Hope you've brought some warm clothes because Andoria is a chilly place. Sculpted from the ice of their planet (metaphorically) the Andorians are a cool race of surprising warmth.
This is the Cultural Index a series aimed at exploring various Science-Fiction species.
For outsiders to a series to get to know the basics and maybe even hardened Sci-fi nuts might discover something new.
Thanks for watching!

And the Tellarites are the uncle in law that no one invites but who manages to find out anyways and shows up despite no one wanting him there because he always acts like a boar, ...I mean bore. Of course the Klingons are the hyper patriotic cousin who joined the Marines but still acts like a jarhead because a jarhead is a jarhead; the guy is honorable but gets drunk and does stupid things. The Denobulans are the distant cousin who ran off and joined a commune during the 60s and now has a family that includes a number of erstwhile couples that practice free love and have open relationships; and a passel of kids that no one is quite sure about the parentage. And the Romulans are the family’s politician that is from a really distant part of the family and that no one likes because he’s a Republican with typical Machiavellian tendencies. No one talks about the Risan in the family though.

In "Rise of the Federation", Captain T'Pol actually has an officer who is an Andorian on her USS Endeavour. If "Enterprise" were to be revived-by jennifer.verti@cbs.com and lauri.metrose@cbs.com re-doing the last episode of the 4th season,the series could continue on CBS All Access into the Romulan War and onward. Trip is not dead. He faked his death so he could infiltrate the Romulans. Fans should write Alex and ask that they revive "Enterprise" without any more holo-programmes by "TNG", "DS9", etc. "Enterprise" should stand alone on its own.

Vulcans know the danger of accelerating a cultures technological advancement to quickly. I mean, not long after we made the first atomic bombs, we dropped it onto fellow hoomans. And history has shown as over and over again what happens when a civilisation that is more advance meet a lesser advance one. And barely living to the age of a hundred makes us seem like a bit of a child race. Dying of old age to soon to acquire "real" knowledge. But yes, they were a bit overly arrogant, but what Vulcan isn't? Would a not arrogant Vulcan really be a true Vulcan? :p And the Andorians are great! Real fun and cool race.

@OllamhDrab

@@markuscriticus8278 That version was really just too weird and I thought kinda dumb , given they went with some kind of idea of four biological sexes that somehow didn't produce a population problem in their species' evolution but somehow became unmanageable in a highly advanced Federation. The Enterprise Andorians, though they skirted the four-person-marriage thing entirely, were actually in large part based on the LUG and later game systems' sourcebooks, possibly via some of the same creative talent, and that made a lot more sense. (On the fertility issue, basically there were still just two biological sexes but couples, presumably of whatever orientations, would marry in groups of four so they'd have more cooperation and redundancy in a dangerous world. I think it's just simpler that way, ...in a lot of warrior societies, people have *real* close friendships with people of the same sex, whatever form that takes, ...I tend to extrapolate on that to figure probably Andorians really don't care, at least on that basis, who's romantically-attracted to who, like Human cultures often have historically been. Kinda means everyone's in the same boat, even if they aren't bi. :) They're clannish, likely hunters in their species' history, so just think a bit of a pack mentality, ...and if your genes 'want' to survive, it's good to have three other people that consider any kids of yours the same as their own if you have a bad day trying to bring down the local equivalent of a mastodon or something. :) ) I've always thought it was a pretty dumb sci-fi trope to have writers go out of their way to make it that complicated for a species to have survived in the first place, then use that to 'punish' them over not being like Humans anyway, thus need to be 'saved' and all. (Also maybe the SFX guys and writers went too far out of their way to make Andoria look like a total iceball from orbit, then show only the Northern Wastes for an example of what Andoria's like, ...mono-climate worlds with humanoids on em does strain plausibility to me. :) )

@@williammerkel1410 Who can say...budget? Predictable writing? Taking the easy route? Lots of aliens made sense in DS9, but the lack of 'diversity' in the Enterprise's crew was a bit of a disappointment. They swapped a Vulcan out for a Betazoid, added a Klingon for character 'color', and Data as a walking - talking McGuffin. My guess: budget. TV shows are expensive, and actor prep to look 'alien' adds to that expense. ST Enterprise went "all in" for the alien vibe, and that's why I have a fondness for the series second only to ST:TOS (and the deep disappointment that CBS chopped the series after Season Four).

They are experts at surviving in difficult environments and value teamwork more than probably any other race. Little known Andorian trivia: From the Animated Series novelizations, the antennae were originally supposed to be their ears. That's why they show no ears in TOS and TAS. According to one of the Concordances (IIRC) their primary was Epsilon Indi. If that sounds familiar, the planet Triacus ("And the Children Shall Lead" TOS, Season 3) shares the same sun, and the Andorians were probably one of the races that the evil denizens of that planet preyed upon, until they (and any other intelligent races in the system) turned on them and wiped them out.

