Interview of André Nocquet Sensei, 8th Dan, first live-in student of Morihei Ueshiba Sensei, the founder of Aikido. Read the transcript on www.guillaumeerard.com/aikido/...
-- SUMMARY --
0:00 - You just published a new book "Morihei Ueshiba - Presence and Message" for the editions Guy Tredaniel Editeur. Before you started Aikido, you were already interested in other practices, including Judo, how did you get from one to the other?
0:56 - How did you get from Judo to Aikido?
1:30 - Where did you hear about Aikido first, from your readings, or from a demonstration?
1:50 - Did this discipline look like it was the right thing for you?
2:23 - What is Budo?
2:47 - You went to Japan in 1950-55 right?
3:17 - At this time, you were still teaching physical education?
3:27 - You spent three years in Japan right?
3:54 - Were you alone?
4:07 - How was your arrival in Japan, you did not speak Japanese did you?
4:26 - Master Ueshiba did not speak English, how did you communicate with him?
4:35 - This is what you call Ishin-Denshin?
4:49 - How did you understand what he said?
5:12 - When you got to Master Ueshiba's dojo in Tokyo, were you the only foreigner?
5:30 - You lived with his family?
5:51 - How did he behave in intimacy? Was he someone who knows intimacy or was he always the same regardless of the circumstances?
6:03 - Were there other students who stayed with him?
6:43 - The pace was different?
7:36 - You mentioned the Zen in Aikido, can you summarize the personal and spiritual journey of Ueshiba, the founder of Aikido?
8:32 - In Hokkaido, for example?
9:07 - How could he know that it was a master?
10:01 - Today, even though you are yourself a master of Aikido, you do not convey the same education system right?
12:15 - Ueshiba created Aikido in 1922 didn't he?
16:11 - What is the influence of Zen in the foundation and the spirit of Aikido?
16:58 - You talk about spiritual alertness, is the goal of Aikido to reach and refine this vigilance?
18:13 - You were in Japan in the years 1955-1959 and this book is now out in 1988, so this is really the result of a lifetime of study isn't it?
22:28 - How is this teaching of Aikido being transmitted? By disciples?
23:37 - In your book, you also talk of a hidden meaning of training, what do you mean?
24:08 - Is there a selection in the students who enter the dojo?
25:40 - Do you think that the West can access this knowledge with no critical thinking?

Nocquet Sensei interview he talks about some Americans were coming to the dojo. My Sensei was one of those Americans and was the first American to get Shodan from O'Sensei back in 1959. His Name Robert P. Danza. He opened the first Aikido School in the USA mainland in Haddonfield NJ 1961 and taught at Fort Dix in 1960.

Very interesting are his points on a real self defence situation. There he say its not easy to love an attacker with a weapon who is trying to kill you. There for you have atemi. I dont understand Aikido in this point. Why training for love and harmony when you admit that its not realy possible in a realy dangerous situation and you have to use different more violent techniques.
