I had no idea that all the red on buff all came from the Snaketown locality. I kind of assumed it was made all over the core Hohokam area. Really interesting! Thank you!

Thanks, yes, this was a surprise even to many archaeologist when this fact was discovered. The more we learn about the ancient Southwest, the more it becomes obvious that their world was very interconnected and many aspects depended on a robust trade network.

My elementary school sat on top of a Hohokam settlement, there were even a couple of burial mounds that were eventually excavated by the local university thanks to me and my mother. The place was absolutely LITTERED with pottery sherds, I used to spend all recess hunting them and came home with both pockets full, my mom put them all in a big jar. The hardest to find was the buffware with red or black painting. My mom bought out the estate of a man who was the director of the Pueblo Grande for 30 years, got a ton of great stuff. He used to go out in the desert and pick stuff up before anyone cared. I bet you'd have fun going through it.

The fire clouds on that plainware seed jar toward the beginning are to die for! I wonder if the difference in vessel shapes between Hohokam and other groups may be partially attributable to the use of paddle-and-anvil, vs. coil-and-scrape--for instance, the "Gila Shoulder" and the outward-flaring bowl/plates (e.g. at 0:34, 1:05 & 1:18). Those are both shapes that are difficult to achieve with coil-and-scrape. Is there something about paddle-and-anvil that makes it easier to form those, either because the clay is drier when worked, because the clay is compressed, or if it is because of the technique itself? Maybe Tony could weigh in with his thoughts...

Hey Andy, I just picked up some of the Red iron oxide you have listed above. Would it be a good idea to just add some to my clay water before I dry it out for use? Or is it better to just add it as a slip when the clay is leather hard? (BTW the clay near me is brown and I want to see if it would make it more red throughout the pots I make?) Thanks.

If you add it to your clay body you will need a TON of pigment, although it can be done that way. I think it is much more economical to add it as a paint or slip. There are several different ways of doing that, one is shown in this video kzfaq.info/get/bejne/oc-pZMqT0t-2pZc.html My "Natural Pottery Paints, Slips & Pigments" masterclass covers a number of different possible uses ancientpottery.how/courses/natural-pottery-paints-slips-and-pigments/
