I work for a large window company that you sell. I'm in customer service and I find your videos very informative. There have been more than a few things I've picked up from your videos that have aided me in my job. If I get anyone looking for replacement windows in the Houston area I'll be sure to give you guys a strong endorsement (which I've done a couple times already). Thank you!

George from Window Mechanic in New Jersey: Good video very accurate and informative. You may have mentioned that when the space between the inner and outer glass is more than one inch, convection starts to take place, which is vertical circulation of air between the panes, which reduces energy efficiency. Thanks for the heads up about Cardinal Glass

Another great video 😀. Great explanation and easy to follow for the homeowners to understand. One of the things I like to express about ProVia as well is how we make our own IGU using a reverse osmosis wash and a static bar to clean and remove dust and fingerprints on the glass before we add our Super Spacer and it goes into our fill chamber. Again quality content and look forward to watching more!

Thanks again Jeff. I have learned so much from your videos and I really appreciate you taking the time to answer most of our questions. I wanted to know if there are situations when a triple pane can be too heavy for the replacement if there were double panes there? Not talking solely on the quality of the window brand frame, but also the structure and the effects of years of carrying that extra weight on it.

Thanks for the lesson about glass Jeff. When thinking about the thickness of the glass, when does extra-thick or double-strength glass come close to the weight of a triple pane unit?

Thanks for the video Jeff! Any tips when it comes to replacing glass in windows that have SDLs. Do you try to reuse them and stick them back on the new glass or do you try to order new ones?
@HoustonWindowExperts

We just ordered new ones and cut them in the field to fit. That adhesive tape will likely never work again.

Great video. If replacing a failed IGU and assuming the homeowner will pay (so not covered under warranty), is there a benefit of sourcing the IGU from the window manufacturer or are local glass shops plenty good enough?
@HoustonWindowExperts
@HoustonWindowExperts Жыл бұрын
I prefer the manufacturer when possible for the sake of consistency. However, if that's hard to do, a reputable company locally should be able to do this quite well.

Im having a home built in SW Florida and they are using PGT insulated low e. is that good? also second question. My dad has a home built in 2006 and have single pane windows. can the glass alone be converted to double pane?
@HoustonWindowExperts
@HoustonWindowExperts 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you for watching and your question. PG tea is a good brand for any coastal area. I do not like it if you don't need it. I think it's a little too bulky and steals a lot of glass space. But if you live in Florida, you're probably going to need it. To my knowledge, it's impossible to swap single pane glass for double pane because the frame depth will not allow for the extra depth required by having two panes of glass.

I'm in San Antonio, recently had all the windows in the home replaced by Green Energy of San Antonio. Ever heard of them? If so, what's your take? I really wish you guys had a location here. I've been completely geeking out over window technology ever since I came across your videos.

Green energy, Apex, and a few other companies are heavy on the marketing and tend to be a little pricey. They do not make any windows, they find a supplier and have a private label applied. If you're happy with your windows, that's what counts. Thank you for watching!

what does super spacer made of? RWA and Pella use stainless steel for spacer while many other company use aluminum spacer and which is the best?
@HoustonWindowExperts
@HoustonWindowExperts Жыл бұрын
They all have pros and cons. Anything from Cardinal is going to be outstanding. It's really a personal preference at this point. The energy values are miniscule.
@gregcorwin8316

Last time I looked, roughly 1/3 of IGU's built in North America use the Intercept system (tin plated steel or stainless steel), 1/3 use one of Cardinal's two stainless steel systems (XL or Endur), and the remaining 1/3 use one or another of the other options including Superspacer, Duralite or Duraseal, aluminum, and a few others. As Jeff pointed out, it's more important to buy a quality window from a qualified distributor/installer and let them worry about what spacer to use than it is to overly worry about the spacer that they use. Superspacer is foamed silicone wrapped in mylar with an acrylic adhesive to attach it to the glass followed by one of several different approved sealants added for air and moisture resistance. One big difference between IGU spacers is that Cardinal manufactures complete IGU systems whereas all other spacers are sold from the spacer manufacturer to either the window company or else to an independent IGU manufacturers who build the IGU's and sell to window companies. Cardinal's spacer is only available in a Cardinal manufactured IGU, it is not available separately to anyone else, but there are other similar stainless steel spacers that are used by other companies. Also as Jeff pointed out, with the exception of aluminum the differences in edge temperatures between different spacer systems is a lot less than what some spacer manufacturers and window companies would have you believe. For example the edge temperature difference between the best Superspacer variant (they had 7 different variations last time I looked) and Cardinal's Endur stainless steel spacer when used in an IGU is that Superspacer is .8 degrees F warmer than Endur. The warmest spacer commonly used is Duralite which is about 2 degrees warmer than Superspacer in an IGU configuration.

Hi Jeff, thank you for your information. I do have 3 questions. 1) With triple pane IGU systems what is the cost benefit ratio compared to 2 pane systems. Is there a substantial performance difference for very cold/hot climates? 2) Have you heard of using vacuum instead of noble gases in-between the glass for sound reduction like the Pilkington Specia windows? 3) Finally, do manufacturers use 2 DIFFERENT thickness panes in the same IGU setups for sound isolation? Thanks
@HoustonWindowExperts
@HoustonWindowExperts 3 жыл бұрын
1. Dual pane is better and a hot climate while triple pain is better in a cold climate. I do believe it is worth the price difference. 2. I've heard of vacuum sealed glass and commercial applications but have not seen it available widely a residential at this point. I do believe it works very well for sound reduction and for energy efficiency. 3. Offset glass does contribute to sound reduction by about 5 to 10%. It's a very inexpensive way to get better sound reduction.

Talk about psychedelic. That shirt of yours is giving me flashbacks to the 1960's! I've really enjoyed your videos on all things windows. They've been very educational. Do you have any recommendations for a glass company near Mission Viejo, CA? I've got several IGU units that have failed and get fogged-up during our "winter" months. At first I was just going to have the IGUs replaced on the 30 year old Alenco aluminum windows. However, after looking for what it's going to cost for the upper/lower IGU's for a single-hung sash window it actually might be more cost effective to just buy new windows.

I have two double paned windows that are about 10 years old. Both of them have purple mold growing INSIDE the supposedly sealed part of the glass. How does this happen? Do the seals break? I never open or mess with them, so it's nothing I have done wrong. (Just want to make clear, these are not windows from you guys, I am just asking a general question).
@HoustonWindowExperts
@HoustonWindowExperts 20 күн бұрын
It sounds like you have a seal failure. It's quite rare to have that happen to high quality glass units. I would contact a local glass company to see about getting those swapped, or if you're interested in replacing them with a better quality unit, check out my website. I can point you in the right direction.
