The beautiful thing about making highlights is that you can skew whatever match you want to be seen however you want. Elena's form was really not that good going up 61 30 - each of them hit around 50 unforced errors for the match, but Myskina's were more in the first half, and Elena went wild with errors at the end. It isn't like Elena was ever blitzing her, as soon as Myskina gained control of her game it was always going to be even. But it is sad to see at 6-6 in the TB Elena had hit 4 FH UEs....she was so scared to finish this one out. She didn't deserve to win with that kind of approach, unfortunately.

This loss really does hurt and that's why I'm thinking of posting a nice win of hers to have a better taste in the mouth as my next match is supposed to be the 07 3R loss which is for sure one of the worst matches she ever played. I'm thinking about it.

As for JJ or Wozniacki...they were simply amazing defenders and Elena was never a Serena or Lindsay type of offensive player to consistently break down the defensive skills of the truly elite defenders. She was somewhere between an aggressive baseliner and counterpuncher her entire career and could often hit herself out of matches, which is something JJ or Wozniacki rarely did in their prime. I think it makes sense in retrospect that she lost to these types of players considering how inconsistent her own game/frail mentality were. She had to be at her best from beginning to end which is just really hard to do for anyone.

@@chriscze6153 Absolutely, JJ and Wozniacki are incredible defenders but for me Elena was objectively better, she had the game to hit them out of the court, but if you fed her enough balls she had the tendency to overhit her shots. Serve problems aside, this particular match just showed how poor her court positioning was at times, her reactive style of defence cost her a lot. And even when she manged to hit amazing shots on the run and neutralize the point, she would hit an easy unforced error in the next shot. I love Elena with all my heart and it hurts me to re-watch some of these, but I want to thank you for providing us with quality highlights and reminding WTA tennis fans what a truly great Era looks like.

@@user-kl3sl5pp7g Trust me, it hurts me a lot as well to do highlights of some of these matches. All of her losses to Myskina hurt that extra bit because at the end of the day I agree - I think Elena was a better athlete and had bigger weapons. But that's why Myskina was such a deceptively great player, she could lure players into errors and had plenty of great shots and court sense too. I really can't think of more than 2 or 3 players today with such court savvy as Myskina. I like to give Myskina the benefit of the doubt. JJ and Wozniacki were better pure defenders but had so much less game than Myskina, and those are the losses that truly get under my skin. The Cincy 09 SF and New Haven 10 SF are both just.....really avoidable losses.

@@user-kl3sl5pp7g Elena was a better athlete than all the players mentioned and the pace she had at times was insane. That being said, her technical weaknesses and serve were such hitches to her mentally, I’m going to be honest and say that Myskina was the far more talented player. There’s no way she should have lost to Elena when she knew she could pick apart her weaknesses so easily. I think rather, Myskina won a lot less than she should and could have.

I was able to watch this because I like Myskina, but the hardest for me to watch so far has been the 2001 AO loss to Bedanova. The commentators in it talk about how they think Elena can reach #1, and it's just really disappointing to see how quickly 2001 and her career panned out after her promising 2000.

yes, I just finished editing the Myskina/Davenport Moscow SF yesterday. I'm waiting to get her Moscow 2R and QF matches and once I have all three I will post those, probably in July or August.
