This review session is for students preparing for their bone practicals. In this video I try to distill all of the advice I normally give to students about to take their bone practical. Included are concrete study tips and strategies, examples of common study errors I see students making, and hints for how to process the HUGE amount of information you are being expected to know.

Okay so you are a Godsend. Thank you so much!! I'm so grateful i found this. I didn't do so well on my last Practical/Theory and felt defeated. Your video encouraged me not to give up on this forensic nursing dream of mine. Thank youuuuuuuu

You are so welcome! It hurts my heart to know how many students are out there thinking that they aren't doing well because there's something wrong with them... When the reality of the situation is that likely they just need to develop better study habits! No matter what academic obstacles come your way, just remember that learning requires a series of skills (note taking, textbook reading, reviewing, etc etc) and you are capable of getting better at any of those things. Good luck in your studies!

Thank you! Your video is very helpful. I found it while I was searching for a video that just names the bones. I thought if I could just hear the names of the bones throughout the day I would develop a stronger memory of their names on a subconscious level, so I would be less likely to forget them during the test. But I do like that you explored the meaning behind the words and their relationships. That is very helpful and I will be reviewing this part again.

I'm glad you were able to get something out of it! Ifyou just have to know the names of the bones themselves it can be really helpful to touch the bone on your body and think the name! If you need the names of the specific landmarks on each bone I have a whole playlist of videos I've done

@@AnatomyHero Thank you for the tip! I think it will definitely help me to remember better if I touch the bone on my body as I study it. I put so much work into creating flashcards because I added one image of each bone on each flashcard. But I looked at practice tests of the bone practical exam and it was difficult to recognize bones that I studied when they were shown in different settings. The bones in this exam are not clear pictures and they almost look fossilized. They even show them in weird angles. I also find it difficult to answer the questions on articulations because it's not always clear what each bone connects with. I really like your study tips though. I'll definitely check out the playlist that you recommended. Hopefully studying for the muscle practical won't be as difficult as it has been to study for the bone practical :)

@@chariots8x230 Being online for anatomy is such a struggle! I can't remember how if said this in the video but one thing that can help with recognizing landmarks in different pictures (besides using a variety of pictures) is while you're studying to always talk yourself through how different structures are related to each other in space...for example if you know the zygomaticus minor is next to the levator labii superioris and then that the levator is next to the nose...on your test you can start at an obvious point (like the nose) and work everything out from there. I do know that sometimes the pictures can be really confusing though! People always disagree on what is harder - bones or muscles! I think probably the most important thing is if you need to name the actions of the muscles... You should understand specifically what the action terms mean. It doesnt help to memorize that a muscle does hip flexion if you don't even know what hip flexion looks like. Once you know what the action terms mean..when you learn a muscle does a specific action you should try to envision how the muscle could pull and move the body part in that specific way. I also have a series on muscles and actions... Some are better than others because I'm still working on the best way to present the material!

@@AnatomyHero Thank you for the tips! I'll look at the muscle actions before I start studying the muscles. So far, I've only been focusing on learning bones and haven't really started learning the muscles yet. I can identify most of the bones but I still need to work on learning specific regions, such as the different sections of each of the long bones. When I study, I do try to look at the relationships between different areas so that I know where other bones are located in relation to a specific bone. Even though I haven't started learning the muscles yet, I can tell that it will be a lot more difficult than bones. I noticed that the muscles have very difficult names. They're hard to pronounce and most likely they'll be hard to spell. If this part is difficult, then I think memorization will also be more difficult. Additionally, unlike bones, muscles actually come in layers. Some of them are above others and some are beneath others. I purchased some flashcards that I thought would help me study the muscles but I don't find them very helpful. They show all of the muscles together but I cannot visualize the muscles unless I also see each one of them isolated. Maybe I can get away with using one picture to identify the different bones, but this method seems much harder with the muscles. I think a variety of visuals is more important when studying muscles. I studied a flashcard on muscles to see what it was like and I just can't remember what I studied. But when I studied bones, I was able to pick up information much easier and faster. I don't think I'll have time to make detailed flashcards for muscles because that would be too overwhelming but I think I'll just break up the studying and do a few muscles each day, while familiarizing myself with different visuals from Google. It will be a slower process but hopefully it will be effective. I also find that I can memorize better when I say the names of the bones and muscles out loud, so that's what I try to do when I study these kinds of topics. Thank you very much for your help :)
