Once he had an idea what Smirin was going for (which could have been ten moves out), he decided what opening he would play to avoid that line. The plan worked. This is psychological trick - to spent time for nothing first and then play very fast. Just to make game faster: in that conditions opponent often plays fast too. Just like Smirin did

The huge majority of top players from that era have either faded into obscurity or stopped playing competitive chess...but not Anand, he is still right up there in world chess..he is 50 on the 11th December 2019...what an amazing chess player he is

Maurice and Danny together commenting blitz games was such an amazing combo. Exciting commentating style, actually following the live game, spotting tactics without deviating to talk about all possible variations. Something modern commentators should take inspiration from.

This Commentary is gold. That's how commentary should be done. It makes the whole game exciting including those 103 seconds.

The real reason why Anand took so long to move After playing knight he wondered whether it is a male or female but after 1:43 he realised gender discrimination is bad for society and continued the game
