8:05 If you don't already know about INDEX(MATCH(...)), Chris, look it up, it made a HUGE difference for me as an Excel user versus VLOOKUP(). (Basically doing index(match(...)) allows you to look up things regardless of the order of the columns in the lookup table and you match columns up by the name in the column header versus trying to count how many columns over something is.)
@vettels6
@vettels6 2 жыл бұрын
Doug, if you like INDEX/MATCH you may love XLOOKUP. I think it was added in Office 2019 and works how a lookup function should have always worked.
@Bodyknock
@Bodyknock 2 жыл бұрын
@@vettels6 I'm not actually a fan of XLOOKUP compared to INDEX(MATCH(...)) because XLOOKUP() doesn't dynamically change columns and rows if the table it's looking in is reordered. It's also harder to parse in that INDEX(MATCH(...)) you simply type in the row or column header names while XLOOKUP it's a lot more convuluted if you want to do anything other than put in the row number or column letter. For example, say I have a table where column $G:$G is States, and another is Population. With Index/Match I can do a lookup like = Index($A:$Z, Match("AL", $G:$G, 0), match("Population", $1:$1, 0)) Notice that I don't need to know which column Population is, it could move around and it wouldn't matter. It's also clear in that function exactly what I'm looking up, namely the Population value in the row with "AL" in it. XLOOKUP would have to look more like: = XLOOKUP("AL", $G:$G, $N:$N) But notice that I can't tell what "Column N" is from this. And if the underlying table changes its order of columns, and the Population column isn't actually in column $N:$N any more, then it might not even be looking in the right place. XLOOKUP is definitely better than VLOOKUP, for sure. And it does have an advantage in that you can do approximate lookups which Index(Match()) can't. But for exact match lookups in a table with shifting columns and rows where I want to be able to see at a glance what I'm looking up I like Index(Match()) better.
@DTChrisYi

You guys need to make a spreadsheet of games each of you hasn't played so you can stay organized & play 'em. There are many Dice Tower videos where someone says "I haven't played this" & someone responds "WHAT??!! We'll have to play that together!" But it doesn't happen partly (probably) because everyone forgets due to...well, life happening. Would be fun to see a video (or 2 or 3) of everyone's ratings of "Catchupalooza" games after a 3-6 month period.

The analysis of the raw numbers themselves is very interesting and well done. However, when the lists are (for some members more than others) so much of a "What's On My Mind Right Now" thing, in an ideal world you would almost want to see lists where campaign/legacy games and non-campaign games are separated, just because it's so easy to differ in how one approaches a campaign game's role on this type of Top List. In other words, if a criteria is "Need to have reason to keep playing it", campaign/legacy games is not completely on "equal footing" with other games in terms of potential staying power. I also totally get it - these lists are meant to be FUN (and they are) and garner traffic, and they should also be fun to make listing games high that you into and playing right now (even though it might not be 110% fair for the amaaaaazing legacy game experiences you had with games (still in print) you finished 1, 2 or 3 years ago and are not exactly lying awake for right now).

Regarding Netrunner: project Nisei were at ukge, they are the non-profit fan group that are keeping the game going but aren't using the netrunner name on their products. As for the netrunner trademark, it is currently in limbo. WotC explicitly abandoned the trademark a month after R.Talsorian games applied for the trademark. That application is due to be evaluated next month(ish) so I doubt anyone is currently producing anything official for it.

Also, I think it's easy to undersell how much people like the dice rolling. It gives the game a gambling / Ameri-trash/thrash feel that many other games don't have (which admittedly turns a lot of people off). BUT because you roll so many times during the game, the odds tend to work out. I know it's not the most complicated game, but it's my gaming "comfort food" for sure. I also think it has a deceptively high skill ceiling.

