Today’s episode is all about J-Hope, the dance captain in BTS known for his rapping.
In this series I analyze the Korean speaking of the music group BTS (방탄소년단). As a Korean teacher I’ll share my opinions on how each member sounds, what dialect they use (if any), as well as any unique expressions, and their personalities while speaking Korean.

Considering J-hope’s dad’s a teacher, J-hope’s wide vocab makes sense. 🥰 Edit to add: I would LOVE a breakdown of BTS’s song 팔도강산 at the end of this series. I think it would be a great cherry on top to wrap up the series.

Hobi is just King of Vocalizations... in addition to using filler words frequently, he frequently provides his own sound effects to day-to-day life (which is just adorable). And yes, he's a walking ball of solar energy a lot of the time, but you just need to read his lyrics to know he's got a serious side as well (and a shadow side). It's also just as likely Hobi picked up his dialect from his peers-- he started at a dance school in like 5th grade and joined Neuron (a street dance crew in Gwangju) at around 14. The school was an hour away by bus, and sometimes he'd spend so long practicing that he'd crash at a friend's place instead of going home.

J-hope is my ult bias and I find it interesting that he uses "사실" as a filler word because, if I'm being honest it kind of reminds me of how I tend to use the word "honestly" or phrases like, "to tell the truth" and "to be honest" when I'm speaking. It actually some people crazy how often I use them, if I'm being honest, but it's honestly just how I speak, and I think that's really cool that me and Hobi have that in common especially since now I know what word to use in place of all my "honestly" when I'm speaking korean

I love how his speech matches his personality! But you're right, Jhope is a bit serious, I can notice it when he goes live alone (which he has done often recently), he seems to be a bit quieter than his persona he shows for cameras and TV. That's why I'm glad they're getting this time to go solo, he can be himself. Maybe when they reunite everyone will be more comfortable to be themselves, we don't know that but that's why I hope.

This is seriously such a good series! It's fun, bc I'm a big fan of BTS, but I also just think that analyzing native speakers' way of speaking as individuals is one of the best ways to really get to know a language. It's informative in ways a normal "standard" class just can't cover. The choices you make as an individual in any language are the biggest part of how you sound, and getting a fuller snapshot like this (esp since they're from different regions) is so so cool! Thank you for making this series! I'd honestly watch more of these about groups I don't even know! (although I'm sure they're v time intensive to make so I don't imagine you'd want to do them all the time 😅)

I'm not sure that J-Hope was a good student but living in a home with a literature teacher must have had an effect on his language. His dialect, however, is more likely to have come from his school friends and the street crew he danced with. I presume that, Jimin, one of the Busan boys, will be next. Although he doesn't use his Busan satoori much these days that should be interesting.

First here!!! Thank you so much for running this series. It's so interesting. I think besides K-pop, maybe analyzing some current or classic K-drama characters may also be interesting. For example, I am very new to Korean, but currently watching Kokdu: Season of Deity and I find it fascinating. While I can't understand the words, I can tell his character is extremely comical, especially in the way he speaks. At first, it was strange and a bit annoying to hear, but after a few episodes, it sounds more endearing. I just realized a moment ago that Korean is basically constant code switching on hard mode. I code switch a lot from AAVE to standard English, so I guess I understand the dialect thing, but the words being switched to be more honorific is something that always has me fighting for my life. I’m also learning Chinese and you also sometimes switch out words to sound more honorific but not to the extent that korean does. Really makes you hyperaware of your position in life relative to others

Hello, I'm curious to know if something I've noticed JHope doing is cultural or simply a personal habit of his...maybe you will know. When someone is speaking to JHope, he is a very "active" or "vocal" listener. He doesn't interrupt necessarily but he is usually making a sound after every sentence or during any pause in the other's speech . You may not have seen enough clips to notice, but if so, is this common or just a Jhope thing? Lastly, I've heard his father teaches Korean also. Would you have known that from the way JHope speaks or the vocabulary he uses? Thanks so much! I am really enjoying your BTS videos.

I think the reason he speaks standard Korean to his father is that his father is literature teacher, who is likely speaking standard Korean. So J-hope picked his dialect from other people in Gwangju.

Love this series! Ahh, looking forward to the others too :D I presume some of Tae's fillers are 이제 & 약간 lol It's a shame that celebrities have to assimilate by speaking standard Korean, it'd be amazing if they could freely keep their satoori. However, I'm aware that it would be harder for the masses to understand so I understand why they do it, yet it is unfortunate.
