In today's video we compare TWO Klon Centaurs against each other, and TWO Klon KTR, to see if the legendary pedal really is worth £4000! We also add a Wampler Tumnus to the mix to see how a more affordable pedal compares. | tinyurl.com/yjs8u3tt
» Wampler Tumnus V2 Drive Pedal | tinyurl.com/yh7jueyq
» Wampler Tumnus Deluxe Guitar Pedal | tinyurl.com/yz7bo34f
Other gear used in the video:
» Heritage H-535 Semi-Hollow in Antique Natural | tinyurl.com/yghocgja
» Fender Engine Room LVL12 Power Supply 230V UK | tinyurl.com/yjgqnuxw
» Victory V140 Super Duchess 100w Head | tinyurl.com/ygloxd9v
» Victory Widebody 1x12 75w Creamback-loaded Cab | tinyurl.com/yfrna73t
Klon Centaurs are now over £4000 and the Klon KTR is now reaching prices of up to £1500! So this begs the question, which is better and is there a difference between the two? We also compare 2 Klon Centaurs and 2 Klon KTR against each other to see if different versions of the same pedal sound the same. If that was not enough we also add to the mix the winner of our Ultimate Klon Pedal Blindfold Challenge, the legendary Wampler Tumnus, to see if a more reasonably priced pedal can stand up to the 2 giants.

I own one and it sounds great. I also own a Ceriatone Centura which I sold my silver version for Andertons Purple Danish Pete version cuz why not and Purple is cooler. That also sounds identical. Add a Cali 76 alà Chris Buck and you’re in tonal heaven. BUT, I have a to say….I’ve always owned a KTR and it had a ton of gain which you don’t normally hear in demos which made me think pedals like these come alive on expensive amps on stage really loud. I think John Mayer playing a Centuar with a TS-10 and some delay through a Two-Rock going through a Dumble Steel String Singer and a vintage Fender Bassman may bring out the best in the pedal. They have a lot of gain but I think Finnegan built them to push expensive amps to really good places or cause less worry when having to play a back line on a gig ( that’s a quote from a famous player I saw/read of Five Watt Worlds breakdown ) But if you want a Klon with a lot of gain especially if you stack drives try a KTR. They saw 4,400£ but lately I’ve seen Horsie Klons going for $7,800.

You really do have to give it to Wampler for matching the sound so well. I couldn't tell them apart at all. If it wasn't for the clicking of the switches, I wouldn't even know they were different pedals.
@OgamiItto70
@OgamiItto70 2 жыл бұрын
Agree. Through my computer on my headphones there was barely a difference between _any_ of the pedals with the Tele, and it was pretty ineffable anyway, and with that Heritage 335 (or whatever they call it) I couldn't hear any at all. That only leaves "feel," which is hard to grok from watching a video, but the guys in the room playing the guitars said there was barely any difference there, and even that was probably psychosomatic.

I bought a Tumnus after your last shootout, it's the pedal I didn't know I needed. From my hi-fi experience, a louder stereo system will sound better than a quieter one. The best thing to do is volume match the pedals before a comparison like this.

I bought a Klon back in 2005/6 used from a guy I know for $350. It sounded amazing then and it sounds amazing now. I have taken it off my board before someone steals and replaced it with the RYRA, which sounds fantastic. The Klon is a great, great sounding circuit, proven by the fact that there are so many excellent copies of it being made. Don't hate the originals just because they are overpriced, find the one that works for you and your budget.

I currently have a friend’s ktr on loan to check out. I was quickly able to match its tone with my MXR Sugar Drive, which was loosely based on the Klon. It doesn’t hurt that the Sugar Drive was designed by Jeorge Tripps. I did two tests- one into the clean channel, and one into the dirty channel of my Orange Rockerverb 50 Mkii. It was surprisingly easy to match the tones to where I couldn’t tell them apart while having my son switch between them while not looking. What a great era for gear

I'll need to go back and watch the original video. I remember the Way Huge Conspiracy Theory did pretty well. As I own one I thought "good enough." But I got a Mythos Mjolnir, and the mid profile is very different. I like them both but then really do have different flavors. And now thanks to you, I've tried stacking them and realized there is no such thing as too much of a good thing.

I picked up the Tumnus Deluxe just because of the other video because I wanted something a little different. I love the thing, lots of range on it. I didn't instantly love it, had to play with it and kind of chew it over, but yeah, found some settings that I dig. Reminded me of some older pedals, that's why I like it. Not so spikey and harsh, yet very well built and not stupidly priced. Cheers.

