Omkar Prasad Nayyar (16 January 1926 - 28 January 2007) was an Indian film music director and composer.
O. P. Nayyar started his career as a movie music composer by composing the background score for the movie Kaneez (1949). He composed music for Guru Dutt's Aar Paar (1954), Mr. & Mrs. '55 (1955), C.I.D. (1956), and Tumsa Nahin Dekha (1957). He composed music for Phir Wohi Dil Laya Hoon and Mere Sanam.
O. P. Nayyar died on 28 January 2007 through cardiac arrest. He is survived by his wife, three daughters, and a son.
c. He added so much fun and quality to Hindi music in the 50s and 60s.Without a basic musical background Nayyar Sahib created immortal melodies .Genius crown deservedly his !
O.P. Nayyar, the untrained musical genius who was more than just a hit machine
He was decidedly the biggest in commercial clout among the musically untrained composers of his times. But Omkar Prasad Nayyar, or O.P. Nayyar as he is known to the world, was much more than just a “hit” machine. His compositions had wide variety and amazing depth.
Young Omkar was born in Lahore (in undivided India) on 16 January 1926. He mastered the harmonium and joined All India Radio (AIR) as a singer. Most of the songs he sang there were his own compositions, and in 1943, he composed “Preetam aan milo” with idol Kundan Lal Saigal in mind. His family of professionals did not appreciate his love for music, though Nayyar was paid Rs 40 for recording the song in Saigal clone C.H. Atma’s voice.
Nayyar also had some other trysts with music at AIR but later lived and worked for a while in Patiala and Delhi. And as he himself put it to me, he would teach poor children music on a harmonium while struggling to meet ends in Mumbai.
The composer, incredibly for someone who had never learnt classical music formally, made his debut with the film Kaneez (1949) as background music director. Producer Dalsukh Pancholi introduced him as composer in Aasmaan (1952). “Though named Aasmaan or sky, it crashed and I was brought down to earth!” Nayyar had quipped.
It took Guru Dutt’s Aar Paar (1954) to not only show Nayyar’s prowess as composer but begin his innings as a name to reckon with. Mr & Mrs 55 (1955), also from Dutt, was his next hit-fest. And then, more often than not, Nayyar was about hit scores rather than songs.
In the ’50s, his famous chartbusters included Asha Bhosle-Kishore Kumar’s “Piya piya piya” (Baap Re Baap), Asha’s “Aaiye meherbaan” and Geeta Dutt’s “Mera naam Chin Chin Chu” (Howrah Bridge), Mohammed Rafi’s “Raat bhar ka hai mehmaan andhera” (Sone Ki Chidiya), Kishore-Shamshad Begum’s “Meri neendon mein tum” and Asha-Rafi’s “Ek pardesi mera dil le gaya” (Phagun).
Not for nothing was Nayyar considered the biggest threat to Shankar-Jaikishan’s supremacy by the late 1950s, and C.I.D. (1956) became the first Hindi film to gross a lakh rupees. In 1957, a Times of India headline termed him the main reason for the blockbuster success of Naya Daur and legend has it that B.R. Chopra never worked with Nayyar again for this “egoistic” reason, though each song of the film was a hit.

रफ़ी साहब ने सच कहा कि शंकर जयकिशन जी के रेकॉर्डिंग में हुई रीटेक के कारण वे देर से पहुंचे. इसी बात से नैय्यर साहब को ग़ुस्सा आ गया. अगर रफ़ी साहब ट्रैफिक जाम का बहाना करते तो शायद बात बन जाती. रफ़ी साहब को माफ़ी माँगने का मौका तक नही दिया नैय्यर साहब ने. इस घटना को लेकर रफ़ी साहब तो उदास थे ही , लेकिन नैय्यर साहब को भी अपने बर्ताव को लेकर पछतावा हुआ. उन्होंने इसका ज़िक्र अपने दोस्तों के साथ किया. उन्ही दोस्तों ने नैय्यर साहब के पछतावे के बारे में रफ़ी साहब से कहा. रफ़ी साहब को इसी बात का इंतज़ार था और वो सीधे नैय्यर साहब के घर चले गए. एक दूसरे से गले मिले और दोनों की आँखें भर आई. नैय्यर साहब ने कहा " रफ़ी साहब आप जीतने बड़े गायक हो उससे बड़े इनसान हो". उन दोनो के बीच की दूरी तो मिट गई लेकिन नैय्यर साहब के पैरों तले ज़मीन खिसक चुकी थी. आशा जी ने उसी समय नैय्यर साहब का साथ छोड़ दिया था. नैय्यर साहब ने महेंद्र कपूर जी, मुकेश जी, वाणी जयराम जी जैसे क़ाबिल गायकों से गाने गवाए लेकिन उनके संगीत में वो जादू नही रह गया था जो रफ़ी साहब, आशा जी के गानों में होता था. यही सच्चाई है. रफ़ी साहब नैय्यर साहब के घर पहुंचना और दोनो का भावुक होना...... ये सारी बातें नैय्यर साहब ने 20 साल पहले विविध भारती रेडीयो चैनल को दिए गए एक लंबी इंटरव्यू में विस्तार से कही है.

