The fact that even Gus Fring feared this guy is another level of evil. It’s almost on par with Heavy being afraid of Pyro.

Lalo was a great antagonist. Every time he smiled, it creeped me out. He’s like Anton Chigurh with a dash of The Joker.

Lalo fascinated me from the moment he appeared on screen, I remember thinking “this guy is gonna be fun” and also being terrified right from the get-go. He feels like a classic Disney villain; a truly awful person who does horrific things, but goddamn he’s a delight. I loved how his final face off with Gus was one of the very few times we saw Gus truly afraid and unprepared, not at all in control of the situation and fully aware of it, and winning by random chance more than anything. Personally I think that’s why Lalo laughed, because he knew it would haunt Gus that he hadn’t really outsmarted Lalo and had come extremely close to losing, it was a literal shot in the dark, Lalo had truly been his equal match and Gus was never truly able to beat him.

The thing about Lalo is that, unlike the other Salamancas, you can absolutely picture him having a life that doesn't involve being a criminal. The others, like Tuco, you have a hard time imagining them as anything other than some kind of criminal. Lalo is someone you can picture as anything other than a criminal. He's less "A criminal who behaves like a friendly and outgoing guy", and more "A friendly and outgoing guy who happens to be a criminal".

one thing people don’t talk about much is how lalo had EVERYONE scared. gus, jimmy, kim, nacho, mike, he’ll even howard at the end. everyone in the show was impacted by this man’s presence

This actor deserves so much more recognition, he really embodied Lalo so well. His nickname “Lalo” is the only thing that’s more endearing rather then frighting but maybe that’s to make him more charismatic as well as scary (his proper name is Eduardo). If u ignore the murders, he feels like a cool uncle

Lalo is like Col. Hans Landa from Inglorious Basterds. Tarantino stated that every scene with Landa is an interrogation of another character, and it’s exactly the same with Lalo. Every scene Lalo shares with a non-Salamanca or cartel member, it feels like he’s trying to extract information from them, either through charm, intimidation, deceit, or a combination of all 3, and you get this sinking feeling that he always knows what you’re thinking.

Lalo was so charismatic that it killed him. Gus kept feeding him the attention he wanted and Lalo kept lapping it up. So very evenly matched adversaries, virtuosos of their own right played by actors equally as virtuosic. Well fucking done Tony Dalton and Giancarlo Esosito for two of the baddest villans to ever be brought to the screen.

Best addition in BCS. Without him Jimmy's fate as Saul wouldn't have been sealed.

Lalo Salamanca was the human personification of a particularly mischievous cat surrounded by mice and fragile objects. Adorably amusing even as he tortures and destroys everything beautiful around him.

Lalo is the most fun/charismatic villain in BrBa universe, Gustavo is the smartest and scariest, Hector is the most despicable, Saul is the most relatable/least evil, Walt is the most chaotic and interesting. That's my tier

Eduardo "Lalo" Salamanca. It's kind of crazy that a guy can be introduced so late into an already well-established, critically acclaimed universe, as part of a family with an already established reputation (for evil), and still find room to blow the roof off of things with his own impact. That's the sort of character any writer would hope to be able to introduce into an already successful universe of their own. Who doesn't like to run up the score?

When you consider his short time on the show in contrast to the things he was able to pull off in such a short time and how much of an impact he left on everyone, that's a feat few actors can achieve. This show was my introduction to Tony Dalton and he's become one of my favorite actors of all time simply based off the short time he spent on the show

What made Lalo so dangerous is he was so well spoken. He'd talk himself into or out of almost any situation

When lalo INSISTED (in his charasmatic way) that Nacho eats the food he just cooked( in his very first scene) introducing him to Nacho, i just knew he was a sinister man.

Eduardo "Lalo" Salamanca is truly one of the most terrifying and dangerous villains of all time. If you combine Saul's charisma, Mike's intelligence, Gus's ruthlessness, Tuco's violent tendencies, the Twin's athleticism, Hector's sadistic nature and Walter's unpredictability, then what you get is Lalo himself. Eventually, Lalo's sadism is what got him killed as Gus played his game of being unpredictable. Great tv show!

Tony really knocked out of the park. His performance is really the Best part of the show, and thats saying a lot taking in count that the rest of the show is amazing as well.

