Nifo= Tooth/Teeth Nifo oti can be translated as 'Tooth of death' or 'Tooth at the end'. That curved axe looking part was for the head of the enemy to be hung from..different tribes or villages have their own version of the nifo oti.

Small might be better. This looks like the kind of weapon an armored knight would be afraid of. It looks like it really good at hooking and bashing, armored isn't really going to protect you from those two things. If it is small enough to wield one handed then you can have shield in the other. A small one of these wouldn't be out of place on a medieval battle field.

Funny enough the Samoan Nifo oti is one of the few Polynesian weapons that occasionally employed metal. It’s used today as the blade in fire knife competitions.

Mind you, some of the big poly units I would imagine would be quite comfortable with the weight and scale. Fijian clubs are really well designed, with a round/ bulb shaped tomahawk like a mallet, tucked in the waist, when thrown, travels through the air like a tomahawk. Fascinating, beautiful pieces.

oh hell yea a twohander :D

Some Samoan friends at work were saying it's considered a women's weapon..
@KoaStudio Жыл бұрын
Interesting, it’s the weapon used for fire knife competitions and was common for chiefs to to take photos carrying the piece along with the primary weapon used during the Samoan wars in the 1800s. Not sure I’ve ever seen it referenced as a women’s weapon but maybe.
@everlastingwingchundunedin4776 Жыл бұрын
Perhaps it has evolved to be known as a woman's weapon because there is a cultural dance performed by women..using the modern version of the weapon that used a steal blade originally designed from the European "whaler hook" tool... but now has being so closely associated with this ceremony that it is widely regarded as somthing women use...
@KoaStudio Жыл бұрын
It is often a ceremonial piece that is very true, but the most common use for the Nifo Oti today is fire knife competitions. Largest of which is held in Hawai’i at the Polynesian Cultural Center. Regardless it’s a powerful weapon that was traditionally used in combat which is my interest in it 🤙

Ki roto ki te Ao Maori te wā tāwhito we had taha tana taha wāhine,male female, same mana no difference, sometimes the mana came through the female lineage,I wouldn't be surprised if you Pacific whanau are similar to our kawa,our tīkanga.

I would suggest building a jig with a ramp and do it on the table saw and leave the part you want the teeth extra wide and saw off to the desired blade ridgeline i dont know im just thinking out loud here but i really like the video i have always loved making knifes but sometimes wouldnt have enough money to buy all the necessary supplies to make a decent knife so, living in the forests of the Pacific Northwest wood was always available and i can make them for almost no cost to me except a little sweat and blood i found a new love of making wooden war clubs and swords you do really good work im a fan

A table saw would be nice 😅

@brettpalmer1770 Жыл бұрын
Are there one handed version of this? I assuming it is a two handed weapon.
@KoaStudio Жыл бұрын
Traditionally it’s a two handed piece but yes you could make one small enough for one handed.
@Finding_Arcadia2 ай бұрын
Now that its been a year since, do you think youd do anything particularly different with how you made the teeth if you were to make another?
@KoaStudio2 ай бұрын
Good question. I don’t really make this style of teeth very often. So I don’t have a good pattern for doing it. I might do it differently… I might end up doing it the same 😅
