I don't follow the ATP anymore, but the first set feels very much like what an ATP match could be like - lots of big serves, unreturnables, and short points. Myskina doesn't really dazzle here, but she is more than consistent enough and by the end of the match out plays Davenport.

Thank you for this, been trying to find it for so long. I remember it was considered an upset even though a lot of us saw it coming.

Damn I just learnt about this match like 3 hours ago and thought it would be great if there were highlights. Great timing!

It's not a memorable match or at least not one that gets remembered - it basically just decided who would lose to Sharapova in the semifinal. But I hope you liked the highlights.

Thank you so much! One of the myskina matches I've been dying to see. Myskina at her best.. Her movement was out of this world here. This was probably her last top 10 win tho which is sad..

Noooo, she beat Dementieva the next day, as well as at Wimbledon and Zurich. She also beat Kuznetsova at Eastbourne. She had at least 4 more top 10 wins

@@chriscze6153 loll that match was a mess. Though I think I remember they had that almost 50 shot rally in that match that I kept rewatching before

Myskina was a much better player than Dementieva. I am surprised she lost to her as much as she did. She was more consistent and had a better serve.

You can tell they had the same coach that worked on their ground strokes (Robert Lansdorp) because their forehand technique is exactly the same: powerful, consistent and flat, like a buggy whip motion. Lindsay is known to be an incredibly sound ball striker but Myskina was right behind her in her technical abilities, Lindsay was just the stronger, bigger player who ultimately had more weapons and range.

Wow Lansdorp’s students did really well in 2004 - Sharapova, Myskina and Davenport. The first two won the French and Wimbledon and Lindsay would have won the US were it not for the injury but in any case won 7 titles in the year. Maria won this event

If Myskina had a more potent & efficient serve, she would've did more damage during the 04-06 period. It was literally the only missing piece to her game.

Thank you for this! I was never clear on how Lindsay didn't qualify for the SFs. Is it because she won less sets than Myskina?

You are so very welcome. To be quite honest I don't understand how it works, I guess so, but in the next match against Dementieva if Elena had won in three sets as she did against Rubin the previous year, then Myskina would have been out and Lindsay would make the SF. That's the only thing I understood. This round robin format is a MESS. I hate it. Anyway.

I just checked, in three-player ties (Myskina, Serena and Davenport had each one 2 matches and lost 1), the first stat that determines who advances is the percentage of sets won. Myskina (71%) and Serena (63%) beat Davenport (57%) in this stat! Pretty complicated, though ...

ATP matches don't have this much creativity in angles. You don't see the play on angles in men's matches as you see here.

How could Lindsay lost 2 times indoor to a player like Myskina? she should have those matches… we all know Myskina is really good indoors but Lindz is on another level.

I posted a lot of Myskina matches for the indoor season - I think it was clearly her best surface and she was at her best form in 2004. I'm not surprised she was able to outmaneuver and redirect the pace of Lindsay's ball at all, especially on a slower surface like Moscow.

@@chriscze6153 yep… at the ultra lighting fast court of Stuttgart in 2005 Lindz wins 6-0 6-4… in my opinion that should have been the outcome of most of their matches 😬
