Ancestor of Anthony Ramos Escaped Bondage in a Very Unusual Way | Finding Your Roots | PBS

Anthony Ramos discovers his fifteenth great grandfather was not Spanish, but a Guanche, the Spanish term for a native inhabitant of Tenerife in the Canary Islands. Living under Spanish slavery, this man managed to acquire his freedom by finding a substitute. Surprisingly, after obtaining his freedom, Ramos' ancestor then served with the Spanish military.
Anthony Ramos is a Grammy®-winning artist, Golden Globe®  and Emmy® nominated actor who starred in TRANSFORMERS: RISE OF THE BEASTS, which opened #1 at the box office, world wide. Ramos was most recently seen in Sony’s DUMB MONEY directed by Craig Gillespie.
Ramos is known for inaugurating the dual roles of “John Laurens” and “Philip Hamilton” in the critically acclaimed, TONY Award-winning  Broadway musical and feature film, HAMILTON in which he was Emmy nominated.  He went on to star as the lead in Jon M. Chu’s IN THE HEIGHTS, the film adaptation of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Tony Award-winning Musical, which was released in theaters and streaming via HBO Max. For his portrayal of “Usnavi” Ramos earned a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy Film and was included in Indie Wire and W Magazine's year-end Best Performance round-up.

it's like captain jack sparrow, when he freed 100 slaves, he had to replace the 'cargo' but he was reluctant to do so which is why they branded him a pirate. was reminded of that during some part of this video 😆

The Chumash in the Tuscarora people from Santa Barbara County in Ventura County in LA County or enslaved for 200 years before the it was realized that they were embedded and so they decided to give them some land here and there because they weren't going to win it was 11-year-old War. And as a result of that the lateral violence is insane our culture, are families were stolen. I am angry because, we are disenfranchised. I'm told that we don't exist at all. All I have to do is look in the mirror. I've certainly attained the bigotry from others, but when it comes to status or land claim well that was taken from us. on purpose! Eugenics is alive and well and making a comeback, and we better pay attention. Blessings and Truth for all thank you Louis Gates you're awesome. Skip rules!

I maybe wrong. It seems to me that the people that speak Spanish seem to think that Spain is the MotherLand. They don’t seem to know their history that Spain colonized. Many definitely don’t know or won’t recognize their African ancestry, or their Indigenous ancestry. I Love when Mr. Gates educates and brings out ancestry that many have not known about. It shows that we are all truly connected.

Who told you that? Some people's ancestors are from Spain others from The Canary Islands others are indigenous & others are African. This kid didn't know his background that's not the same for every Spanish speaking person.

Off coast of Africa, the majority of the Cubans that came from Spain came from this part of Spain!

I'm kind of surprised that people are surprised that they have slaves in their ancestry. In Europe there was a time when almost every farmer belonged to their "noblemen". They had no other choice than working the farm and giving every surplus to "nobility". No matter your color, its highly likely that some of your ancestors weren't free. There is a reason why a lot of "nobility" ended on a guillotine.

at least here in Germany they were not slaves but serfs - the landlords owned the land (and the people belonged to the land and were not allowed to leave), but the people themselves were not property. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serfdom

@@heikekurtz2085fancy slaves are still slaves. If you cannot leave and are indentured 🤷🏽‍♀️. Also, plenty of German slaves throughout history. The Nores traded them.

@@realjohnlove Just like you can look at Obama, HL Gates, Latifah and tell they are European descended? Because really, in the Americas, what do mixed people look like? I'm not talking about looks, I'm talking about what we know, and this show's conscious decision to continue false narratives. We're mixed in the Americas.

And what Andres did is not a unique story in the history of colonization. Africans did the same and for the same reasons. Native Americans from North America did the same. Asians did the same. African Americans did the same. It's the only alternative offer they ever made you. And it was not a complete freedom. It was a kinda slavery/kinda freedom.

I don’t understand crying for ancestors. If you go far back enough you have THOUSANDS of great great great parents. You think all your ancestors out of those thousands had happy lives?

Some people love their ancestors and when hearing about their suffering feel that suffering too. It's not because you don't know you have lots of ancestors or that many of them had lived brutal lives. It is because they are no longer random. They have a story and that story is a part of you.

So because you lack empathy and emotional intelligence, others should feel the same way? Let people have their emotions, that's why we're all individuals. Maybe you don't have a sense of identity like they do.