ओ पी नैयर के सभी गाने वाह क्या बोलूँ सब गाने सुपर डुपर हिट होते थे मुझे नैयर सर का संगीत पसंद था अलग अंदाज के गाने होते थे किसीके सामने न झुकने वाला पहेले गवाया होगा मालूम नहीं है बाद में लत्ता मंगेशकर को भी नहीं गवाया फिर भी बहोत अच्छे गाने सुपर डुपर हिट वाह आज भी हमारे दिल में रहते हैं ओ पी नैयर सर 🙏🎹🎵🎹

सलाम, क्या कहे इस संगीतकार को, किस तरह से तारीफ करे, हमारे शब्द भी कम पड़ते है. बहुत ही दिल की चोट खाया हुआ शख्स था, जो संसार को इतनी नायाब संगीत सिर्फ ये ही दे सकते थे, नैयर साहब आपको भगवान/खुदा स्वर्ग/जन्नत आपको दे, मुंबई।

ओपी.साहब व रफी साहब के बीच की अनबन की बात व उसके बाद रफी साहब का उनके घर सेवई लेकर खुद जाना उनकी महानता दिखाता है। पर उसके बाद ओपी. साहब का अपने आत्मसम्मान (या यूँ कहें कि गुस्से ) को सेवई का तोहफा रफी साहब से लेकर, जिस तरह से ठंडा कर लिया। अच्छा लगा। मैं तो इन दोनों महान हस्तियों का चाहने वाला हूँ ।

O P Nayyar sahab was the man of principal. Nayyar sahab logo ki hesiyat dekhkar baat nahi kerte thhe, wo sabke ke saath ek jaisaa behaviour karte thhe, chhote bade kaa bhed nahi karte thhe. Onkaar Prasad Nayyar sahab me itni politeness bhi thi ki unhone ek baar ye kahaa ki meri success me Rafi kaa 100% contribution hai.

I was honored when I got a chance to speak to this great legend, just two years before he left this world. I asked him about this mishap with the great Rafi Saab. He briefly told me that he regrets two things in his life which he said, even his Creator won't forgive him. One was his anger, which he had no control over it. Second, the worst day of his life when he got upset and angry at Rafi Saab. He said that was the main reason of his downfall. "I literally broke Rafi Bhai's heart he reiterated and for that I don't forgive myself", my Bhagwan cursed me that day, he said.

@@SS-si8dj But too much of anything is bad. In the song Piya piya piya mora jiya pukare Kishore Kumar repeated a line on his own at the recording for which co-singer Asha was not prepared. She had just began "ho-o" when Kishoreji hinted to stop. And this snag was not removed, nor there was rerecording. Because it was not OPs nature to rerecord a song more than once.

OP Nayyar की खासियत था, पंजाबी boldness. उनके सारे गायक गायिकाएं बोल्ड आवाज़ वाले थे और संगीत भी बोल्ड था।

संगीत और गायन का सीधा सीधा सम्बन्ध इश्वरीय स्तुति और भक्ति से है,,जो धर्म पर चलने वाले होते हैं उन्हे ही माता सरस्वती का आशीर्वाद मिलता है,,और मोहम्मद रफी साहिब का मानवता और मानव धर्म के प्रति एक अलग ही तरह का दरियादिल नजरिया था जो उन्हे आज भी गायकी मे शीर्ष पद पर नियुक्त किए हुए है,,मेरा मानना है कि मोहम्मद रफी साहिब और लता मंगेशकर जी की किसी भी गायक गायिका से तुलना करना मूर्खतापूर्ण वक्तव्य होगा!!यह वह आवाजें हैं कि जब भी सुनेंगे इन्हें ,,आज या दस हज़ार वर्ष बाद भी दिल ये कहेगा कि तुम मेरे आसपास ही हो रफी और लता जी!!!आप दोंनो बहुत ही महान आत्मायें थी!!और इस महान दौर और इस युग के हम लोग हमेशा साक्षात्कार रहेंगे और यह हम लोंगो का सोभाग्य भी है!!!