Though Roy and my personal styles of games do not line up, I think that his enthusiasm during his Top 10's might influence people trying out the games he likes. For example, though I don't personally like too many Marvel or Space games, I might try them out due to his enjoyment of these themes. I bought Xia prior to knowing Roy likes it a lot, but am more enthusiastic to try it out due to his expression of the game. Biggest shock of this video for me was that Chris loves Brass: Birmingham but really dislikes Great Western Trail, because for me they scratch a lot of similar itches/fire on a lot of the same cylinders/some other not great metaphor for each one generating similar feelings in me as the other. Both feel so fun and thematic and "smooth" to operate the mechanisms, and the rules don't inhibit or get in the way of the actual strategy meat of the game. At least that was my feel for them. Very different games, but they immediately make me think of each other.

Using the number of people who included the game on their list to create an average seems meaningless. If 7 of the 8 people didn't like a game enough to include it then that tells me the game "sucks" and that the one person who liked it is unusual. The average for just those that included the game is misleading since it skews the game to look better than it clearly is to the group of 8 people. What you need to do is get the list of all games on all lists and then for those that didn't include a game, have them give the game some points. Then we can get a slightly meaningful number for all of these games.
@DTChrisYi
@DTChrisYi 2 жыл бұрын
It's just creating a different data point. All it's saying is for the people who put it on their lists, is it typically higher up or lower down. It's not there to skew or mislead. If anything, your point is proven, "This game has an average score of 199 points, based on only one rating. Clearly that means one person LOVES it and it's not to the other people's tastes nearly as much." That isn't meaningless, because you just inferred meaning from it. Your idea would give us a broader perspective on each single game, which is a neat idea. But it would be much easier to compare our actual ratings (1-10 scores) on a game rather than try to put it in context of the Top 100 list. Also keep in mind that it would be a ridiculous amount of effort for all 7 of us to go through everybody else's lists and assign points for every game that wasn't also on our list. Especially given that we haven't played every came on each other's lists so how would we determine those numbers? Appreciate you watching, and if you have any other thoughts I'd be happy to consider them for next year.

I've found that a lot of 'greats' are great because they were firsts, leaders, innovators, trend-setters, genre-makers, but were actually improved upon by cheap imitators (such as adding features or alternative stories/characters) that never make such lists. Maybe the originals would be on a Play This Version First list in a genre, so that the improvements that good (value-adding) imitators introduce can be appreciated... As far as the people's list, curious would be knowing the effect that marketing dollars spent (paying to be on a prime Target shelf or featured on Amazon, for example) has on it (people buying whatever is placed in front of them)... maybe a list of how many times a game has been played this year would be a measure (or a secretly like list! (game you won't admit you like)... then an 'immersion' list - games that immerse you in their worlds (better if historic - revealing the culture and mindsets of the era)... may you have many fun lists in the upcoming future...

The point system heavily weights crossovers, as can be seen from the ranking compared to number of times on lists. I can appreciate Tom’s point that his #1 is not 100 times better than his #100, but for most people their #1 is more than twice as good as their #100. I’d suggest it might be 5 times as good, which means points should go from 125 to 25.

It also depends on the person. If you’ve only played 300 games, your #100 is probably quite a bit worse than your #1. If you have played 9,000 games then sure maybe your #1 is only twice as good as your #100. But that is clearly more the exception.

Without any evidence I think Dixit might have jumped because it got mentioned a lot. “A Dixit type game” sometimes makes me get out Dixit and play it instead of buying more games. ;)

Great work, Chris! I would invite Tom or others to include a legacy of each game (not all 3 Pandemic) to have as a reference of comparison of how beloved it is, since it is advertised as top games of all time, rather than our 100 current favorite games.

This was an interesting video, but I don't understand what you were trying to do with the points being from 101-200? It doesn't change the averages unless you're using a different number than the number of crossovers. ((x+100)+(y+100))/2 becomes (X+y+200)/2 which is the same as ((x+y)/2) + 100. The plus 100 isn't changing anything.

It isn't to change the averages, but it's to prevent huge swings in the total "points" each game gets. For example, if a game is #1 on a single persons list and gets 100 points, it is immeasurably higher up than a game ranked at #95 but on five people's lists for a total of 25 points. The model of 200 down to 101 points favors games that cross over on more people's lists because that really is more of a feat than being high on a single person's list. Like Tom said, I'm not saying that my #1 game is 100x better than my #100 game, so the points reflect that with the system we used.
