Full name: Ravi Shankar Sharma

Ravi was noted for his heart-touching, soft, melodious tunes, which made his songs and music immortal and is hummed even today, decades after he composed them. His music has always had great popular appeal because of its sweet, tuneful, poignant melodies, impressive harmonies and simple, delightful orchestrtation.
Ravi Shankar Sharma, known more commonly by his first name only, Ravi came from a humble background. He is a fine exemplar of how passion and talent can overcome all obstacles. Born on 3 March, 1926 in Delhi, young Ravi learned music from his father who had profound knowledge of classical bhajans. He worked as an electrician to support his famiy and learned to play the harmonium on his own.
After much struggle, in 1950 he shifted to Bombay aspiring to become a professional singer. In his initial days in the city, he was forced to live on the streets and would sleep at the Malad railway station. It was only in 1952 that Ravi was discovered by singer Hemant Kumar who gave him the opportunity to sing backing vocals in Vande Mataram from the film Anand Math (1952).
Ravi debuted as an independent music director for Vachan (1955). Ravi composed for Vachan what is amongst Hindi cinema’s most popular loris (lullabies) - “Chanda Mama Door Ke” and launched a successful career as a music director.
Among his popular numbers are 'Chaudhvin Ka Chand Ho', 'Tora Man Darpan Kahlaye', 'Baar Baar Dekho Hazaar Baar Dekho' in Shammi Kapoor-starrer China Town (1962), 'Dil Ke Aarman Aansuon Me Bah Gaye' from Nikaah (1982) and 'Milti Hai Zindagi Mey Mohabbat Kabhi Kabhi' from the 1968 movie Aankhen starring Dharmendra and Mala Sinha.
Apart from the Hindi film industry, he also composed music for Malayalam films, credited as Bombay Ravi. He worked a lot with the eminent Malayalam film director Hariharan, who also played a very big role in coaxing Ravi for his comeback. Ravi was a constant in Hariharan’s films and their team was considered as one of the best ever in the Malayalam film industry. Although brief, his work for Malayalam films was appreciated. In fact, it was for his work in two Malayalam films - Parinayam (1994) and Sukrutham (1994), that Ravi won his only National Film Award for Best Music Direction.
He passed away on 7 March 2012 at the age of 86.
Veteran music composer Ravi has moved court against his son Ajay and daughter-in-law, actress Varsha Usgaonkar, alleging harassment.
Ravi says they are after his bungalow in Mumbai’s Mira Baug Colony. “They have forcefully moved into my house and are harrasing my family. I’ve filed several police complaints but nothing helped,” Ravi, who composed hit songs such as

रविजी का संगीत पूर्व जन्म का ज्ञान और लगाव है । इस जन्म मे चरम सीमा पर पहुंच चुकी दिखाई देती है । जींस घर में दादा -दादी, नाना -नानी नहीं होते, वहां बच्चे बड़े होकर भी ‌, बड़ों से कैसे ‌रहना, नहीं सिख पाते इसलिए बहुत ही लाने समय ध्यान रखते हैं । कहीं बच्चा रास्ता भुल जाये तो बहुत परिवार तुटने ना दे । आप को अगर बुढ़ापे में साज मिल जाता तो हमें बहुत खुबसूरत उम्र ढलने के गीत मिले होते । भारत के‌ सितारें नहीं, खुद। भारत की आत्मा है आप भारत में फिर आएंगे ।

Ravi Sahab was a Gem of a Person. I'm also 64 years old and I have 3 Sons. Both of my elder sons had never contributed in this of old age. Younger one seems to be very kind, although he is unmarried yet and studying. I will also think twice before giving anything to both of my elder sons. Now I have bit faith on younger one. What a tragedy, a man who composed "Tujhe Suraj kahoon ya Chanda..." was so embittered with his son at the time of death! This song is very very special simply because there is No other song like this in entire music industry. Only a father can feel its emotions.

RAVI gave music as a MD in his first fil VACHAN. He gave many memorable songs durin the 60s when SJ were ruling the roost. Sad to hear his family story when he was an old man.

Ravi ji was indeed a great music director. he was different from others. i think he was the uncrowned king of Hindi films.he is one and the only one of his kind.

रवि साब,एक नायाब रत्न थे,अच्छे संगीत कर होने के साथ साथ अच्छे इंसान भी थे,परन्तु,इतने महान संगीतकार के अंतिम क्षणों को सुनकर व्यथित हूं,सोचता हूं जिस ने अपने पिता के साथ ऐसा वर्ताव किया,वो सचमुच इंसान तो नहीं हो सकता,,रवि साब को हार्दिक नमन

निश्चित ही रवि साहब ने फिल्मों के सबसे खूबसूरत गीतों की रचना की,वो भी कम से कम वाद्य यंत्रों के इस्तेमाल के ! ऐसे गायकों से भी कालजयी गाने गवा दिए कि विश्वास नहीं होता! इसके गीतों से एक अजीब सा रूहानी सुकून मिलता है! ऐसे कालजयी संगीतकार को शत् शत् नमन 🙏🙏

Although our Hindi film music is brimming with unsurpassed music composers, but composer Ravi has a different place among them. How beautiful a song can be made in simplicity, it was the specialty of Ravi Saheb, which is still leaving its mark on the hearts of music lovers. I am a fan of all music composers but, Ravi Sahab's place is different Our tribute...🌿