His voice quality, versatility, range, control, sweetness and diction was such that it suited all actors for whom he sang effortlessly as their playback singer and thus he gelled with every single master composer he sang for - from Naushad, Madan Mohan, Roshan, Ghulam Mohamad, SD Burman to Ravi, Chitragupt, C Ramchandra, Shankar Jaikishan and every other music director who mattered. महान मौसीकार ओ पी नय्यर साहब आज हमारे बीच नही है , इस महान मौसीकार को विनम्र अभिवादन और श्रद्धा सुमन अर्पित करता हू,.. एक हटके और नशीला संगीत देनेवाला महान संगीतकार... ये प्रकृती का नियम है की हर इन्सान के स्वभाव के अलग अलग गुण होते है , जो किसीभी तरह से टाले नही जा सकते,. स्वाभिमान ये उनका एक गुण था , जिससे समझोता करना उनके लिये नामूमकिन था , वैयक्तिक कुछ गुण छोडे तो उनका महान कार्य ये है की आदरणीय आशाजी को महान गायिका बनानेमे उनका योगदान अमूल्य है.. और इस योगदान को हिंदी फिल्म जगत और हम सभी कभी नही भूल पायेंगे.. विजय जी रफी साहबका आपने जो किस्सा सुनाया उसमे उनकी महानता और इन्सानियत दिखती है Rafi sahab was a man in God and God in man.., एक गायकी का सम्राट खुद चलके अपने रिश्ते पुनः जीवित रखनेके ओ पी नय्यर साहाबके घर जाना और दोनोने एक दुसरेको देखकर रोना ये भी इन्सानि जीवन और स्वभावका पैलू है,.. कभी कभी हम सोचते ये क्या कर दिया हमने... हमे ऐसा नही करना था. वक्त वक्त की बात होती है, किस वक्त इन्सान से कौनसी कृती करेगा इसका पूर्व आकलन इन्सान नही कर सकता . संसारमे जितने व्यक्ती उतनीही प्रवृत्तीया रहती है.. इन्सानि जीवन एक अजिब चीज है , कभी इन्सान आसमान की बुलंदिया छू लेता तो कभी उसके दिल के टुकडे टुकडे हो जाते और वो जिंदगीमे पुरी तरह टूट जाता... इन्सान जो सोचता वैसा कभी नही होता और बनने और बिघडनेका खेल निरंतर शुरु रहता... विजय जी आपने ओ पी नय्यर साहाबकी जिंदगीसे जुडी बाते साझा की उनके मशहूर गितोंकी चंद लाईने सुनायी आपका बहोत बहोत शुक्रिया... स्क्रिप्ट अच्छी... 👍🌹🙏..

Nayyar Sahib's compositions were mesmerizing.He could give very adorable songs with singers other than Rafi; but it can not be denied that it was Rafi who had the magical voice to convert these gud songs to great songs.Not a single mediocre song when these two came together. Ek Musaffir Ek Haseena, Kashmir ki Kali are examples of films with one great song following the other.

Urdu ki chaashni me jab OPN sb ki dhuno ko sharabor kiya gaya to paida hue vo sada bahaar amar naghme jo hamaare dil o damaagh me"Golden Era" Banker sama gae. Sochiye urdu se judaai hamare liye itni ghaatak siddh hui ki uske baad ka koi geet zinda na rah saka. Aise video me urdu ka zikra na hona dard deta hai. Sargam aur urdu ka ye milan kisi muslim mulk tak ko bhi naseeb nahin tha . Kisi ke paas Lucknowi urdu nahin thi to kisi ke paas sargam nahin tha . Jis din urdu apne ghar se nikaali gai, bahut durbhagaya ka din tha. Ek ghar me kai bahne rahti hain.Bahut pyara programm hai. Pyaar aur mubarakbad.Tears for khuddaar OPN. I am 71 plus and lived and cherished the golden era of Hindi film music. There were at least dozen plus super music genius directors , but OP Nyyar ji stood apart with unmatchable distinct melody to date. His songs will stand like our Epics for time immemorial. My respectful नमस्कार