The one exchange that truly showed me how evil Lalo is was his conversation with Juan bolsa. Lalo was laughing about how his uncle put a bullet into Max’s head, and even Juan bolsa had to remind him that this is not something to be laughed at. He truly has no empathy towards almost everyone, and worse yet, he will laugh and cackle through your demise

Lalo always felt like a “breaking bad greatest villains” bundle. He’s got aggressiveness and cruelty of Tuco, the calm yet terrifying demeanor of Todd, and the calculating and genius of Gus all in one unsettlingly charismatic package.

In my opinion, Lalo is hands-down the single most evil person in the BBBCS universe. Other characters are driven by revenge, money and power. Lalo does it bc he enjoys it.

One of Saul's first questions in Breaking Bad after Walt and Jessie kidnap him in the desert was, "Did Lalo send you?" Right there was an 'Oh God" moment. We didn't know who the hell Lalo was at the time, but this "Criminal Lawyer" was frightened by him. Awesome planting the seed right there.

Lalo is my all time favorite villain. His ability to assimilate into normal civilian life to carry out his plan gives him characteristics of villains that I have never seen. He’s so unique, intense & grabbing when on screen. Props to Daltons performance. Also props to Peter Gould for pushing to have Lalo included in the show against Vince Gillian’s initial thoughts. It’s crazy that Lalo almost never existed in BCS. 🤯

Lalo really MADE Better Call Saul ; excellent character, the actor (I apologize for not knowing their name as I type this) executed the role flawlessly.

My favourite thing about Lalo is that the fact that Lalo being alive being the only thing to unsettle the usually cold Gus Fring does a huge amount to say how much of threat he is, which is proved to the audience as he hunts down Gus' operation.

Man of all the characters in Better Call Saul, Lalo was probably my favourite, what a wonderful and charismatic villain, unpredictable but reeking with personality

Watching his introductory episode and how he behaved i immediately could tell. Those who know how real 1980-2000 (After cocaine and before Calderón) "regional criminals" behaved, though exaggerated for this character. Lalo uses the clothing they wore, the jewlery and terrifying charm, only thing missing being the two bouncers constantly behind 'em. Nothing blatantly obnoxious or "flashy" like after 2010's. Very well researched.

Lalo was symptomatic of the big problem with BCS - nothing could happen to Mike and Gus, so he was built up as this huge threat only to deflate when the plot no longer needed him. His most notable accomplishment was destroying Saul and Kim's marriage.

I dont see the sadistic inclination in Lalo: differently from his uncle Hector, of whom we have record of torturing El Profesor for pleasure, his murders are always functional and most of the time, pretty clean. When killing Fred I see the surgical elimination of a witness. When he kills Howard is just to make a point, again functionally, to impress upon jimmy and Kim that he means business. When he kills the commandos at his house is to survive, when he kills Gus’ bodyguards is to eliminate an imminent threat. All these kills were pretty much single shot, Different might be when he imparts a gruesome violence towards Casper - which we had no record of by the way, but ok, it can be implied: still it was oriented towards the extraction of informations. And when he kills Mateo and Silvia, again, although gruesomely, with a scissor blade, I see no lust, which is a pleasure-of-the-moment, but a functional tactical move to achieve the goal of being thought as dead, a move evidently coldly prepared well in advance, dental records and all that. Sure, he kills everybody crossing his way, like the people smugglers, and he would keep going if the balance was in his favor, like it wasn’t when he was almost drawing gun towards the first officer who was arresting him. But he didn’t feed any sort of internal craving going pointlessly on with violence once established he’s been caught anyway, as Tuco, for instance, kept punching Mike in the face while laughing. What I see in Lalo is a complete disregard for the next man’s life (apart from family of course, and maybe housemaid Yolanda), with no remorse or sense of guilt for their destiny, being them obliterated by him or by others - see the case of Domingo in jail o when Nacho risked his freedom to retrieve a negligible amount of drugs: yes he found it funny, like if it the end didn’t really matter, not necessarily pleasurable. (It will be a different mood towards Nacho in the future, but just because he attempted at his and his family’s life: but that again is hatred and revenge). So in the end I see a psychopathic disregard for the life of others, which are intended to be manipulated and used by him to reach his strategic goals, with no problem in using an horrific level of violence when needed, and an absence of remorse exemplified explicitly when shrugging in the court hall, as jimmy feed him details about Fred and his family. I don’t see a propulsion towards violence for pleasure. And when laughing about the pain inflicted to Gus’s businesses, well, apart being again a functional move (Nacho sayid Lalo would keep hitting Gus businesses until those down south realize it’s not worth to keep the partnership), well, it’s a bit of shadenfreude, a provoked one, but still. In the end he hates the man. But just THAT man. The fact that killing doesn’t normally really bothers him, doesn’t necessarily describes him getting sadistic pleasure from it. Sadism as a behavior is a natural inclination to do art for art’s sake, doesn’t matter the victim, and the more victims the better. Lalo’s one is very much focused

What makes Lalo truly compelling as a villain is just how capable he is operating solo in a world where people of his position have others do their dirty work. It’s only fitting that what takes him down is celebrating before crossing the finish line because he’s so emboldened by his singlehanded superiority over everyone else.

