UPDATE: I've now released my own grenadine! Check it out 👉 beveragemixers.com/products/g...
It’s time for a grenadine showdown! For years I’ve used my homemade grenadine syrup behind the bar - so when I started receiving requests for store-bought grenadine recommendations, I knew it was time to sample some commercial brands side-by-side. I decided to do this in three rounds - on their own, in a Shirley Temple, and mixed into a simple cocktail with a full-flavored Jamaican rum and lime juice. I was surprised at how the bottles differed with each application!
If you still want to make your own homemade grenadine, check out my easy recipe in the syrups video ( • 4 EASY to Make Cocktai... ).
For more on the history of grenadine, here are a few fascinating articles that have stirred up some recent conversations on the syrup’s true origins:

Shots of sugar anyone? What I really like to see in grenadine is tartness that can hold up in cocktails and offers more than just sweetness. Do you have a favorite grenadine you swear by? Side note: These are my preferences, but I encourage you to experiment and form your own opinion around what works best for you!

For me (probably because of locality) it's Joaquin's. I was actually really surprised to see it absent from your list. Speaking of Joaquin's, have you ever heard of or used Kummel? What I love about this video is that grenadine was the very first syrup I encountered making cocktails where I questioned the quality. My Bols Grenadine (Europe) seemed to overpower the cocktails with candy sweetness. Short of a good "real" option, it looks like homemade in small batches is the way to go.

@Praephyr 3 жыл бұрын
Well actually the first grenadine was made with pomegranates but it was "replaced" (at least here in France) with a combination of red fruits with lemon juice. That's why I was confused to see you using pomegranate for your homemade. Also if you are interested about various syrups, you can go take a look at all the Monin syrups, it can be worth the time. Edit: checked on their site, they have a pomegranate syrup

Interesting note on "natural flavors": I work for an environmental consulting firm and while doing work at a plant that processed pine trees, I learned that pine oil distillates were used to make "natural cherry flavors" The site was so disgusting to work on that I won't touch any cherry flavored food item unless its an actual cherry. It wouldn't surprise me if it's what's used in the bookend Grenadines.
@swirlingabyss
@swirlingabyss 9 ай бұрын
Do you know the only difference between a natural and artificial flavor? The source, and only the source. You can have the same chemical, but if it was extracted from a plant or animal, it's natural. If it was synthesized, it's artificial, even if they're the same final product.

Thanks for this public service! Very useful, really. I checked the label of the Monin "Grenadine" at my grocery store the other day, and there is no pomegranate in it. Here in Brazil I think they are required to list more information on the label, and it said there's 10% fruit juice, from various berries. You could just look at the front of the label, that's what's in it. IIRC it's like blackcurrant, raspberry and blackberry (and maybe elderberries? not sure), plus vanilla.

I just made your recipe, and enjoyed a beverage while watching this taste test. (Yours is great, no question) I notice you keep saying "orange blossom water" in the tests, but your own recipe calls for rose water. Did you mean that, or are all the others adding the other instead?

Is it generally possible to replace a simple syrup in a cocktial with a grenadine or an orgeat? I made your homemade syrups and I want to get as much use as possible

I don't know which is more impressive, the amount of grenadine he drank or the fact he's got 7 shakers on hand.

Do you think maybe you could boost the visual appeal of the homemade grenadine with a bit of hibiscus syrup? You might be able to dispense with the rosewater and pick up your floral notes that way.

I have made my own Grenadine, but always turn back to Liber for convenience and taste. (Actually, I have all their syrups for convenience and taste)

Great content, funny, fine production, thanks. I made your grenadine recipe (with homemade juice from the fruit that was pretty hard work) and this is a great natural syrup, richer taste after a couple of days in the fridge. Regarding your homemade grenadine's browny dark color in this video, what would you suggest to get a more bright red color?
@AndersErickson
@AndersErickson 3 жыл бұрын
I've been thinking of incorporating some dried hibiscus to see if that would bump up the brightness/redness of the syrup - so that could be an option (haven't tried it yet, though). And Kudos for juicing your own pomegranates!

Did you pick out the individual seeds to make it? Or does just throwing a quartered pomegranate into a strong juicer work? Because I have a powerful juicer, and I would love making this from scratch.

@@MrWhangdoodles First I removed all the seeds from the fruit's cavities, manually, bit long process. To make the juice from the seeds I tried 2 ways: 1. Put the seeds inside a ziploc bag, then crush it with something like a pan or a rolling pin, in order to get the juice in the bag. 2. Put the seeds in a blender and just blend a couple of times, only enough to get the juice apart from the seeds, then strain. This method #2 was much more quick and effective. There are some videos out there about making pomagranata juice from the scratch. Cheers

Interesting choice of a dark rum but you still got red color. I’ve experimented with that with Plantation 3 stars and Stirring and it was good but sweet. It was interesting with just a bit of orgeat too. Interestingly; Liber’s website has several restaurants in my neighborhood in downtown Chicago listed with their syrups but no retailers so they must like it to get it elsewhere.

I realize you’ll probably not see this but pomegranates (and by extension homemade grenadine) contains anthocyanins which is the same thing that makes cabbage purple. This substance acts as a universal indicator so as the PH changes the color changes. Drinks that are acidic will turn it more bright red then pink while basic drinks

thanks for the fun taste test. The only one I have tried other than Monin (which tastes like neon seventies' candy if that's a taste) is Jack Rudy (South Carolina company?) which is tart complex and delicious. I am in London so we can't find the others here I don't think - do you know how this compares to the ones you tried?
@AndersErickson
@AndersErickson 3 жыл бұрын
I haven't tried the Jack Rudy, but I really wanted to grab a bottle of that one as well - especially hearing that it's tart. That's the main thing I'm looking for in a grenadine, and all of these were much less tart than my homemade syrup. Love your neon seventies candy reference btw - completely get that!

I’m glad you mentioned Jack Rudy. I was looking for a grenadine as well for summer cocktails. I was looking for Liber & Co but the store (Total Wine) didn’t have it. Since I’m more of a bourbon drinker, I felt store bought was the better way to go versus making my own. Would really like to see you review Jack Rudy Anders. Great videos. Glad I came across them as I usually watch Steve the Bartender and How to Drink.