I can hear subtle differences, and it is harder to tell without a looper. However, I come away with the impression that there's hardly anything any of them can do that another can't be adjusted to sound like. If you dimed them all, they'd presumably come out slightly different; but most Klon users don't do that. With the first two KTRs, the first sounded warmer. The two silver Klons sounded really similar to me. In a different shootout with no real Klons, I thought I liked the Tumnus best. It was a bit brighter than the others without being unbalanced. I'm glad to hear here that it's EXTREMELY similar.

I've always said, the Klon is a really great overdrive pedal, but what it is not is the Holy Grail of overdrive pedals, so if the Klon sound is what you want, and you are not a collector of rarified objets, then the Wampler Tumnus is going to give you that sound, as will any number of other clones of the Klon Centaur circuit, like the tc electronic Zeus, for a lot less money than even the Tumnus. The differences between them all are very minor and the differences between different examples from the same maker will exhibit about as wide a variation as different examples from different makers. The biggest drawback of the Centaur is its gigantic size. Who wants to waste that much pedalboard space, when you can get the exact same sound out of a mini pedal? The only reason I don't use a Centaur clone is because I already own multiple overdrive pedals I think sound as good or better than the Centaur. I think the tc electronic MojoMojo sounds better than the Klon Centaur, and I paid $30 used for my MojoMojo.

I have a boutique Klon clone built into a vintage ampeg enclosure. It’s a great drive, but honestly it sounds a minuscule shade different from my nutube tubescreamer. If I never discovered the internet, I probably wouldn’t have really thought anything special of the Klon, just a good overdrive. I don’t seem to notice transparency or haunting mids - if anything the Klon seems to have more girth, more low end perhaps? Not especially important if you plug in humbuckers, I run into many situations where I am trying to dial back bass anyways

The Wampler is a cool pedal and in isolation I can seen why the extra bottom end means that people will often prefer it to more accurate Klones. For me though,the way I use a Klon(e) it isn't as good in a band mix - it's too bassy and the bottom strings get flabby. I dig my RYRA Klone which is pretty close to the Klon I owned, not stupidly expensive and not as big as the Centura which maybe the closest I've heard to an original.

i just bought a KTR and a King of Tone V4. I'm excited to shoot them out, and then likely stack them. The Tumnus sounds great and very close, but (a very big but) will always go down or stay the same in value. The Klon and KTR will only continue to go up. As I've bought gear, traded gear, and accumulated far more gear than I can physically use at one time I've realized at some point you have to start looking at your gear as the investment it is.

The Tumnus Deluxe extra EQ makes it a no-brainer. Worth a few extra quid.

Already happy with my EHX Soul Food but I clicked this for the inevitable tasty Pete jams.

There is clearly some reverb on here as well. Is that the reverb from the Victory amp directly?

Can't go wrong with a Tumnus! I've got two, the mini and a deluxe.

Do you prefer the mini or the deluxe?

@@south_of_nowhere The Tumnus Deluxe gives more tone shaping abilities, so I prefer that. But if board space is an issue, the mini does great too!

Now that you have these you should totally abuse them and make another video (or maybe even two because why not 😂) videos doing the same thing except with the gain set low and the gain set high. I don't think anyone would complain for getting to listen to awesome tone while having fun not being able to tell them apart (well, unless you actually can, but I doubt it). Anyways, great and fun video as always 🙂

Without a blindfold it easy to hear that the second to last klon is best.. with a blindfold is a totally different thing

I think a point was missed here. You'll 100% hear the differences when stacking the Klons (Klones) with other overdrive pedals (TS / BB Style). That said, the wampler tumnus is by far the best choice for the money.

Nice comparison video but - Good lord I could listen to Pete play the guitar for hours. Everything he plays is so tasty.

There is a little thing about pedal order and buffers. You should've had used Quartermaster to isolate other pedals out of the loop and their buffers and that effecting other pedals. My 2 cents.

Do them against a J Rockett Archer. J Rockett pedals are absolutely awesome and particularly the Touch pedal and they go GREAT with a Vox.

Hello again from the bastard now unruly disrespected step child (the USA) ... wonderful video and thanks for the original blind shootout which caused me to but three of the mini Tumnus ... when I closed my eyes picked the Wampler virtually every time ❗
