A note on recording Tommy's guitar: All the sound you hear from Tommy's guitar in this video comes from the pickup system in his Maton, recorded via the Direct Input on the AER Compact 60 (discussed at 54:35 - link in description). You may have noticed the microphone in front of the soundhole but it may not come as a surprise to learn that that's not particularly effective when there's a cover over the soundhole. Tommy covers the soundhole so he can get the most out of the microphone pickup by cranking it up (explained at 58:30).

MorbidManMusic I know it’s a bluegrass/old school guy thing that “pickups are bad”. I’m a bluegrass player too. But this pickup sounds just fine. Tommy wasn’t about to take the strings off his guitar and take the soundhole cover out, nor should he have. There’s plenty of footage of his raw guitar, mic’d up.

Saw Tommy in a Pub, well known for it's music, in an Irish town called Boyle. It's not the biggest town in the world but that night every guitar player in a 40 mile radius was in the first 10 rows. The guy is an awesome player, but so humble. The highlight was when some wag shouted "can you do anything Irish", and Tommy pauses a moment then says "I can blow up yer car mate!". After a short stunned silence everyone fell about the place laughing. You have to have a personality to get away with that!

When my son was 6 years old I took him to see Tommy, when he made an appearance in Blackpool, UK. We sat right at the front and Tommy regularly smiled at my son during the concert. Towards the end of the evening he addressed my son directly and dedicated a song to him, as by now it was very late in the evening but my son was still full of life and enjoying the gig. He said something along the lines of "this is for the little lad at the front, so he can remember the time when Tommy Emmanuel played two songs at once." Tommy then played Dixie/Yankee Doodle Dandy, both melodies simultaneously!!! What a guy and what a superb artist.

20 years ago, I was shredding away, and this guy asked if I wanted to buy Tommy Emmanuel tickets, for about £8.......I said who.... ..oh go on then. Never heard of him, never liked acoustic as it was “inferior” to my shred......never heard his stuff. We went to an awful run down venue, take your own cans of beer, and out he came. I laughed for 2 hours, not at his jokes (which were funny), but because I was completely mind blown, I could not believe what I was seeing and hearing, and laughing was my body’s way of saying “holy mother of Jesus Jeffrey’s Jones” ........ I bought the tab book after the gig, still got it. I then proceeded to play electric for another 20 years, and now, I have grown up. I am now totally focussed on Tommy, and will dedicate the next 20 years to this amazing music. I always listened to Tommy since that day, and always rated him as the best guitar player. I really struggled with his stuff, but now we have you tube and power tabs and so on.....I’ve got a chance ! The dude is my hero.

The best is always relative and music is subjective and the spectrum in music is so broad that with 1 single instrument you can have hundreds of specialists in styles. The only thing you can see is the easier it looks ( When performing a very hard to impossible musical piece ) the harder that person has put work into the skill ( In practicing hours ). But Tommy Emmanuel is one of the top guitarists for sure ( Seeing his experience and still to this day practicing every day ).

@@jimmycampbell78 my problem with him? It’s very simple really, he comes across as his own biggest fan. He can’t stop talking about himself, which I know is the point of the interview, but literally he will yatter on for ages once asked a question. Having watched endless interviews with all sorts of players, in my opinion he is just a big head. Technically he’s great on an acoustic guitar, but technically gifted doesnt make a ‘great’ player in my humble opinion. Personally I’d rather listen to the Captain play. It’s just my opinion, I respect yours is different, as I’m sure you do mine. Not sure arrogance is good in anyone.

@@Racelinekarting Honest question. How much do you know about Tommy Emmanuel? I couldn't disagree with your comment more lol. He's literally (I'm not speaking figuratively here) the humblest person I know. The amount of time he dedicates to his fans before shows, after shows, signing autographs and guitars and doing workshops and fundraisers all for free and truly enjoys spreading music and guitar as much as he can. I'm guessing you don't know much about him with your comment that he's great on an "acoustic guitar" when he grew up playing the drums and the electric guitar (which is much easier to play than an acoustic on many different levels).

I've had the privilege of seeing Tommy in person 3 times. Twice in Waco,Texas and once in Colorado Springs,Colorado. A noticeable atmosphere develops at his performances. He truly shares himself while playing. And if the audience MOJO is up, he senses it and man, hang on to something. It's on then. That guy will blow you away.

what an amazing person he is. Tommy is probably one of the finest acoustic guitar player, if not the finest (maybe ever): simple chords, simple melodies and loads of feel. Instead of putting so much effort into creating some nonsense rythmic structures, with unusual harmonies, he's always for the song and the melody. And his songs are absolutely killer to play.
