Excellent presentation Crista. Enjoyed listening to you on this same topic at RootsTech. I find dependency research on collateral lines especially important in corroborating information on my primary lines of inquiry.

Excellent presentation Crista. Question - When I do a Google search of a possible living relative, some of the hits will offer to provide a background report of the searched person (by companies such as Intelius, MyLife and Spokeo). I avoid these companies as I am not sure who these companies are. Do you have any opinion of these type of companies? One great source of information regarding possible relatives is LexisNexis but that is generally only available to people in certain professions. It would be great if Ancestry.com LLC entered into an agreement with LexisNexis to provide certain limited (i.e., non-private) information at a reasonable cost to Ancestry’s subscribers. I can always hope. Joe

The two resources I use most often for this type of living people information are: The Public Records Index, Vols 1 & 2. Both of these are databases that are part of the U.S. subscription. You can find them in the Ancestry Card Catalog to search them directly. The other resource I use (which is an additional subscription) is PeopleFinders.com. They often provide birth dates and other family members who live in the same household. Hope that helps! (Crista)

Great topic Crista. I have a question. You mentioned that you have identified (I can't remember the exact number) hundreds of your mother's and father's DNA matches by doing descendancy research. Do you mean they are showing up as shared ancestry hints in their DNA matches? Or are you including matches without trees?

LeeAnn - That includes matches without trees, or matches with only small trees, where I have been able to figure out who they are and how they fit into our family tree. (Crista)

I've been able to find out 1 definite connection with a cousin besides my second cousins that I know, my parents, and aunt.

Think outside the box? Is that what it is called, I have been using obituaries for several years, especially for post 1940 relatives, it is like getting inside the family, and I can add names so easily. Thanks Crista for letting my secret out!!! (LOL)
