass about it. I’m trying to understand where you are coming from when you say this? The word avatar itself means a manifestation. And every time I watch I am more than happy to think of death in this manner even if it simply did turn out to be head canon because this depiction is simply too cool to pass up.

The "death did it on purpose" to me seemed like the reading they would go for, but he sounded genuinely upset when saying "why did I toy with my food" after realizing he can't kill Puss yet. It did sound like he genuinely wanted to kill Puss and his character arc ruined the fun for him. I still kinda believe it tho, but I more view it as, Death gave Puss a chance for personal growth, and didn't really care for end result, either Puss learns or dies, but ultimately he seemed to slightly lean towards just wanting to kill Puss. Not like it's his grand mission, but more like, he bet $5 on a game for fun, and lost. Enough to get him to vent the frustration for a second before accepting it and moving on.

If you give him magical powers, it devalues him and things he do, because some super powerful guardian angel can afford to be optimistic in the face of danger and abuse, they could smell killer roses because powerful angel is not in danger. But a weak, mortal and not very smart dog takes a risk with being vulnerable, and it's that risk that gives weight to things Perrito does.

Jack on the other hand is a villain cuz he's evil for just because,not even minding his henchmen dying. Death on the other hand just wants to do his job,even if he's too much into it. Dude is just pissed at puss because puss has never taken life or death serious which is why he lets him live his last life in peace at the end ones puss realized to appreciate the last life he has. Death even admitted it himself in the end,he came for an arrogant hero who didn't appreciate life,he had no reason to rush his death anymore once puss accepted mortality.

Death is a villain because he went after Puss only because Puss was making fun of him and he assumed that Puss was going to waste his last life, instead of being patient and letting Puss perish on his own. Death didn't go after Puss for his work, that hunt was more personal just to make Puss swallow his words. Despite being a primal and inevitable being, he took Puss's taunts personally. He is not in a position to decide who deserves to live and die. Everyone decides what to do with their lives, and if Death doesn't like it, that's his problem, not Puss's. All that hunting was just for the entertainment of Death, as he himself admits, he likes to see his victims suffer before they die. In the end, he only leaves Puss alone because he is no longer afraid of him, making the hunt no longer funny without fear.

Remember that in a literary/film analysis sense, a villain is someone who's motives (evil usually) are highly relevant to the plot. What makes a villain a villain is motives. You are right that he technically was doing his job.... right up until the beginning of the movie when he makes a claim on Puss's life. See, we know Puss has one life left; Death knows this too but Death is personally offended at Puss for his inability to place value on any of his lives. So what does Death do? He becomes motivated by his hatred for Puss's lack of value of his lives and seeks him out to expedite his death foregoing any personal policies or rules that govern Death himself. That's why he's considered a villain; had the movie never made it clear to us that he was motivated by his own feelings towards Puss (his entire mirror cave scene in the middle of the movie), he'd just remain a simple antagonist (probably a poor one with no clear motivation for being the antagonist).

Honestly, Death is the scariest animated villain I've seen for some time. 21 years old and a fan animation, horror and lots of other films, seeing this character, he is very well written and if anything, over fulfils his purpose as a character. Those scenes where his presence is announced by his whistle are very unnerving and very frightening. Bound to make a lot of kids cry, especially coupled with Puss's reaction of fear and seeming dread showing Puss's real feel of a mortal threat to himself. The way the writers have used Death really creates the ultimate foreboding suspense which is probably one of the scariest things contributed to the movie along with his intimidating and relentless character. Death's an exceptionally scary character by the standards of any family movie, let alone one aimed at young children. Also, I'd think that a character like Death would be ideal for and could be well written into a horror movie given the emotional effect he has in the movie. Really quite a character that stands out and takes peoples attention in the most foreboding ways as well as being a formidable character whose presence constantly evokes danger and fear, regardless of what he's doing.

Like a lot of others, I also don't think he should've had more screen time. This movie was packed with villains, so him being in the movie less just let them focus on the others more who were also fantastic and fun characters. Arguably he's not even the main villain, Jack is. Plus, what more could he even do with more screen time? What more could he say? Maybe he could mock Puss a bit more or maybe they could've had another scuff, but I feel like that would've weakened the overall performance. Death doesn't need a lot of screentime. He's always there, always coming for him. And when he makes his presence known, he makes damn sure it's gonna leave an impact.

