I agree 100%! The rumblings of war with the Romulans was clear and the stage was set for an EPIC season(s). The novelization was pretty good as well. The lore says they lacked visual communication technology, it was dodgy at best when new and fresh but doesn't really hold water even before ENT came along with its obvious visual communication technology. Shran's family goes on to serve in Starfleet its implied in STO. The son or grandson commands a ship at the Battle of Starbase One against the Klingons. There could still be a Shran serving by the 24th century. STO implies the Shran family have always been starship officers. They could be a Starleet family the children always following in their parents footsteps encouragement and serving. FED patriots I guess.

I would strongly suspect that Romulans being Vulcan-like was ultimately known to Star Fleet, but became sealed information. Vulcan being terribly important to the Coalition and then the Federation. Humans also having more than one complex about the Vulcans, and also more than a little xenophobia in general. An observation on the Vulcan side of things; well, Vulcans believing that following certain principles being necessary to be "Vulcan". The idea becoming one of culture more than biology. I would hypothesize that this curtailed the growth of Vulcan colonies considerably. The idea of rogue colonies splitting off and diverging being anathema; which is interesting considering the concept of "IDIC". But the very real presence of Romulans as a side branch might have underscored the importance of rigidity, the end of Vulcan hegemony and the rise of the Federation and Star Fleet. Keeping info sealed, and such an extensive policy of containment of the Romulans might have been the price for Vulcan to join and cooperate with the Federation?

@@neon920 Thanks for the comparison! It's a matter of interest why other races are so often hesitant to expand to colonies. I suspect that many races reject the idea. Vulcans had a big head start on local races, but have few known colonies. The Vulcan attitude to the children of Hellguard (if I recall the name) where Saavik originated from; and a recent viewing of a "Project Potemkin" adventure featuring a Vulcan colony set by the Preservers with a Vulcan ambassador rejecting the people there as "no more Vulcan than Romulans" made me realize how exacting Vulcan culture is, and how little tolerance the homeworld might have for alternative cultures to spring up.

This would imply the Federation was indeed a defense pact at least initially much as NATO is, despite TOS repeatedly stating that the Federation was not a military alliance but a group of planets United in their desire to explore. Of course, today we would probably assume the Federation is really a trade and mutual defense pact with Star Fleet as an united exploratory service, and civil securitt rather than a military service and hence had safeguards against being militarized or at least accountable to civilian oversight from the various governments in the Federation.

I thought it was clearly established that nobody in the Federation, including the Vulcans, knew that Romulans weren't another species, until the encounter with Kirk's enterprise? There are so many retcons around the first war with the Romulans you get dizzy from the whiplash. I could swear I remembered an early version said it was thought in the days prior to real FTL travel, where it took many years to travel between them and with old school nukes against planets populations, further describing essentially the at the time current cold war, just in space.

So Romulans deserved what Iconians did to them. *Vengeance for the fallen Humans, Andorians and Tellarites.*

I say again, I HATED THOSE BOOKS! Look up the Starfleet Museum (www.starfleet-museum.org/), much better and more consistent.

This should be the next tv show. Wtf was discovery. And even following the Pike story is not entertaining. And don’t get me started on Picard. What a piece of Stactchko.

I’m SO tired of seeing the stupid Golden Gate Bridge on every damn series or movie Hollywood makes! FFS other countries have more impressive bridges that that ugly old thing.

I hated almost everything at ST: Enterprise. It rewrote too much canon and created way too many continuity errors. TOS Balance of Terror clearly stated the Earth-Romulan War was mainly fought with long range nuclear missiles. The only thing ST:E got right was it depiction of the Andorians. For such a key Federation member, no other series or movie depicted a Andorran in a substantial role.
