The Hirogen are Star Trek's species of hunters whose entire life seems to revolve around the pursuit of prey.
The ritualistically capture, mark and process their quarry, hang a trophy from its remains and then set about looking for a new mark.
Hunting in packs and in twos, the Hirogen you might be able to talk to a hunter, as long as they're not hunting you.
Plus they cannot cloak so they're nothing like the Predator.
This is the Cultural Index a series aimed at exploring various Science-Fiction species.
For outsiders to a series to get to know the basics and maybe even hardened Sci-fi nuts might discover something new.
Thanks for watching!

In the ST: Destiny book series, The Enterprise ends up in the Delta Quadrant for a short time and they're attacked by the Hirogen. Worf is 1st officer in the series and we find out that ever since the Federation learned about the Hirogen from Voyager, he's always wondered how he'd fare against them, even doing holodeck simulations. He gets his chance when the Enterprise is boarded and they have a badass fight on the bridge. Overall, a good read and this moment was a really fun part.

The Hirogen ships remind me of the airbrushed art of the 70s in those coffee table books by Chris Foss. The Hirogen make damn good long range ships, they are _very low maintenance_ and rugged. If you could get away with it, stealing one would be a good idea, as long as you're leaving the area permanently, and even then it might be an idea to modify it and change it's appearance afterwards in case any other Hirogen (or those pissed off at the Hirogen) cross your path. Hell if the Equinox crew had been hunted and managed to defeat some Hirogen, hijacking their ship and transferring over whatever bits of the Equinox were more advanced would have been a good option. Make a hybrid of both ships, imagine a Hirogen vessel fitted with Starfleet shields and their more versatile subsystems. And hull plating and a few bits and pieces stuck on the outside to hide it's true origins. And did Voyager get detailed specs on them? They had access to a few unguarded ships and the help of a Hirogen technician, the design philosophy and technology of the systems could revolutionize Starfleet ship design when they get back to the Federation. A Federation ship that can go for decades without any servicing and is a tough block of armour. I'm sure the Defiants designers would be very interested in everything about the small hunting ships. As for the Hirogen themselves, how would they fair against a organised war against them? They hunt too many of a particular species or group (or just a few of a paranoid species) and are declared enemies. They are used to hunting prey, but not being the target of a military campaign. And they may well learn that war is the *sport of Empires.*

I imagine the hirogen operate in a clan based society, where clans run space station. At these station clan members can gather to "mate" and to show off their trophies. I mean the whole point of gathering trophies, is to eventually show them off to others.

well the Hirogen don't really have anything to invade, but in terms of glorious battle the klingon's would love the fight. Hirogen wouldn't be friends, as they see all species as prey, but Klingons would see Hirogen as worthy warriors. They look close enough to the Voth that I wouldn't be surprised if they were a splinter species. Perhaps they are a warrior caste of the Voth that left (likely millions of years ago) to do their own thing without interference from the Voth government. However, there were enough wounded Hirogen on Voyager that the Doctor probably would have made the connection to Earth as he did with the Voth. I can't recall if the Doctor ever examined the Hirogen genome at length on the show.

And boy are they a PitA in STO. I do miss the one ground mission where you have to go through like 4 or 5 waves of them in short order before dealing with that pack's Alpha. It was a decent story, as far as early STO missions go.

many early STO missions had the best stories(most notably the Romulan stuff), it is just the missions themselves don't hold up and were not great even for their time.

Strange, I seem to remember reading in one of the Voyager books that the Hirogen bio-engineered themselves in response to having encountered the Borg. The planetless society was also formed for this same reason.

I quite like the Hirogen - and also the final resolution to their cultural choice... finally a decent excuse for the holo... and a good rationale for why they have not become a more dominant species...

The Hirogen kick ass! The "uncivilized enemy" species in Star Trek are usually cooler and more interesting than the friendly species.

The Hirogen to me seemed like a weird mish mash of KLingon, Jem'Hadar, and possibly the Predator (from the Predator movie series)

8:17 Took a moment to realize that "torch" on that diagram was a light and not some sort of flamethrower. I'm aware of the British term for what one might call a flashlight, but I don't often see it used in diagrams. lol.

They already showed up as Tal Shiar-employed mercenaries, and they are a common threat in the Delta Quadrant. (I ran into a convoy of Cooperative-escorted Ocampa in need of resources which the Hirogen were using as ambush sites.)
