I was there a time ago, I think I was told by guide that this pit was a pluviometer instead. Indeed, it has around a meter or so of water that time, so I couldn't see the bottom! Thanks for sharing this video, it was a great experience for me during 2015.

Fascinating place

I imagine they would put something heavy down in the bottom that the initiate would have to bring up. Carrying something heavy would force you to take the stairs and if you emerged with this stone everyone could be sure that you did indeed take the stairs instead of just swimming out.