I just love how nice and friendly he is to everyone but they act always nervous around him. There fear conquers over his charm.

I agree with you that what makes Lalo so terrifying is that, in contrast to his more unhinged cousins, he seems like a nice, perfectly friendly guy. But it's a facade for the monster that lies within. I mean, he was so dangerous and cunning that Gus Fring was even wary when dealing with him, and he almost beat him...if only he hadn't been a Salamanca and tried to rub it in. It also makes me sad in a way. As gregarious and charismatic as he is, he could have been whatever he wanted to be. Sadly, that's not what happened and it's not the life that he was given.

I’m an actual big fan of vilains in movies or series. Lalo is one of the best charater of the last decade to me. Each time I saw him appeared this creepy little joy/smile come to me. He is a big part of the reasons that "Better call Saul" is better than "Breaking Bad".

bare in mind the honorific "don" is one of leadership is also used as a respectful way to talk to someone in the same way you may use sir or mister, its also used with elders or the oldest son or male figure of a family, meaning lalo might be one of the oldest salamanca cousins

Lalo was the most terrifying and OP villain we've seen in the BB universe. He has the ruthlessness of a Salamanca, the charm and charisma of Saul, the calculated intelligence of Gus, the ambition and resourcefulness of Walt, and the skill and competence of Mike.

I’m early to this video twice 😎 Lalo is such a terrifying villain, but I wish Lalo had more backstory and character behind him, Tony Dalton is so great it works but a lesser actor might’ve not made it work. Especially considering the stuff he does is the most unrealistic and over the top parts of the show lmao, but he’s just so enjoyable it works. He kinda seems like Todd, but more aware of his actions, and really damn smart. I think this might’ve been shown when he mentions the people that died in his compound by their job for him rather than who they are, though there is someone he mentions by name which might mean he was closer to. I wish he was explored a bit more, but his presence in every scene was always awesome. Great video as always! I’m always impressed by how many of these videos you can make with so much analysis and research.

I liked Lalo, he was more polite and considerate than most people are nowadays. I imagine he could make enemies into friends/allies or talk his way out of almost any unwinnable situation. He really is the devil you wouldn't want to make a deal with.

He gave the plot a complete 180 and that man was barely in the show! (No wonder S5 is GOATed with him as regular cast, even though he was in prison for half the runtime^^) His introduction was a nice wake-up call to some characters like Gus and Nacho, like as a reminder "your business isn't gonna run as smooth as you think it is!" and to the viewer "hey, we ain't done yet"

Lalo can’t be all that bad; he got me to add “Al Compás de mi Caballo” to my Spotify playlist, which I now play whenever I’m cooking 😁 I know you don’t often cover classic film villains, but I’d love to see a few from the era: Rev. Harry Powell (Robert Mitchum) in 1955’s “The Night of the Hunter” and Baby Jane Hudson (Bette Davis) in 1962’s “What Ever Happened To Baby Jane?” are both on AFI’s top villains list. I’d also add Fred C. Dobbs (Humphrey Bogart) in 1948’s “The Treasure of the Sierra Madre.” All three performances definitely influence other cinema villains, and all three films were based on books, providing more research material.

Lalo's abilities where so phenomenal that, all things considered, even Gus with his personal criminal network (including the dangerously efficient Mike) couldn't divert him from his objective and, as a matter of fact, Lalo gets killed by the only thing that even he couldn't have considered: luck

I also would like to mention how Lalo has a lot of opposing features to a lot of characters in the show. He is friendly and charismatic like Saul, but also a complete psychopath that can't be negotiable or diverged from his objective so Saul is powerless. He is very intelligent like Mike and they clash a lot but he has no moral code and again, is more lively about it all, being also kind of a nemesis for Mike. This is similar with Gus, kinda representing his worst nightmare, a highly intelligent Salamanca.

The irony is lalos own meticulousness screwed his plans over. Had he not faked his own death so well, don eladio wouldn't have been so quick to say that gus was innocent of killing lalo (whether he truly believes that or not he has to at least have the appearance of reasonable doubt to deny it).
