My MOST EXCITING upload yet! New York City, 1994, at the Intel World Speed Chess Tournament. In hopes of repeating his victory at the first tournament in Moscow, World Champion Viswanathan Anand plays amazingly after falling to an overwhelming time disadvantage of 2 minutes and 38 seconds in a blitz game against Grandmaster Ilya Smirin.
Go ahead and click the like button (I know u wanna).
Oh what the heck, while you're at it, might as well add this to your favorites ;-)

@gerardoleon8542 7 жыл бұрын
treta yug by sacrificing his queen he would have turned his position in a winning one after 2 moves later. It was done for positional advantage thought. Don't understand your perspective.
@tretayug3500
@tretayug3500 7 жыл бұрын
Gerardo León No it wasn't a positional advantage the opponent just blundered the pawn overlooking the mate threat and therefore it wasn't a sacrifice its just a capturing of pawn..! To know exactly what is called sacrifice look at Kasparov immortal queen sacrifice game or Fischers Sacrifice Game and Even More Fantastic and MindBoggling would be to watch Anand vs Aronian (Tata Steel Chess 2013)

Maurice Ashley is the commentator, and hes a very accomplished grandmaster. Of course, he has to misuse some terms such as sacrifice for the sake of making the game more exciting and enjoyable to watch, especially in the case of an audience that is not familiar with chess.

Well the queen sacrifice is technically a sacrifice. It's the most simple case of a sacrifice, where you give up a piece to checkmate on the next move.

I think Anand wanted to return to the main variation that was played but suddenly he was afraid that Smirin will sacrifice the knight on f7 so he did a bit of calculation. White move-order was rare and it reaches the same position as in the main line with an extra move.

Hello. A queen sacrifice is where the opponent will lose material and the game if they DON'T take your queen, so it seems the person is now sacrificing his or her queen for what looks like a loss in material. In the above game, white made a mistake with the move f4 as it's not protecting the pawn on e5 at all - if the pawn on the f-file leaves that file to re-capture, white gets mated in one move. In effect pawn f4 is pinned. That's not a sacrifice that's an oversight on white's part.

Also, remember that Anand only had to draw this game to win the match. By the time the endgame kicked in, his opponent had no chance to come out with a win.

@ChessNoir It unleashes a discovered attack by the Bishop on e4 on White's Queen. White's Bishop on d4 will drop. So too will White's Bishop on c4 if Black captures the Bishop on e7. And if White decides to hang on to his c4 Bishop then Black can post his dark squared Bishop on c5 with threats on f2, and a threat of a Bishop sacrifice on g2 leading to a probable mate as well. BTW 2.22 refers to the time on Anand's clock. It corresponds to 5.12 on the video.