Regarding the ending, when he realizes that Puss has changed and starts yelling in Spanish what he's yelling roughly translates to "Why did I play with my food?" and realizes that what he did in the movie changed Puss and now he can't claim that arrogant ass anymore. Loved that last "you know we'll meet again, right?" to give one the last chill on the way out. Just amazing. Honestly this movie was really refreshing with the way it portrayed its antagonists. Goldie and the Bear Family as the Complex, lovable, and empathetic villains/antagonists. They do bad shit but they have a loveable and warm dynamic and a Nuanced, relatable and believable backstory. Jack Horner as the pure evil villain that we all love to hate. He enjoys being evil and isn't afraid to show it either. He doesn't have any complexity other than he loves being evil and he feels wronged by the world. He doesn't care about life and will do anything to get what he wants even kill people who support him. Death is the force of nature antagonist. The antagonist we all fear and respect. There is no good or evil here. Death is just doing his job and he loves his job. His presence is more important than any backstory or motivation. I don't think death is a villain so much as he is THE antagonist. Death is the antagonist that is both the obstacle and reason for the entire story. He opposes puss and boots and everything he stands for at the start of the story. This doesn't make him evil though. Death just abhors people that don't respect him and in turn are frivolous with their lives. He derives sadistic pleasure from the fear of those who disrespect him and the hunt that comes with it. He sees their frivolousness as an invitation to just snuff them out, at least that is his observation of puss. He is a force of nature with a personality to match his stature as death incarnate. At the end when puss learns his lesson and decides to live his life to the fullest death stops the chase. Sure he is annoyed that he wasted his time (who can blame him death is a very busy wolf after all) but he has respect for puss and steps out of puss's way. Its great to see the contrast between the different types of antagonist especially when they are all done very well. Goldie was the weakest of the 3 and even then it was still fun to watch the antics of Goldie and the Bear Family and how much they love eachother.

I couldn't have said it better myself. While I do disagree with the stance that "he's just doing his job" here, since he makes it absolutely clear to Puss that this is personal, he's still very much fair. It wasn't that he couldn't kill him in the end because it was boring or some weird spiritual reasons, he chose not to kill him because, ironically, Death probably cares more about the lives of others out of everyone else in the film. It would make sense, seeing as how this is still the Shrek universe, where that irony is very much rampant. And I see many people saying that he is, in fact, evil due to him being mad that Puss changed in the end. To me, it looked like he was more frustrated at himself for being majorly responsible for this change, and there's also the fact the almost instantly accepts this outcome anyway. So it's more like he would have been fine with either outcome, but along the way, he was so caught up in the fun of tearing the arrogant cat down that he was briefly caught off guard when that cat escaped him due to his "playing with his food".

What I love is that this movie presents all three of what I consider to be the primary types of villains, giving Death a lot to contrast against. Jack Horner - Unambiguous monster, just a pure villain with no chance of redemption and he revels in it. Goldilocks and Co. - Still a bit malicious, but overall more sympathetic with just goals that conflict with that of the heroes. Death - Just a raw force of nature doing his duty. A physical form of an inevitability in life.

And, let’s be honest, if we did get more scenes, the character wouldn’t be as exciting to us since we’d be used to his presence. Therefore, Death only having a limited amount of scenes makes it special because we only get to see him every once in a while and it also adds to him being a mysterious entity. Honestly I'd say his lack of screen time is actually a strength. He's never on screen so much that we tire of him, and you never know when he'll show up. His time on screen is short, and sweet which leaves you wanting more. Giving more screen time can be a gamble that doesn't pay off. Also I think subconsciously this works out because there are a lot of people that when prompted will say they'd rather death was quick and unseen so that they wouldn't suffer. Also personally I'd say his beast dark moment is when he shows up in the crowd gathering the coins.

Seen other videos where people zoomed in to the crowds in Puss's fight against that giant at the start. He was there watching too.

I think that the limited screen time is what made him so special. If there was too many scenes, they would each become watered down, as would pusses fear of death. They made so every time you heard the whistle, you were excited to see what was about to happen.

True the amount of screen time at first was kinda underwhelming but it was so sick because you were just waiting, knowing that the next time death appears will make a big impact/impression.

I think because of how rare he shows up is what Also makes him so memorable. You’re not allowed to get completely comfortable with him and him being used sparingly makes it so much more special when he does show up

My brother was genuinely terrified of this guy. This mofo is the definition of “Who’s Afraid of the Big Bad Wolf?”

also at the last fight the little knife that kitty gave to puss was the reason he was able to survive. cool little detail that goes well with the story

I got a suggestion for a another villain review you could do, Cretaceous and Maelstrom, the main antagonists of Ice Age the Meltdown This deadly Duo of reptilian predators were trapped in ice for millions of years until the meltdown thawed them out. Once they were free, they wasted no time on hunting and devouring any creature that they could find, their first victim being Stu, after encountering Manny and his group they held a grudge against the mammoth after they failed to devour him, and in the climax that grudge ultimately became their downfall as they were crushed by a massive rock Despite having less than 2 minutes of screen time these two make it fairly clear that they are the main villains

Totally agree with this video! When I saw this movie, I kept telling my family to watch it just because, after so long, we got a good animated villain... I remember Jafar and Ursula but they were ages ago. So the wolf felt so refreshing and brillliant. I don't know why animated movies lack a good villain these days.

They did so well with this villain and it ties in with the actual story and the character development of puss

I hope they make a Puss in Boots 3 where Death comes back and forms a truce with the gato and his amigos to save Death's sister, Life (or whatever you want to call her), or maybe even Death's sons and/or daughters, the 7 deadly sins who have gotten into trouble. That would be so freaking epic!