In FASA Trek, the Andorians were susceptible to higher temperatures and it made them more aggressive. As an ice age on their planet ended, conflicts between individuals and states increased. They basically prevented a World War by the invention of global climate control of their planet/moon. Also like with Vulcans there were entire ships manned by Andorians only.

I always disliked Andorians. I saw them as a devious type people due to their conduct in the original series. It wasn't until Star Trek: Enterprise and Shran that I changed my mind about them. Shran's code of honour and his bromance with Archer changed my mind. Combs made Andorians "cool".

i would love to see a well written Andorian to play a major part in a Star Trek series as a crew member on a federation ship, sadly, to this day the only well written Andorian we have is Shran from Star Trek: Enterprise, considering their strong military culture, perhaps a similar role as that of Worf. looking back at how much they helped Archer they are easily one of the most important founding races in the Federation. OH! another thing that would be VERY interesting to finally see would be some decidedly NOT humanoid aliens serving in starfleet, give us something truly alien for once!

Was the little girl in 'TATV' blind too? She was beautiful too. I like the way T'Pol gently lead her away. Apparently, having had taken care of a baby, even temporarily, T'Pol has developed a softer side to her. Read that it was actually Shran's wife, Jhamel, that was kidnapped instead.

Well, it's the four biological sexes thing that doesn't make sense, we know they have four-person marriages from canon, but the shows completely disregarded the version from some DS9 novels. That never made any sense anyway. I think they were just trying to make them 'straight' despite being poly, so I found that unimaginitive compared to say, a different culture where two couples of whatever orientation marry in groups of four so that in a dangerous world, there's three people treating the shared kids as their own if something happens to any one. Actually I think it's those *novels* that introduced some contorted and implausible ideas to avoid the possibility that all peoples and all cultures don't necessarily have anything to do with the dominant Human cultures' ideas that the only possible reasons to bond with others or form a family have to do with *needing to to make babies* in the first place, and then somehow presented this as a 'crisis' that could only be solved by making an ...actually older species.... more like those human cultural assumptions. :) That's what I find *lacked imagination.* Basically to *avoid* really fleshing out a different culture. :) Obviously the life forms on Andoria survived their evolution without having a problem it took Julian Bashir and a global personality crisis to solve in the 24th century Earth time.... by becoming like Western human monogamists.... :) (Anyway, the Enterprise series just avoided the issue, but otherwise based the Andorians largely on a game supplement with a different scheme and idea of it all, it's where they got things like the Ushaan from etc, (though Enterprise's version of that seemed ridiculously overcomplicated and with bulky equipment no one would be carrying around, never mind while evacuating a spaceship. :) The Last Unicorn Games version was just a knife-fight, if possible with something like an 'ushaan-tor,' either on a square marked out on clean ice or with white cloth. Not 'Weirdly gigantic gauntlets making it semi-estrappado' :)

In the novels, Andorians have four genders or biological sexes required for procreation (zhen, shen, chan, and than). I find this fascinating, unique, and worth exploring further. I think when Data notes in the tv series that Andorians have 4 way marriages, he might be referring to this biological and social aspect of the species
@micahbush5397

That seems very unlikely from a biological perspective, since it would make successful reproduction much more challenging, enough so that it would likely negate the benefits associated with sexual reproduction (genetic diversity).

I love these cultural glimpses. I hope you continue them. With the Andorians, it would have been cool to have included TAS Commander Thelin. Not sure if there is much cultural or historical insights to gather from that alternative timeline, but it is one of the few original appearances of the Andorians (and the first time we see one in Starfleet). As I write this comment to this now older video, I'm thinking that a series or an episode on non-humans in Starfleet would be insightful (including non-canon, such as the horta crew member in the DC Star Trek comic series).

Sadly ... Star Trek's planets tend to be one-dimensional one-hat tropes just like the races which inhabit them. We saw small portions of the surface on Andoria, on Vulcan, etc ... which explains that these entire planets are arctic or desert biomes with largely uniform surface conditions, lol. Orbiting a star of some type chosen only for size and colour. Don't get me wrong, I love Trek. But this is one aspect of Trek which tends to be very weak and dumb and shallow. The "unrealism" serves story but breaks the deeper immersion.

I really like Shran. Andorians seem to have a sense of honor and loyalty that eludes the klingons entirely. For them "honorable" is everything that gives them the most benefit. If you look at the episode in DS9 where they were waiting, cloaked in the debris field of destroyed cardassian vessels to attack anyone who might try to rescue the survivors Dr. Bashir rightfully said: "Well, that doesn't sound very honorable to me" to which Worf answers: "In war, there is nothing more honorable than victory". Another indication of the rot that has befallen the klingon culture.
